He's clearly done with Cersei so it's not believable he'd hang around the Red Keep doing nothing but resent her (while also doing nothing to stop her ruining everything), but he's also developed enough that he won't just abandon Tommen or Myrcela for a wheel spinning plot cul de sac for years.It's tricky to make it work from a writing standpoint, but George would be much better positioned than the biblical clusterfuck he's in now. I know numbers aren't his strong suit, but even he should be able to grasp it's easier to troubleshoot ONE important POV character and their plotline than THIRTY FUCKING ONE OF THEM.

As an effect of the plot going out of control and expanding when it should be contracting, he has to come up with more POVs to show the reader what's going on without them being privy to any scheming or battle plans so he can still have dramatic payoffs and twists. The whole reason the Mereenese Knot was such a headache for him is because he needed the sequence of events to go in exactly the right order so the reader can get an idea of what's generally going on in Essos but not enough where any big setpiece moments get spoiled before they happen.It's such a GRRMism to give yourself such a crippling restriction and still periodically cheat your way out of it when you get lazy anyway. We get a look into Ned and Barristan's inner thoughts and yet neither of them have ANY explicit inner monologue about anything pertaining to Rhaegar and Lyanna they personally witnessed which obviously shaped everything about their lives and is directly relevant to what they're doing in the present. That's so fucking crazy George, very cool and convenient!
