And the second closeup where he acts surprised is from the same angle as the first one (you can see the same diagonal fallen tree over his left shoulder), I don't know if they're somehow implying that they try to turn around but get reset to the position they were just in by some magical force, or if they were just lazy and couldn't be bothered to set up a reaction shot from the opposite angle.
