Anyone else not been to a theatre in over a decade and surprised at the ticket prices? Comes out to $19 for a real IMAX here, I thought they would have been like $30-$40.

Not that I plan on leaving the house, but was still kind of a nice surprise.

IMAX is $28 plus the $2.69 (((convenience fee))) where I live. So nearly $31 for one ticket for a fake IMAX screen. I know they use surge pricing for certain movies though so I'm sure Odyssey is a dollar or two higher than normal. Was $16 a decade ago.

Cinema never recovered from covid in terms of admissions, even boomers stream and my grandma understood she could watch old movies on her web browser (most people don't care about quality). Here (UK) the number of admissions peaked in 2017 and is one third lower than this in 2025. They just bumped the price by one third to recover the nominal revenue, but it's still a decrease in terms of purchasing power, and they know very well they can't bump higher withotu accelerating the decline even further.

>>221810715
Some cameras film directly in 16:9 or whatever, but those used in kinography still used a taller format which allows some wiggle room in framing, the 16:9 window is ajusted in editing.

I wonder how this marketing will affect the film in the long run. True IMAX screen near me is largely sold out (except for the very front row at non-7PM screenings) through to the next week, and then screenings are half sold from there. But every other screen at the same and surrounding locations are struggling to even get 1/10 of the seats filled, even at prime times. Theaters are bound to be pissed that they're dedicating screens to something people aren't coming in for because they'd rather wait to see it in the "true" format, and as nice as selling out the IMAX showings is, even the theaters hosting the format are going to be annoyed at people only really showing up for something they can only do 5 showings of per day.

This. It’s 1.43:1 which is basically 4;3. Nolan uses a vintage handheld Casio EV-4500 pocket TV as his on-set monitor, becuase it basically the same ratio. Instead of using modern 4K monitors or iPads, his crew modifies his analog and IMAX film cameras with antennas to wirelessly broadcast a raw UHF/VHF feed straight to his tiny screen

It's not just the actual aspect ratio. It's the fact that the screen is wider than the widest non-imax 2.39 screen you've ever seen, but then ALSO extends vertically until it fits your whole peripheral vision.
That and the geometry of the room in general. The screen extends to a point far below even the front row (it needs a safety railing), so there's a lot more picture to see in the bottom of your vision than would be possible with a normal screen of any size.
It would be retarded to show this movie in 1.43 on a regular 2.39 multiplex screen. Instead they've produced separate 1.85 and 2.39 DCPs so the cinema can use whichever will fill their screen better, which makes a lot more sense and is better for everyone.
