This shit sucked, you all lied to me
>weird incest subplot that goes nowhere
>boring armyslop runtime padding
>character goes from level 100 social striver to full retard the instant he gets out of the army
>movie spoils "he's gonna die poor, broke and lonely lmao" fourty agonizing minutes before the actual ending
>there is no ending
>narrator just says "lmao we lost track of him I suppose"
100% pure Kubrick-slop
>>
nah you're just a dumbass
>>
>he doesn’t get that it’s a 18th century nature documentary
>>
Just from your speech patterns I'm genuinely surprised someone recommended this to you. It was probably as a prank.
>>
all are those things are why it's good

This movie is fantastic. I was in love with it by the time he gets robbed leaving town. Beautiful cinematography and locations. Shane you didn't get it

The movie is aganizingly slow, but the final duel is literally electrifying OP i was on the edge of my creeky futon in my single bed appartment watching it.
>>
>>221786668
I have always said it was complete shit, but everyone dogpiles me when I say so.
I have absolutely no clue what people see in it.
>Meaningless meandering plot
>Shit writing
>Extremely awful "acting"
Cool vistas and costumes, but what a fucking 2/10 movie

Barry Lyndon is just Kubrick playing god with his actors/toys. He wanted to make a convincing fake biopic movie. The randomness and the loose ends make sense in that way
>>
>>221786976
>All that capeshit in it
Bait list. /tv/ has better taste than this
>>
>>221787063
I'm new to /tv/, so I don't remember this place ever having great taste, but the capeshit certainly seems to check out considering how many capeshit threads I've seen do well on here.

You have to be interested in the time period to enjoy it.

Prove your not a retard by describing Barry's third act predicament and how it relates to a major world event going on one continent away. I'll wait.
>>
>>221787163
The problem is capeshit used to be decent popcorn flicks, so they were accepted on here.
But then, as with any medium that doesn't filter out trash, once capeslop began to be produced at an industrial scale the entire third world descended upon /tv/.

Seriously, anyone who participates in a capeshit thread today has an 85% chance of being brown.
>>
>>221787230
I agree. I haven't even seen anything from marvel since Disney acquired it, and the last DC film I watched was the Robert Pattinson Batman and that one was so bad that I had to interpret it as a comedy to enjoy it.
>>
>>221787314
>so bad that I had to interpret it as a comedy to enjoy it.

Batman/Robin is legitamately better. At least in that one Mr Freeze he freeze, Bane smash and Poison Ivy seduce.

The villains werent themselves in Twilight Batman

I'm still waiting. C'mon, faggots... don't tell me you had no idea what this movie was about?
>>
>>221786976
Adam Sandler truly is our generation's Laurence Olivier.
>>
>>221787368
Yeah, that was a pretty good flick.
>>
>>221786668
My favorite part of the movie is when his faggot stepson "wins" the duel but probably destroys his life anyway because he conducted himself during the duel first with incompetence, then as a coward, and finally with vindictive viciousness.

So even though he was in the right and even though he won, no one who hears about how the duel went down will want to associate with him.
>>
>>221787626
That absolutely didn't happen. He assumes control of the estate and pays Barry to fuck off after he loses his leg. Fairly honorable resolution to Barry sparing his life and a sign that he's matured.
>>
>>221786668
>weird incest subplot that goes nowhere
It was meant to show the main character being a naive romantic in his early adulthood, compared to what he becomes later in the movie. There's nothing weird about it, cousins doing it wasn't uncommon in those days.
>boring armyslop runtime padding
It serves a crucial purpose in character development, it's set during a significant yet rarely covered period in media which is the 7 years war and all around looks cool. If you don't like the army part the movie def isn't for you.
>character goes from level 100 social striver to full retard the instant he gets out of the army
He doesn't. Did you miss the second act? He only becomes hubristic once he gets to the top of the social ladder.
>there is no ending
The story comes full circle, what more do you want?
>>
>>221786668
I fell asleep watching it twice and had to finish it across 3 sessions but I also actively made a point to return to it and finish it over the course of a couple of days, which typically if a movie puts me to sleep I do not do. Overall I really liked it, though I'm a visuals first type of person and it's possibly the best looking movie ever. The scene of Barry when he's drunk and nodding off in his chair in that gambling house is possibly the greatest still image you can take from any film without exaggeration so I think the praise in that respect is well earned.
>>
>>221787475
>>221787211
Isn't it because he funds some British regiment to fight the American revolutionaries when he's trying to cozy up and be named a Lord, and they obviously end up losing and that's part of how he goes into debt or something.
>>
The flaw which prevents Barry Lyndon from becoming a true classic is the source material itself. Barry Lyndon was always a second rate novel which hardly anyone cared about until the movie was made. It's not on the same level as Henry Esmond, which is Thackeray's best work and the book which ought to have been adapted for the big screen.

actual slop people only talk about because it's adjacent to the man shipping a conga line of kino.

It's basically Kubrick's Jackie brown desu
>>
Marrying your cousin wasn’t incest back then
>>
>>221788211
I don't care for any of it. 2001 is a little bit okay, and that Cat in the Hat clip with the Eyes Wide Shut chant made me kek way harder than I should've, but Kubrick can generally tongue my anus.
>>
>>221786668
It's slow and long but it's a masterpiece

its weak bait where he slapped /tv/ catchphrases and buzzwords together

Whatever reputation Redmond had with the nobility was shattered when he tackled Bullingdon in front of everyone. They never saw him as an equal and he made a spectacle of himself like the detectable Irish nobody he was
>>
>>221786668
there was an ending, it just wasn't a happy one. and in spite of him being a total piece of shit, it still manages to make you feel for him in the end. that's why it's a good movie.
>>
Bullingdon was a faggot and was being influenced by that faggot priest who wanted to fuck his mom. Poor mom though. And barry's kid
>>
>>221786668
>character goes from level 100 social striver to full retard the instant he gets out of the army

Jesus, zoomer…

film starts with him murdering an english officer (he believes) to win a woman. has to run away. gets robbed of all his money and his horse very quickly on the road. lies to a prussian general who instantly figures him out, gets forced into brutal service.

gosh did redman know how to play his cards!!!

he was just very lucky to meet the chevalier which is where all his success came from.

Thats not at all what happened. He was a young man rebuilding his families honor and any nobleman would see it that way

How far are you on the list
>>
>>221790089
At the challenge stage, yeah, and his obligation was fulfilled by showing up, negotiations falling through, and accepting the coin toss, he stood tall and on principle.

After flubbing his first shot, begging for a second one against the rules, snivelling and puking, getting a mercy delope by Barry now that his obligations were fulfilled, then demanding another shot so he can shoot him down in cold blood anyways.

He was within his right to do it, but it's still massive
>I'm not giving up my seat for the pregnant woman, I sat down first
ungrateful energy, and aristocrats loathe such types and would be sure to gossip about the perfidy they witnessed

Lmao, I watched Air Force One with my grandpa as a teen, seeing it on that list brings up memories as I never re-watched that one. My grandpa got serious kicks about how unrealistic a fist-fighting POTUS would be. "Get off my plane" was an uproar of laughter in the room. Good times

>>221786668
What're you talking about anon? this movie was hilarious, full of kino, and did you not know it was shot with era-accurate lighting? I couldn't stand the oversized torches & braziers in the Last Duel, but I digress.
When it cuts to Lyndon in the crowd watching his cousin crush jiigging it up with Lord Chadbury I was in tears from laughter

>>
>>221790089
It's absolutely what happened.

>shot out of turn
Incompetence.
>showed fear and cringed when under the gun
Cowardice
>when shown mercy via deloping by a notorious man, responded by shooting him, anyway (as was his right, granted)
Viciousness.

The cowardice alone would be reputation-destroying.
>>

yeah i thought it was a gorgeous movie
but the acting is shit
the scenes are all fucking retarded and boring, with this nasty narrator fucking spoiling EVERY scene in the movie before it even happens
so shit
