How did he convince the masses he was some genius, visionary director? Was it really just the reception of The Dark Knight?

I've noticed the biggest Nolan fans either
1. Are IMDBcore moviebros and have a very sheltered cinematic palette overall. Never daring to venture far beyond the top 250 list on there.
2. Are Indian
3. Barely watch movies period and just go along with Nolan movies because they are manufactured "event films"

Ok OP I'm going to give you a serious response because I also think Nolan is the biggest fraud in cinematic history but a very smart one.

Nolan has a very clever way of manipulating his audience into thinking his movies are better than they actually are, because Nolan focuses on the core technical aspects of filmmaking and nothing else. He's oiling an engine to be shiny and pristine, but does not give a fuck about the rest of the car enveloping it.
>Major emphasis on music -- use loud orchestral swelling and swooning to give the film an epic tone with genuinely great film scores
>Rapid editing -- always cut quickly to different shots and perspectives especially to invoke intensity, usually paired with powerful music cues
>Practical effects -- give audiences a direct, tactile physical texture instead of murky, abstract CGI
>IMAX -- shoot all your movies on IMAX film instead of digital for that same tactile feeling but also to present the movies on huge, grand screens in loud theaters
>Simplistic but spacious art direction -- use muted colors and realistic, empty settings to invoke a feeling of grand scale while also making them minimalist enough that audiences can situate themselves in them easier (for example Gotham City is not a fantasy world, it's just the familiar Chicago streets now)
>Cerebral dialogue -- have characters speak in intelligent lingo describing the mechanics of the plot instead of their emotions, peppered with quick philosophical musings. This makes the movie seem profound and deep, for example the famous lines in the Dark Knight
>Ensemble casting -- use big-name actors in commanding roles to deliver striking performances usually paired with several other huge actors

When all of this is combined, Nolan gives people the impression that his movies are prestigious works of art but while still delivering mainstream blockbuster thrills. They are crafted with keen sense of escalation, auditory opulence and functionalism that comes at the expense of all the other details a movie is supposed to have. At first glance his movies are very entertaining and convincing, but once you look closer they are a fucking dull mess with outright clumsy filmmaking. But it doesn't matter. That first glance is all that matters, and Nolan knows this. The audience is not going to care about looking deeper into the mechanics of a movie if it thrills them. The Prestige is his best film because it's entirely just him admitting he's nothing more than a trickster magician presenting himself a serious, prestigious artist but is actually a deceiver. That's what he thinks filmmaking is, magic tricks, and that's what he pulls with all his movies. Of course it's fake and fucking dumb when you really look at how it works, but he manages to convince the audience nonetheless.

Heath Ledger dying before the movie came out is what made people think Dark Knight was some amazing 10/10 masterpiece. I remember a friend of mine telling me that Heath taking on the role of the Joker literally drove him insane and that's why he died, etc.

I noticed this too. At the time I was maybe a bit too autistic about the "unconstructed dreamspace" shit making no sense and being pulled out of someone's ass. But there really is something off about the movie.
Then, CIA bigguy4u aside, TDKR is bad. Interstellar is terrible and hides behind hollow emotional crap.
And yeah, haven't watch anything since that.

But the seeds of distrust were planted earlier and could barely make it through the war piece drama he did and the ending in interstellar really pissed the hell out of me
Not sure what all that says about me and my taste in movies
