its probably the worst film ive watched this year and im not even memeing.

what on earth was nolan thinking? i genuinely think he has lost his mind.

tenet was bad but watchable. this is unwatchable.

Was it worse than Oppenheimer? Because that was one of the worst critically acclaimed films I've ever seen - I mean top 5.

>>
>>221791756
upset? no. wasted 3 hours? yes.
>>
>>221791669
My main thing is that:

1. it looks cheap.
2. it doesn't look like anything. There's no time period of ethnic group or anything represented. They seem like timeless weirdos.
3. The costumes are especially terrible.
4. Every shot seems to be like 5 people standing in a field. I'm seeing a lack of spectacle and "this hasn't been done before".
5. it doubles down on the horrendous "medieval = brown" design which I'm beyond sick of.

Filmed theater btw, is fine, but this isn't going for that. It's going for epic and it looks cheap and stupid.

Exactly. What is this? Who are these people? Nothing is coherent or tied to anything. Everyone talks with different English accents.

hell, I would have been on board with everyone speaking time accurate Greek.

WHAT is up with these wrist bands that they keep inserting into anything related to Antiquity? This could have been a film to thumb its nose at every bad Hollywood cliche about films during this time period, but it doubles down. You get the brown/black leather of Medieval films (Troy is medieval right?), and those stupid wrist bands. There seems to be zero historical research.
>>

For some baffling reason, there is this pop-culture belief that people in this time period walked around with leather or cloth wrist bands despite this not really showing up in any actual depictions from the time period. It just is. And this film doubles down on it.

They are manufacturing a consensus on metacritic and other reviewer sites and reddit is eating it up. I'm curious as to what will happen when they finally enable audience reviews. No doubt it will look like the most obviously rigged score of all time. Like a 98% critic score and a 7% audience score.
>>
>>221795838
lol yes they are. I have a feeling there are going to be tons of nomies that eat this shit up
>>
>>221792471
Because lighting in a studio is an art form but lighting in 3DCG software is just a time-consuming technical nightmare limited more often by what the tech is capable of than any sort of vision.

If you let a lighting expert set the lighting for a scene and then ask the CG guys to match it, the CG will look like shit and will stand out as painfully fake and gay because the lighting doesn't match.
So they do the opposite. Everything is shot with neutral diffused lighting and then CGI lighting is edited into the shots afterwards, so that the 'real' lighting matches the CG.
>>
>>221791809
>it doubles down on the horrendous "medieval = brown" design which I'm beyond sick of.
It's supposed to be antiquity.
>>
>>221791669
Women get less screen time than expected, but they make up for it by making the male warriors hilariously incompetent. 6 longhouses out of 10.
>>
Genuinely baffling why Nolan even thought this was a good idea.
>>
>>221797221
I know that but most likely Hollywood or Nolan is not seeing the difference (despite it being like 2000 years removed). So everyone is wearing brown/black leather. And those mohawk helmets right? Greece had those. Ignore that it's like 700 years removed from those being in style.

I'm not saying it has to look accurate, but god damn I am beyond sick of brown/black leather costumes.

Color was invented in 1940 and before that the world was drab and colorless. It's really just a cliche at this point, AND just seems to be perpetuated by a kind of modern urban chauvanism, where they look down on these petty primatives in the past.
>>
>>221797321
The idea is fine. Hell, you can set the damn story pretty much in any time period and it works because it's pretty open and universal. Hell, set it during freaking WW2 or some shit. There's speculation that the Odessy is a really ancient story that probably pre-dates the supposed Trojan war and it was only later adapted to that setting.

That's why the Illiad and the Oddessy are so god damn differnet.
>>
>>221797365

>all made of bronze,

I know what arm guards, gauntlets and grieves are you fool. But this isn't it. It's everyone in antiquity wearing little leather wrist bands for some reason. I am pretty sure the old 50s Hercules films started this trend, as they gave it to Herc. And it just became "known" that this is how Greco-Roman citizens dressed, ignoring the context.

Part of the problem is that “movie stars” suck dick in general. Back in the day you had “character actors” or British stage actors who would be all over this thing. Nolan wants to be Ridley Scott but Ridley knew how to cast his films. Look at Oliver Reed in Gladiator. If you liked Anne Hathaways monologue about love in Interstellar, there are about 10 moments like that in this film, including from Hathaway herself. Poor Robert Pattinson is left hamming it up in every movie bc Hollywood is giving him nothing to work with in these dull pieces of crap
