Why didn't anyone ever tell me anime could be kino? This scratched my cyberpunk itch probably better than either Blade Runner movie. I've also watched the first two episodes of Stand Alone Complex. Kagobros... can you see him in his steel body? ;____;
don't go down the rabbithole
>>221794235Do you have any other recs? My research suggests that Monster is great.
>>221794294Sure you'd like eva
too bad there are no more anime kinos, nada. don't watch the sequel, it was sobad and boring it soured gits for me.memories is also kino
>>221794314Evangelion? I'll add it to the list. I know the ending is memed but I have no idea what it actually represents. Thanks, anon. >>221794321This looks very intriguing. Thank you.
>>221794294no,don't watch more anime, it's all bad and super kidsyjust memories>>221794314
>>221794294Pupa, Master of Martial Hearts and Keijo. Have fun bro.
>>221794346So GitS is a unicorn in the anime world?>>221794360I'll look into these as well. Thank you!
>>221794379yeah, if you're looking for more gits you will be disappointed. watch matrix instead
The ScarJo version is better and akshually has the plot.
>>221794420The Matrix is kino. I love the entire trilogy and how it riffs with multiple schools of philosophy. I especially admire the take on Hegelian dialectics (e.g., the slave/master tension & sublation between humans and machines).
>>221794379>>221794420but if you want more jap kino watchA colt is my passport(not remake)oldboyandhardboiled
>>221794469am I talking to an AI?
>>221794438I'll probably end up watching it. Surely it can't be THAT bad. At least the visuals should be nice. >>221794472I believe Oldboy is Korean but I do like Japanese films. I need to watch a lot more Ozu and Kurosawa. I also like the guy who did Shoplifters & Monster. Kore-eda, I think?
>>221794507No lol. It's a hot take but Reloaded > Revolutions = Enter imho.
Is this going to be another manime/OVAslop shill thread by the usual suspects? There are worthwhile anime almost every single season.
>>221794572(smuggly) such as?
>>221794572I'm an infrequent /tv/ poster. I'm just pleasantly surprised by how good GitS is. I'd be interested in hearing about your top-ranked anime.
>>221794608Spring had The Ramparts of Ice.Winter had Jigokuraku 2nd Season, You and I Are Polar Opposites, and Fate/strange Fake.Summer is still hard to judge, but The Ghost in the Shell, Goodbye, Lara, Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, and You and I Are Polar Opposites Season 2 are promising.
Black Magic M66; Cyber City Oedo, Dominion Tank Police, Alita OVA, Goku Midnight Eye, Venus Wars
>>221794615Welcome to the Ballroom, Undead Girl Murder Farce, Summer Time Rendering, Blue Box, Ranking of Kings, The Case Study of Vanitas, The Ancient Magus' Bride, and Katanagatari, to name a few.
>>221794743uh yeah, another school romance?
>>221794157If you like GiTS, watch Oshii's other movies. Patlabor 1+2 especially, though they have an OVA and tv series which are not essential but add to the experience if you watch them before the movies.Akira is the most basic recommendation for a reason. It's genuinely great, and you'll definitely like it.The most cyberpunk things after that would probably be the anthologies Neo-Tokyo, Robot Carnival, and Memories, which are very Cyberpunk with a few other genres sprinkled in. Also the Animatrix, which was an animated anthology made for the Matrix movies.
>nobody has mentioned Bubblegum Crisis yet
>>221794922It's well written. Doesn't have the stylistic benefits of Lapin Track's You and I Are Polar Opposites, but I'd recommend it nonetheless. It's one of the more rare romance/slice of life shows that feature a full cast of characters instead of doing harem nonsense. It's not shy of accusing its "heroine" either.
>>221794743>>221794774>>221794886Thank you, anons. I will look into these.
>>221795132>stylistic benefits of Lapin Track's You and I Are Polar OppositesThe opening is particularly nice.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ha_mVguCfFM
>>221794938This is wonderful, thank you. The Animatrix is a must. I've heard nothing but good things about Akira. I'll research the other options as well. What do anons think of Psycho Pass, Ergo Proxy, and Edgerunners?
>>221794438Ghost in the taco bell.
i like the new GITS, even if it just seems like fun and wacky bonus gitsi also think that newfags watching it as their first GITS are in a good position, because SAC will seem even more kino in comparison>>221795069my first animeit's kino
>>221795069This looks interesting. Like a Japanese predecessor to the Powerpuff Girls. Thanks, anon!
>>221795264>Ergo ProxyVery millennial style. Found it snoozy, to be honest. Would recommend Casshern Sins instead. Edgerunners is pretty good. Gets both overhated and overhyped a lot, though. Never tried Psycho Pass.
>>221795181What kind of man watches girly anime like this???
>>221795403What kind of man is insecure about his masculinity like this? It's a fun show; lots of visual comedy and surprisingly astute portrayals of its cast of high school students.
A really entertaining one I never see mentioned here is Rokka no Yuusha.
>>221794438I liked this movie more upon subsequent rewatches. It's not a great remake or technically impressive but I enjoy the character scenes and the set dressing and aesthetic is triumphant.
Also very underrated: Juni Taisen: Zodiac War.

>>221795884Is that not what you would suggest to someone that wants recommendations? I would feel bad suggesting something hit or miss like Ranpou
>>221795992That's what you can find on any top howevermany anime list. And a lot of it isn't even all that good. Why not post something you personally think is great?
>>221796056Adding to this, there is an obvious issue with cultural stagnation, and it's mainly the product of the overwhelming tendency to endlessly circlejerk the "classics" while indiscriminately scoffing at anything created in the last 15 years.
>>221795264Psycho Pass S1 was pretty good, felt like the closest thing to SAC in a long time. Then S2 was so horrific it killed my interest in going further.
>>221794938>KiteVirgin Punk is better.
>>221796311Name one mostly hand drawn anime film from the last 15 years that's actually good.
>>221795716Are you the tvch poster?
>>221794294cyber city oedo
>>221796464I'll die on the hill that Mezzo Forte is his best work by far. Virgin Punk was good, but it felt too much like a pilot for a tv show that's probably never gonna happen to be satisfying.
>>221796611>Mezzo Fortewatched this recentlyamazing action animation and fun, but the characters and story were lackingplus the hentai was very forced
>>221794294Boku no Pico
this is GITS now
>>221794345If you're gonna watch Eva watch the series and End of Evangelion, the rebuilds are optional
>>221794294Patlabor 2 movie was made by gits director before gits. Same kino.
>>221797686Seconding this
>>221797501Always was. The other anime were quite literally fanfiction.
Watch Ergo Proxy and Graveyard of the Firefliesyou will never forget them
>>221797501Yeah the manga was way lighter in tone
>>221797501This is gits then
>>221794469If you love matrix check out Zegapain. Matrix plot but a bit different. Robot fights are awful but story itself is pretty intellectual. For a jap cartoon.
Akira is a non-negotiable absolute must watch for anyone who even thinks they like cyber punkEvangelion is a personal favorite and you'll probably like itSerial Experiments Lain must be started no earlier than 10 p.m. and it must be watched all in one sittingStand Alone Complex will continue scratching the GITS itchThe first few seasons and movies of Digimon deal a lot with technology in a kid-friendly and/or nostalgic way
>>221794345>Evangelion? I'll add it to the list. Imake sure to watch tv series + end of evarebuild movies start well but then devolve into fan trolling

>>221797686I feel so alone seeing Patlabor 2 wanked endlessly. It was good but IMO is the definitive worst of all the Patlabor stuff. After 2 eps Minipato was angling to take its spot but then the final episode was amazing.
>>221794157Are you a zoomer who grew up with nothing but harem, isekai, and moeshit?Yeah anime used to be kino, they don't make them like that anymore though because lonely virgin wish fulfilment sells better.
>>221794345Also try getter robo armageddon and berserk the golden age.
>>221794294Monster sucked, imho.Texhnolyze is great, Serial Experiments Lain is great. Ergo Proxy's alright. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is long as fuck but really good. I love Revolutionary Girl Utena but it's surreal and gay. Mawaru Penguindrum too, and it's slightly less gay. Evangelion is alright, but it is angsty teen stuff. Still holds up if you're in tune with your inner angsty teen, though.
>>221794321This has been on my list forever, I need to watch it.
>>221795403This. Anime is the last good media but 99% of it is garbage. If your series doesnt discuss Kierkegaard at some point I don't want to watch it. Dan Dan is my guilty pleasure, low as I go.

>>221797501The new GITS is just as good as the 1995 movie and GITS:SAC TV show. In a few years you'll be pretending you liked it all along. Just because something uses colors other than gray and brown doesn't make it any less serious.

>>221801333I really only like Mamoru Oshii's comedic stuff. The Red Spectacles and Talking Head are amazing movies and the best proof that Japanese humor translates just fine if it's actually funny. All of his serious stuff is boring and preachy.
>>221795264SPEWKY BEWGIE
>>221794157Beautiful Dreamer, Ghost in the Shell, and Patlabor 2, make a trio of dark haired heroine stories for Oshii. Despite what those stories are officially about, they star dark haired women listfully standing about while beautiful music plays, and feel like the same character.
>>221796611>>221796688Mezzo Forte falls firmly into the category of actual quality slop.Ot has absolutely no redeeming qualities beyond the quality of the visuals.Just like Spriggan.
>>221794294Cowboy bebop. Nothing compares
>>221794157GITS:SAC is really fucking good. People are recommending other specific anime, but I'll recommend some studios to you instead. Kyoto Animation, Shaft, Madhouse, Trigger, Gainax, Bones, Sunrise, and you're already now seeing some Production I.G with GITS. Peruse some of their stuff on a site like MyAnimeList, see what grabs your eye, and maybe read a synopsis or two. Don't necessarily go off of ratings or reviews or popularity. Just check stuff out. Find what you like. There are other good studios, but I suspect you'll find at least a few interesting productions from all the ones I mentioned without too much trouble. Some of them have very unique styles, but they're all well regarded with talented animators and have some really great kino in their catalogues.
>>221794294Monster is just trash. Here are some new and old series I enjoyed:>Cowboy Bebop>Fullmetal Alchemist (2005, NOT Brotherhood)>Planetes>Vinland Saga>Chainsaw Man>One Punch Man (first season only)>Eizouken>Sing Yesterday for me>Welcome to The NHK>Elfen Lied
>>221801382Yeah it just depends. Humor based on stuff like funny situations is easy, something that leans on puns and wordplay might be hard to translate and keep funny.
>>221801079I love fantasy mecha.

>>221800893Purple and green hair (and blue and brown) are just ways for the entirely black-haired population of Japan to better differentiate themselves as cartoons. When you see such colors, you're supposed to assume it's just different shades of black, to help you identify characters more easily when they all pretty much look the same.
