Let's not rewrite history here. I admire Troy, I do, but A LOT of people bitched about Meneláos and Ajax getting killed in the beginning and gods not being in the story at all.
>>
>>221811345
Yeah but the idea was that it was a historical retelling, with none of the mystical stuff that was embellished into the story afterwards.

Nah. It sucked just les then what we have now, terrible casting or not aside. It is a fucking generic american war movie in sandals. Achilles who cries and rages in the Iliad is muh stoic hero. Agamemnon is a cartoon villain, Nestor his fucking lackey and Menelaus just dies halfway in. No Diomedes, No Gods. Fucking terrible. I have known since Gladiator that americans are incapable of adapting the ancient world. The american mind just can't comprehend a movie that doesn't end with either generic Hollywood Values or muh republic. The Iron Age (which the Iliad was stems from, though it likely references the Bronze Age Conflicts & Mythy still in memory) is just alien to modern mutts.

I initially doubted Brad Pitt being Achilles but after seeing some of the Choreographed fight scenes where his Achilles was an acrobatic AGI/DEX build rather than a STR build I ended up accepting it. Other than that Troy was solid for its day.

I remember hearing complaints that Diane Kruger in her prime was not good enough looking to be Helen of Troy.. and Diane Kruger at the time was a legit easy 9/10.
Compared to what we get now? We had it so good and we didn't know it.

did you ever think for one second that people didn't just deify actual people and make their feats larger than life?
We literally do that with American Presidents like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln today.
They've literally found the ruins of Troy in Turkey. It was a real place, likely there was a real war to sack it. Achilles could have really been a king who was a participant in it.

The details of WHY the war is fought, and the various exploits within it, and its duration were undoubtedly embellished, and the supernatural components were totally made up to make it all larger than life.
But was their really a Trojan war in which Troy was sacked by Mycenaen Greeks? Possibly. The 7th layer of the ruins of Troy dated around 1200BC (so right time frame) show scorch marks indicating the city was destroyed by an army.

Hell there's evidence that Odin and Thor were real people just elevated to being gods hundreds of years later over time. Many ancient Kings and Emperors did try to get worshiped as gods afterall

Diane Kruger is beautiful but she has slight screen presence, especially early on in her career back then. The point of Helen is that she bowls you over with her outrageous, literally Godly sexuality. It's a standard only a few supermodels could ever reach.

well she was meant to just be some shrinking violet trophy wife so I think she was fine, definitely better than what we get now.

>>
>>221810192
This was objectively shit as well though, the usual Hollywood crap, not even a mention of the gods except to ridicule them when the whole thing was an actual story about said gods and their interference. Paris basically steals Helen with the help of a goddess and her golden apple, he also nicks off with half the Spartan treasury, no mention of any of this. Then to top it off they have armies running at each other like it was the kick off in a rugby league match.

Sure, but counterpoint. Back then we didn’t want our heroes to be having homo gay buttsex. Making Achilles a poonhound elevated this story, and I’m damn well tired of pretending that it didn’t. What, you think it would have been better if he was a foul filthy feculent fetid fucking faggot?

The 70s tv miniseries did it okay with their shit 70s tech. It was kind of gay and campy in that 70s way, but I'd like if they played that stuff straight again instead of with some atheistic take like >what if they're just psychological constructs, or a made up story, or just non-existent in the story??? >O'Toole, who played Priam in the epic film, was so unimpressed by the finished film that he stormed out of a screening after just 15 minutes.
>He revealed: "When it was all over, I watched 15 minutes of the finished movie and then walked out.
>"At least I had one good scene."
Lmao
>>
>>221821952
the thing about no-homo Achilles is that Homer didn't make Patroclus and Achilles lovers in the original poem. That was read into the text hundreds of years later (then dismissed as Christianity took over, and only resurfaced in the last century) by a culture that embraced homosexuality and read gayness into everything (like ours does now, and recently started reading trans into everything).
In the original text they banged female captives..and they were battle brothers, which, is something a lot of civilians won't grasp, you will just see 2 unrelated men willing to die to protect the other and flying into a Berserker rage when the other is killed and think it was romance. But not necessarily. in combat this stranger is your best chance of surviving, so it's a non sexual intimate relationship based in mutual survival in war.
The other aspect of the film is they deliberately try to de-mythologize it. That's why the gods aren't involved, and that's why Achilles isn't actually a demigod, just a really skilled warrior. Achilles gets hit with several arrows, he pulls them out except the one in his heel, before collapsing. So other people see Achilles collapsed on the ground with a single arrow coming out of his heel.. it gets mythologized that that's what killed him.
