Mookie should have spoken up and done the right thing

Every part of this movie reads as pro-racist and anti-black but it's not is it? Spike was sincerely saying the riot was justified, that gus fring and the boombox guy dindu nuffin? That was his message. Incredible.

The "right thing" was smashing Sal's window so that the neighborhood went in and trashed it instead of killing Sal and his sons. They live, Sal collects the insurance money, and the neighborhood loses a business they all loved because they didn't police the behavior of assholes like Buggin Out and Radio Raheem. Its truly a pretty nuanced film. Lee shows that most of the neighborhood gets along with Sal, and he likes them so much he keeps the store open late. He shows that for every denizens of the city with some degree of dignity and responsibility, there's some other prick who isn't doing anything and blaming everyone else for their problems. His own character sucks at his job and is shown blowing it off throughout the day to mess around with his friends or go sleep with the mother of his child that he isn't married to.
