What was your initial reaction to Dougie Jones?
>>221827798S3 is a bit off-putting. It initially put me to sleep. It almost feels as if they didn't really want to do it.>SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW PACING under the pretense of "but it's dreamy!">No BGM for like 99% of the show whereas the music was one of the best parts of the original>Huge blueballing with Cooper not actually being Cooper for 90% of the show>Like 60% of a show named Twin Peaks doesn't actually happen in Twin Peaks>"We live inside a dream" cop out>The Doppleganger is cool but sometimes he's cheesy>Dougie Jones is funny but it's a ridiculous premise that Cooper was in a catatonic state all that time>Part 8>All of a sudden he just decides to switch timelines because Leland asked him to in the Black Lodge which leads to multiverse fuckery>Gratuitous profanity and sexual content for no good reason (I know FWWM did have it but not as much as S3)>All of the new characters suck (except for the Wizard of Oz stuff)The only redeeming aspect to it is the music videos, which I actually really enjoyed. Feels nice to get closure but there's a weird feeling that something is missing. I also have HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooOOOOoo permanently burnt into my brain.
>>221827798i liked it
it was like Peter Griffin seething about his twisted knee. it was kind of annoying at first but then it got funnier each time and by the end i was laughing and slapping anytime he came onscreen
>>221827798I don’t remember exactly, I’m sure I enjoyed it, but what I definitely do remember is how him coming out of the socket in a cloud of black smoke and forming next to a pile of vomit was simultaneously the weirdest and coolest thing I had ever seen and probably still is.We’ll never get anything like The Return again, huh. I’m glad it did heavily inspire at least one major work (Alan Wake 2) but while that kind of understood the Lynchian mindfuck aspects and some of the artsy side it didn’t really capture that much of the bizarre-gross parts.
i watched s3 before 1 and 2, it was kino
>>221827798I don't like that he slept with a black prostitute.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lPMs4qsdsTc&ra=m
If you don't laugh at him carefully placing a potato chip on Sonny Jim when he wanders into his room then you have no soul.
>>221828076People say they had watch parties in /tv/ when S3 came out originally and that the "We live inside a dream" scene was a shitshow.
My initial reaction was impatienceOn rewatch one its amusingOn rewatch two you notice the plot developmentOn rewatch 3 you recognize the transcendental motifs such as dougie being an investigator for a conspiracy with case files to investigate leading through eclectic characters and americana iconography to a supernatural resolutionhttps://youtu.be/UdszDlp7GE4
>>221827798I think he is Lynch's self portrait. He realized he's just a tard that loves coffee.
>>221827798I watched all 3 seasons for the first time back-to-back and hated nearly everything about season 3, Dougie included. Had high expectations after season 2, obviously, but the tonal and stylistic whiplash was too strong. Zero cozy vibes.
>>221827798I felt the "what is this shit" feeling initially but then just went with it by the next episode and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also developed a crush on Naomi Watts as a result.
>>221828076Truly prequels before originals, Lynch edition. Even though The Return is a sequel. You get what I mean.
>>221827968>>All of the new characters suckWRONG! The MitchM Brotherts rocked.
>>221827798confusion that gave way to enjoyment
>>221828176I loved the bros so much it's unreal. I was hesitant when I saw Jim Belushi on the credits before the show came out but he did a great job.
>>221828108It has its moments but S3 having great moments doesn't justify that it's quite literally an 18 hour film.>>221828145Agree, it grows on you on rewatches.>>221828155There's this weird synchronicity between Lynch and MacLachlan, I agree that he's his persona or his homunculus. I think that he identifies with him for being a brunet like he was in Idaho (which is mostly White and Blond). Plus he kept writing him into scenes that display his kinks (like all of the pee stuff) or his aspirations (getting with Annie).
>>221828108>didn't laugh or enjoy the White man's kinoprobably has something to do with their heritage
I thought it was funny at first, then stupid, then it was annoying but at a certain point it clicked, realized what they they were doing and it became my favorite part of the third season
>>221828288It pissed off the "where's my coffee and pie and comfy Cooper??" fans which was extremely kino.
>>221828176The Mitchums fall under>The Wizard of Oz stuffThey have the girls in pink, who are pretty much the Lullaby League from Wizard of Oz. There are way too many parallels in Twin Peaks with Wizard of Oz btw.I found a post here with an excellent analysis, that if you think about the "Who is the dreamer?" question the most plausible dreamer is Audrey. I never really thought about it that way, from the Red slippers, down to the fact that Wizard of Oz also happened inside a dream. Audrey suddenly waking up in a shock in part 16 seems to provide a bit of substance to this."There's not a single damn day I don't think about the Wizard of Oz" - David Lynch
>>221828270I'm half-brown and love The Return. Stick to Odyssey outrage threads, you race-obsessed brainrotted faggot.
>>221827798>at the beginningthis is going to suck>at midway through the seasonthis is kino
>>221828353Based
>>221828359The problem is that it takes like 10 hours to get to the point of kino, but it is kino.
I love her, bros. Ever since I saw her, I have been madly in love with her. Also with Julee Cruise; when they played Chromatics I was like "holy shit I can't believe they pulled off a Julee Cruise-level number again".
>>221828313And I don’t even get why, because the Dougie stuff was basically just that. It was Coop stripped of all his smarts, experience, his badass stuff, it was basically just his soul in a retarded body, and he was still just as lovable and charismatic.
>>221828407>mfw finally reading the lyrics to Shadow
>>221828288>>221828313I feel like the green tea latte>"but... I wanted that..."scene is a bit on the nose looking back on it now but during /tpg/ as it aired I could feel the exact same reluctance and acceptance happening to multiple people in real time
>>221828376That’s what makes it good, the build up
>>221828407That band is too annoying for me. The main guy who writes it all, Johnny Jewel, is such a pretentious retard.
>call for help
>>221828438I think this is the most twin peaksy scene in season 3. Some guy is pissed off about getting the wrong drink but he actually loves it
>>221828223>It has its moments but S3 having great moments doesn't justify that it's quite literally an 18 hour film.>18 hour filmIt has a lot more to show than what they can fit into a movie. Such a lame argument.
On the 3rd watch through I finally said aloud "ohhhh Gene Kelly, the singing in the rain guy. Oh shit, that makes sense now. Fuck."
>>221828477The reason why Twin Peaks S1/S2 work so well it's because it's edited and shot like a Soap Opera (while actually parodying Soap Operas). Twin Peaks S3 is shot and edited like a show you binge watch on Netflix because it happened in and for the digital era.
>>221828469He's such a cutie patootie.
Only a Twin Peaks thread could get over 35 posts in under an hour on a dying board on a dying website. (Only 3 posts were mine)
>>221828519I figured S3 itself was also somewhat of a parody of current TV shows, since a lot of shows were trying to do moody and incomprehensible shit for the time (and still are honestly).
>>221828160Did you skip Fire Walk With Me? It makes a good transition to season 3 because it has a similar tone.
>>221828577NTA but I find that one to be a hard watch. I hear there are good edits of it around but I don't know which one is the best one. Lynch himself was also somewhat unhappy from what I recall as the movie ended up being edited badly for runtime reasons.
>>221828605Cooper has a serious case of Bad Hair Day in FWWM.
>>221828519>because it's edited and shot like a Soap OperaFire Walk With Me isn't like that. Did you dislike that?
Is episode 8 the most standout episode of them all?>The nuke test episode
>>221827798Add bottom text “covfefe” to that image and you have 2017 in a nutshell.
>>221828629No, it motherfuckin rules.>Gobble gobble
Has anyone else read the original Episode 29/finale script before David Lynch got involved and rewrote the whole thing? It's really, really, really fucking bad.http://www.lynchnet.com/tp/tp29.html
>>221828645Nah there are better episodes. It’s the most batshit insane one maybe with the fucking nuke animation for like ten minutes though
>>221828645Yes, but I personally think Episode 3 was the actual most experimental one, followed by the final episode, narratively. Episode 8 is cool and cosmic and yes widely considered the most standout but not my favorite.
Also I just wanted to say that my nigga James was the only morally irreprehensible character in the whole show.
>>221828692james was always cool tho
>>221828681That's what I meant. It's not the best nor my favorite episode, it just deviates further and more wildly than any of the others.
>>221827798Hated it. Didn't like S3 until the end.
>>221828605I think I went with the version that has all the cut stuff restored. It doesn't really have the soap opera tone of the first 2 seasons, and mostly focuses of the demonic supernatural things going on around Laura.
>>221828469ONE ONE NIIIIIIIIIINEIT'S YREV GOOD TO SEE YOU AGAIN OLD FRIEND
>>221828747That's 'cause you are the FBI
>>221828761Yeah the tone was fine with me, I just remembered the editing not being great and feeling like the movie was incomplete. I've only ever seen the original release but I've heard there were new edits that had the hours of restored footage. It's a shame Lynch himself never made a new edit of it, all the footage was around since there was an entire disc of HD footage included with the box set.
>>221828469how did him and Lynch get blessed with a full head of silver hair
>Gassin' up the jet. Let's go. Meeting Dougie in the lobby.
>>221828806Good diets. Both are pretty autistic about what they eat and deficiency in certain vitamins can cause hair loss. Genes are a factor too, but you also need to eat good food.
>>221828825>We're gassin' up the Jet! We're gassing up the Jet right now, Dougie!
>>221828739Oh okay
>>221828806God protects men full of Whimsy and Goodness.
>>221828773I think it's because I watched through everything in preparation for it.
>>221828806>>221828843QUINOA
I thought it was pretty stupid in a bad way and not entertaining and the whole season barely felt like Twin Peaks but it's still quite interesting project with some good parts. Also the girl here looks really sexy and I want to rape her in the ass.
>>221827798At first I was hoping for Coop to come back in each new ep. Then I was sad when Dougie left.
>>221828577Lmao what. It doesn't have a similar tone at all.>>221828605Just watch the tonally consistent original cut and if you feel like it's missing irrelevant comedy shit then watch the cut scenes after that.
>>221829300I heard some redditor remark that she's a churchy christian airhead IRL, as though the alternative to that is really any better.
ANON! HOW MANY TIMES DID I TOLD, YOUUU
>>221829438>missing irrelevant comedy shitwhat are you talking about? the missing pieces has the very important 2nd floor gas station scene. the whole series doesn't even make sense without it. after that, you have the david bowie scenes which are almost important. the irrelevant comedy bits (the old man at the lumber mill and the long fight with hillbilly) weren't that bad either. let's see what else...oh, laura being spoken to by BOB and Judy is important and even referenced in the series finale
Who's Chip?
btw, if lynch had lived long enough and had the inclination, I could see S3 Audrey joining Coop and Laura in judy's world, I'm presuming that's where she was the dreamer
>>221829613That's Barney's brother
Honestly just went through it to get through it.Might need to do a remarathon.
>>221827798most wholesome and kino thing I ever seen
I did not like the first few episodes of S3, so it took me a while to get through it, but I was enjoying it by the time I got to the second half.
>>221827968I mostly agree with you. Especially the pacing is horrendous sometimes, while the nuke sequence is cool at first I almost fell asleep because it keeps going on and on and on...I don't think I enjoyed a single music video, I just skipped to the end to see if there was an actual scene still left.
Battling evil takes it's tole, just glad Douggy pulled through
Realization + acceptance. I am Doug E. Jones.
>>221827798I crode and lamented the loss of CooperAnd realized at the last fucking episode that the storywriting was so shit that they had to mentally handicap coop to even prolong its miserable slog of an existence till whatever the number of episodes Return wasEvery scene with him was completely miserable and boringThe whole reboot was completely unnecessary and didn't build upon anythingIt tied up the all the plotpoints and just finished it in a hurried manner with no care to the previous loreThat gas pump dude literally became a walking corpse and only then did he go to live with his true love, the diner corpseLmao wtf Also ot was quite sad to see my favorite characters all old and miserable, and all I could feel watching it was the inevitable march of time and how it gives us strength beauty and youth and then rakes it all away, leaving us with only regrets and what ifs
>>221828469IT'SHAPPENINGAGAIN
>>221832353Another Lynching victim.
>>221827798I didn't love it but I vibed with it
>>221828160I don't want to be so harsh as to say Lynch wanted to punish people like you but I don't know how else to put it. Return is kind of like what Michael Keaton was doing in Birdman or some sitcom actor who resents people yelling their catchphrase at them in the street
>>221832419Sometimes he is too autistic for his own good
>>221832588A MOVING PAINTING
>>221832353>The whole reboot was completely unnecessary and didn't build upon anythingOf course it didn't. Lynch already did everything he could with Twin Peaks with the original series and FWWM. The Return is simply his revenge on the audience for killing the original project. It's Lynch re-animating a corpse for the entertainment of the bunch of retards who, at the time of the original show, missed the point so much that all they could focus on was "who's the killer?" as if TP was just any other shitty throwaway TV show. And they put so much pressure on the showrunners that they actually managed to kill the show. It's a revenge against the goyslop series/TV consumers in general. The same goyslop consumers wanted the series back, and Lynch basically said "you know what? I'm going to make an entire show to say "fuck you" to these retards and grab this chance to make all of my friends work again".The series starts with Judy decapitating a couple making out on a couch in front of an empty box with cameras pointed at it. I could honestly not think of a clearer "fuck you" to the Netflix and chill generation. And the series ends with the original storyline being deleted by Cooper (who is the audience's stand-in) trying to save Laura Palmer, whose death was the premise of the entire Twin Peaks concept. Cooper (again, the audience) is left to live in this world without Twin Peaks which he literally created with his own hands.
>>221832767Like I said, I crode
>>221832767>The series starts with Judy decapitating a couple making out on a couch in front of an empty box with cameras pointed at it.Thank you so much for pointing this out, surprised how many people never bring up this big obvious metaphor that's in the fucking first episode.
I think Lynch fans loved The Return while the Twin Peaks only fans disliked it because it wasn't the fan service return they dreamed of.
