I swear, every clip that gets posted it looks like the actors never got above 50% speed on the fight choreography. You got guys just slowly spinning around, guys slowly waving swords back and forth like they're moving through molasses, dudes slowly pointing spears at each other. Did they just completely botch the fight choreography?

Spoilers: No. All it does is give you a bigger canvas on which to see all the flaws. The bad fight choreography and sketchy visual effects aren't just out in front of you now, they're just straight up shoved in your face. It's like when you blow up a family photo that looks super nice and wholesome in a 4x6 glossy, and but when you blow it up to a 24x36 now suddenly you can see that half the people in the photo have their eyes a little too closed or aren't looking at the camera and there's a kid in the background with his finger shoved up his nose digging for gold and the dog's in the background taking a big wet sloppy shit on the lawn and boy your uncle's hands sure are a lot higher up your thigh than you remember and it's bringing back some repressed memories.

That's the experience of watching a Nolan movie on IMAX.

>>
>>221809418
Modern sword choreography is all like this. Directors think it's more convincing to use the actors 100% of the time rather than mix in stunt doubles so it slows everything down, bc the #1 priority is don't injure the talent.
The Northman was another example of this, looked like everyone is fighting in molasses. Saw a clip of one of those star wars shows the other day that did this as well.

Why does every action scene look so amateurish. It's like something out of a low budget film where they couldn't afford much time for choreo so it all feels kind of unrehearsed.

Is this actually worse than Napoleon? I wouldn't have thought Nolan would decline mentally as much as Scott has. It really makes you wonder if he ever actually cared for the art form at all.

Nolan's action scenes have always looked amateurish, but something about the sound design and jarring pace makes it tolerable, especially in theaters.
Everyone judging this movie based on a shitty french cam rip can get fucked. The movie is far from good but it's still entertaining for the most part, with a few actual good scenes, it's literally just a Nolan movie -- entertaining and fun to watch, but something that hurts your brain if you think about it too much because it's retarded and all spectacle.

Or you could just train the fucking actors to do it right. When they did The Matrix back in the 90s, Reeves, Weaving, Fishburne, and the other actors had stunt doubles for the really risky shit like explosions and hard falls, but they also spent like 6-8 months before principal photography doing fight choreography training so they could do a lot of their own fight and stuntwork. In the 70s when they did The Duelists, Keitel and Carradine spent four months training in fencing so they could do most of their own stunts and film the swordfights in lots of long unbroken shots.

Most actors don't put in that kind of time or effort anymore. Half of them just fucking show up, sit on a goddamned stool or stand around on a green screen set waving their hands around and then expect the VFX team to make it work in post - slap their head on a stuntman or a CGI body or somehow make their random punches of the air perfectly counter the strikes of a dozen digital assailants. It's fucking garbage.

the more clips I see from this movie, paired with all the early critics trying to play this off as a "cinematic epic masterpiece", the more I believe it's all an elaborate humiliation ritual. this movie looks actually bad. not even "bad" like it's enjoyable shlock that's obviously not going to win any awards, but it's genuinely poorly conceived, cast, filmed, just legitimately low quality in nearly every respect, and going to be completely forgotten and swept under the rug as an embarrassment in the near future and beyond.

it does make me want to watch the 90s miniseries again though, so silver linings I guess.

I just can't imagine the mindset where someone says "I want to be an actor in an action/adventure movie... but I don't want to do any of the stunts, fights, or cool shit."

they don't realize the take was shit because he's a shit director who isn't paying any goddamned attention to what he's filming or how fucking silly it looks.

the film/digital excuse doesn't cut the mustard; pre-digital directors were managing just fine for over half a century without needing to see every take played back immediately after shooting it. they planned, they prepped, the rehearsed their actors, and the shot a reasonable number of takes for coverage.

It's crazy how quickly the attitude in Hollywood filmmaking has changed in just two decades: Seventeen years ago you had Angelina Jolie literally pleading with her insurer and her director to let her do more practical stuntwork on Salt because she was having so much fun doing wirework and fight choreography and working with the stunt crew. They let her do wire walks on the side of a real skyscraper, throw herself out of a helicopter, jump from the top of a moving semi-trailer to another, and basically 90ish percent of all her own stunts in the movie because she insisted, and that was for a dumb action-thriller with a throwaway plot.

Nowadays they struggle to get modern actors to even put on the fucking damned costumes. They all wanna show up on the fucking green screen stage in their fucking gym clothes and let the poor overworked VFX schmucks "fix it in post", and even the veteran crews and actors who should know better (especially on a movie with a third-of-a-billion-dollar budget) are all fucking phoning it in.

Question but why the hell was this movie even R rated? I feel like even with a few cuts or edits this could easily have been a PG13 movie. Most of the movie and fight scene was still mostly bloodless and i think the one truly gory scene was just the Cyclops eating the one dude, which again could have been easily been offscreen or something.
>>
>>221813107
Why are you asking?
>>
>>221813107
Yes, but its still too high for what its truly worth

I think the thing i love the most from the movie is the very horror esque depiction of the magic and mythical creatures, especially with the grounded world that feels like magic shouldn't even exist in it.
The Cyclops and the witch pig scene with the body horror actually freaked me the fuck out

Bad media deserves to perform badly. People who make bad media deserve to be treated badly. People who support bad media because they have been convinced they are supposed to virtue signal against "the chuds" deserve nothing more than goyslop. If you don't understand that, it's because you are actively trying to not understand it
>>
>>221809915
We're being honest because as like it. Being a fan of something doesn't mean pretending everything is good, it means actually trying to understand the medium and holding it to a higher standard

You're right however I think he made this far more difficult than it needed to be by combining 70mm and location filming. I have to imagine the movie would be slightly less of a shit show if they'd used 35mm or digital.
>>
>>221809752
I genuinely think that, even if the movie is somehow good.
Hollywood blockbuster industry is fucked. Executives with zero taste churn out slop after slop in conveyor belts, with badly-paid technical crew that can't make a movie look good if their lives depend on making the greyest, dullest shit ever, always. Every big release is filled with bad action, bad acting, bad editing, bad cinematography, bad writing, bad art direction and zero creativity.

A big budget flick by Nolan, an acclaimed director who is one of the main responsibles for the current state of bad action movies, not part of a larger franchise, but not an original IP either, is the perfect "scapegoat movie" to bomb at the box office and make Hollywood bleed. Perhaps they will learn the right lessons this time.
But no, unfortunately we can't have nice things and this movie probably will make a lot of money.

It's not the format that's the problem. A director should be able to watch the scene they're filming and say "okay, hold on, those extras in the background are just running around aimlessly" or "hey, you know, this action feels really slow and clunky, let's speed up the choreography a bit"

Buddy Nolan has yet to show he can direct or cut together an action scene in his entire filmography. He can't follow the 180° rule so you have no sense of where anything is or why it's happening. People saw this pathetic nonsense his entire career and continue giving him praise.

I think it's like when you visit old people and they have motion smoothing on, the gamma and contrast all shot to hell, and they can't understand the problem even if you explain it, hell even if you give them an A/B example. That's the average audience.

This is the death of the medium. It's not "experimental", it's not "innovative", "visionary" or whatever other dreck adjective you want to stick on it. It's just another blockbuster movie, except it's badly made AND pretentious about it. It's not a fucking Malick movie mate. Where's the "art"?

>>
>>221814071
The choreography, outside of a few regrettable choices like Obi Wan and Anakin's saber spinning shit, isn't actually that bad. Most of why the fights in the prequels are remembered poorly is how they're constantly interrupted with stupid CGI shit. The big fight at the end of Sith would have been kino if it was just the two leads slowly fighting their way down a corridor, music going, some nice long uninterrupted shots. But instead they had to cut in all the stupid bits of them jumping on lava robots and swinging around on wires like a couple of spider monkeys.
>>
>>221812153
That's actually surprisingly cool looking. Actually has weight to it and doesn't have the kid banging his action figures problem that alot of CGI has. They clearly put budget into to it

Post the full quote

"The more I argued with them, the better I came to know their dialectic. First they counted on the ignorance of their adversary; then, when they saw no other way out, they themselves pretended to be ignorant. If you gave them an answer, they capitalized on your astonishment and gained the upper hand by talking down to you. If you cornered them so data-wise that they had no choice but to agree with you in front of onlookers, they would attempt to slip away to another topic, or offer some self-evident truism that had nothing to do with the debate. If you accepted that truism, they would twist it to apply to the original point of contention. If you called them out on this, they would immediately escape by pretending not to understand you at all."

What you have to understand is that the venn diagram of people who genuinely love and enjoy something and people who talk about something a lot online does not overlap - at all. People who genuinely love cinema and love film, or anything for that matter: anime, sports, fucking cookery, don't spend literally hours and hours a day online complaining or arguing about things on Internet messageboards. They spend that time doing what they love and enjoy instead because, it gives them happiness and satisfaction.

You know what the worst thing is? It happens slowly at first but eventually you realise you have become one of those people. You fell out of love with whatever the thing was that brought you here in the first place and have replaced it with a cheap simulacra of that original feeling you were chasing.
