Every aspect of this movie is high quality. I highly recommend seeing this in the theater if you actually enjoy movies.
It's not Nolan's best, but it's another solid addition to his catalogue along with all of the actors. Even that dweeb Tom Holland had a good acting scene.

Everyone talking about the black characters being out of place (in a cast of Hollywood actors with American accents portraying ancient Greeks), no one mentions how bogged af the two female leads are.

There needs to be a stable of like, 20 women banned from getting any work done so someone can play roles that take place before 2005 at least moderately convincingly.

This movie sucks because Nolan doesn't understand Homer and Greek culture on a fundamental level. Homer never hid the cruelty, deceit, arrogance or mistakes of his heroes. In the Homeric epics, the negative aspects coexist in perfect balance with the greatness, bravery and existential quest. While Homer presents Odysseus someone who uses his mind both to survive and to protect his companions, the film isolates the “dark” side of resourcefulness, baptizing it exclusively as cunning and malice. This selective reading ultimately does not highlight the truth of the work, but distorts it, transforming a cosmogonic adventure into a dry psychological study of a man devastated by his remorse.

In the killing of the suitors, Christopher Nolan chooses not to portray the massacre as an act of glorious justice or heroic revenge, but as a dark, violent, and deeply traumatic climax. Nolan visually parallels Odysseus’ return to Ithaca with the siege and fall of Troy. Arriving at the palace disguised as a beggar, Odysseus acts not as a king claiming his right, but as a mentally shattered soldier carrying the horrors of war into his own home. The massacre is filmed in the director’s raw, muscular, and brutalist style, reminiscent of a military thriller rather than an epic battle.

Why, whereas Homer presents the flaws of all sides with objectivity, does the film seem to focus obsessively on presenting the Greeks as the only barbarians and criminals? For Homer, the cleverness and disguise of Odysseus are not insidious cunning, but the only weapon of a mortal against supernatural monsters and gods. The deconstruction of the Greeks and Odysseus in this particular film is not accidental, but is a central axis of Nolan's directorial vision, who approaches the epic through his favorite themes: psychological trauma, existential guilt, and the distortion of truth

Just seen it. This isn’t just a movie, it’s a transcendent experience. I was fighting back tears for the last hour straight. During the climax my whole body was shaking. When it ended the theater exploded into the loudest applause I’ve ever heard, with people openly sobbing. I’ve never seen a film unite an audience like this.
Nolan has reached god-tier filmmaking. The visuals are breathtaking, the emotional depth is crushing, and the ambition is unmatched. This is the kind of cinema they’ll show in film schools for the next 100 years.
I feel like I just witnessed history. Thank you Christopher Nolan.

I have no words.
I just sat through the most overwhelming cinematic experience of my entire life. My hands were shaking the entire third act. I was crying so hard during the ending that I could barely see the screen. When the credits rolled the whole theater stood up clapping and cheering like it was a rock concert. Multiple people had to be comforted by strangers.
Nolan just dropped a masterpiece that will be talked about for generations. The ambition, the craft, the emotional devastation, it’s all perfect. This is what happens when a genius is given a blank check and total creative freedom.
I am emotionally drained in the best possible way. Christopher Nolan is the greatest director alive. This film is a miracle.

The Odyssey is prime example of "Don't judge a book by it's cover". Yes, this is how I am going to start.

The Odyssey is monumental achievement. It is big in it's budget and it feels big on the screen. It's terrifying at the moments but it's also emotional (especially towards the end).

It's rich in dialogue, acting but also in filmmaking.

Maybe it's just me and maybe it's because I love epic films but yes this is worth watching.

How I am going to finish? By giving you a free advice:

Watch the film first, then judge. Forget all the discourse that YouTube grifters tried to feed you and be a cinema lover instead. They don't like films, their prime goal is to make a profit by spreading hate.
>>
>>221827066

AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE!!! Christopher Nolan does it again and delivers an absolute epic that will leave you in awe by the end of the movie. It's a long 3 hours, but this Cinematic experience was worth it. SEE IN IMAX!!!
>>
>>221826654
Even now, many people are still hate-watching this movie, endlessly complaining about the casting, Helen, Athena, and so on. They choose to overlook how well characters like Calypso, Penelope, and especially (in my opinion) Circe are portrayed. They also ignore how Nolan transforms a story that everyone already knows into something more meaningful and inspiring.
This is one of Nolan's best films so far. It's not a perfect movie, but it's absolutely worth watching. If you're looking for a completely faithful adaptation of the original story, then read the source material or watch a stage play instead.
>>
>>221826654
I went in with tempered expectations after seeing the trailer and left completely blown away. Easily Nolan’s best work except maybe for Dunkirk. A masterful modern retelling of an epic tale that does justice to the legend in terms of scope, spectacle and emotion. This is what happens when a team of devoted artists at the top of their respective fields gives their all to a project that was born of pure creative passion. The performances, the score, the sound design, the effects, the editing, the cinematography, every aspect of this movie is of the highest quality and fidelity you will find in the industry. No corner has been cut, no expense spared. It is captivating suspenseful, thrilling and its core it is a deeply touching and heartfelt experience from its beginning to jaw dropping conclusion. Elevated by generational talent with the blood sweat and tears of everyone involved shinning through. Films of this calibre are few and far between.
>>
>>221833433
I don't get why Damon ducks in the first cut. I think that's an error. He ducks for no reason, then stands back up, and runs forward, and ducks down a second time to slide into a spot to row. Maybe Nolan had an original shot where he had Damon duck down and start rowing immediately but realized that broke the 180 rule, so he had to have Damon run and turn around. That's all I can think of. It's still weird he would keep that as the final shot.
>>
>>221833917
If you want it to look good, no, it's much more work, because it requires a ridiculous amount of planning of both the action and the camera. That's why people used to be impressed by long takes. If you have wide coverage you can just do whatever like bravo nolan and switch between shots if a particular shot looks especially bad.

There are only two options.
1. Mindless cynicism that makes you an empty shell of a person with no actual thoughts. Choose this and nothing can ever lead anywhere, you're conditioning helplessness.
2. Post-ironic sincerity where you engage with what's presented sincerely despite a high chance of it leading nowhere. At least some portion of thoughts will lead somewhere and you'll train structured thought.

btw notice the entire catalogue is one guy trying to ragebait people ( who are falling for it since brown and tiktok zoom zoom have low impulse control) to reply to his Odyssey threads, its really just like /v/ when a new journo approved game comes out

This scene isn't some marvel of cinema, it's an average action scene but that still makes it genius compared to that boat scene. Compare the first cut from your timestamp to the first cut in the boat scene. LOTR cuts from the symbolism of danger through a door slowly breaking to the face of the actor to show his fear and stoic reliance on his bow. Nolan cuts from the cheesy capeslop CGI danger to the back of some guy.

Young Achilles, he in sicko mode

Woo, made this here with all the wine on in the ship
At the Troy gate outside, when they pull up, they get me loose
Yeah, Jump Out boys, that's Myrmidons boys, hoppin' out nées
This shit way too big, when we pull up give me the loot
(Gimme the loot)
Was off the Thetis, had a Patroclus
Had to hit my old town to duck the news
Two-four hour lockdown, we made no moves
Now it's 4AM and I'm back up poppin' with the crew
I just landed in Troy, Agamemnon mixes pop like Apollo
Different colored chains, think Hephaestus really sellin' fruits
And they chokin', man, know the Trojans wish it was a noose

Some-some-some, someone said
To win the retreat, we all in too deep
P-p-playin' for keeps, don't play us for weak (someone said)
To win the retreat, we all in too deep
P-p-playin' for keeps, don't play us for weak (yeah)

This shit way too formal, y'all know I don't follow suit
Helen of Troy, most of these girls ain't got a clue
All of these hoes I made off records I produced
I might take all my exes and put 'em all in a group
Hit my φίλος, I need the ambrosia
'Bout to turn this function to Euphrosunē
Told her, "Hop in, you comin' too"
In the Phthia, bitches treat me like I'm Uncle Odysseus
(Don't stop, pop that pussy)
Had to slop the top off, it's just a roof (uh)
She said, "Where we goin'?" I said, "The Troy"
We ain't even make it to klisiai
She thought it was the ocean, it's just the Scamander
Now I got her open, it's just the Goose
Who put this shit together? I'm the glue (someone said)
Zeus OlympusTimed me out the blue

Someone said (playin'-playin' for keeps)
Someone said, motherfuck what someone said
(Don't play us for weak)
Yeah
Greeks
Yeah, yeah
Achilles, fuck these niggas up (ayy, ayy)

The casting makes no sense, Helen and Clytemnestra were half sisters, not twins
>>
>>221826654
This is gonna join the list of 'those' movies. Shameless Oscar bait that the critics and normies cum over and then in six months to a year later they quietly admit wasn't very good or was outright shit; A Passage to India, Out of Africa, Juno, English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, The Last Jedi and anything Rian Johnson's ever done, etc...

Really the big problem is how poorly Nolan's grounded style meshes with a mythological epic; large parts of the story have been cut out, heavily altered or abridged in a very arbitrary way, with some fantastical elements kept but in a lazy way (Circe, Scylla, the Cyclops which makes you wonder why they bothered to include them if they wanted to make a 'real' version of the story.

Emmerich's Godzilla was more respectful to the source material than Nolan's Odyssey. At least there you had the excuse that he didn't like Godzilla and came from a part of the world where the franchise was utterly hated and only did it because TriStar threw money at him until he said yes.
>>
>>221834520
No, those be Laestrygonians. The cyclops is much bigger, naked and deformed-looking.
>>
>>221833433
Nolan's editing for action scenes has always been terrible, in his Batman trilogy the editing for the action scenes got better as they went, I think Batman Begins was the best of the trilogy, but the action is so quickly and poorly edited that it's hard to tell what even happened on a first watch.
>>
>>221838279
they definitely should've styled them differently., what's the point of helen being the most beautiful if his sister looks the same
a lot of people seem confused by them being twins
>>
>>221828652
This is 30 seconds too much.
The only acceptable nigger casting is in gangs movies and nothing else.
I don't want to see them some where else
They're ugly to look at, hard to understand what they're saying and really just sour down anything they're in.

I wish Americans would grow some balls and send them all back to Africa, I had high hopes but looks like the extent was just posting cringe memes by some obese chink who runs the us government Twitter pages

>the chaotic feeling of ancient melee combat
>>221833433
>like you have no idea what's going on, because that's actually how it would feel in real life?
Ancient combat wasn't necessarily "chaotic". The famous Greek phalanx was very highly organized. Now that may have not been in use yet in the era that the Trojan War is supposed to be set in. But Homer anachronistically describes phalanxes which were contemporary to his time in this story. The master tactician Odysseus should have been able to defeat a small pack of giants if his soldiers had spears and worked in proper ranks. That's why the real version of the story has thousands of these Laestrygonians and they chuck boulders at the ships and then spear the men out of the water. A small pack of them like in Nolan's film could have easily been defeated by a proper phalanx.

Also, what the fuck is with the full plate armor? Nolan might as well have given them muskets that shoot cannon balls as well from the same high middle ages period as full plate. That would have been just as anachronistic but closer to the real story of the Laestrygonians throwing boulders.
