This is also true, it downplays the Gods and it even is a major theme in the movie. I get what Nolan was going for, but I do wish there were scenes in Mount Olympus and more godly shenanigans. There are plenty of fantastical aspects to it, it doesn't shy away from a lot of what was presented in the original story. The Siren scene, for example, was really good, and wasn't downplayed at all. Of course, Odysseus doesn't return home covered in a mantle with nothing underneath, but the movie doesn't need that to work and do what it set out to do. But I do agree with you to some extent.

To add onto this and justify what I liked a lot about the movie:
-Matt Damon, Holland and Anne are all great. Even burn local is pretty good in this. Agamemnon is underwhelming which is a great disservice.
-The boat scenes occupy a significant amount of time and are all great. Sound design is all around great but in these scenes it's stellar. Wood creaking and breaking muting the sounds of the sailors struggling under the thunder and waves. It actually made me uncomfortable imagining being in that situation while also believing I was cursed by a God. Those scenes were all great.
-Cyclops, Cerce and the sirens were stand-outs. Cerce particularly was one of the best bits of body horror I've seen in a while, which I wasn't expecting from Nolan.
-Action scenes range from good to mesmerizing, last one being a standout.
-The movie looks great and this is where Nolan really adds something valuable to the Odyssey. There is not one scene where the backgrounds feel lazy or phoned in. There is a lot of money that went into this and you can tell. I don't think many living directors could do what Nolan did here. Even if I don't care for a lot of his stuff, credit where credit is due, he brought his A game to this one.
-It feels like an epic, even borrowing the non-linear structure from Homer's original and expanding it in it's own way. It's easy to follow and helps the themes affirm themselves.
-It was never, in it's three hours of runtime, bored or not engaged.

It's a really good movie, with rightfully pointed out flaws. Just don't mistake the forest for the trees like a lot of anons seem to be doing.

The casting choices were really annoying.

Elliot Page was cast to represent a young boy being sacrificed by the cunning Odysseus. But she should have been at least 18 by the end of the 10 year Trojan War, and probably in her 20s, so the casting made no sense.

Tom Holland was cast as Odysseu's feeble son Telemachus. However, after Odysseus' 20 year wanderings, Telemachus should be at least 20 by the time of the killing of the suitors.

He and Odysseus fight side by side in the book and there is no indication that he is some weakling or something. Which is why Holland casting is bad, because it's as if they wanted to suggest he is a 14 year old boy too young to fight.

Circe was an especially egregious cast. In the book she is described as lovely and ends up having segs with Odysseus, producing Telegonus, an important hero of later epics, and the men stay with her for a year. This would be impossible in the movie where a creepy fat old woman was used as Circe.

Odysseus himself was terrible. Matt Damon looked old and fat throughout. Matt Damon is a good action actor, but not a charismatic man, and Odysseus is a character better known for his wits than anything else. And in this case he is just too old. Matt Damon is old, out of shape, and uncharismatic.

The original book's killing of the suitors (above) makes the slaughter plausible by Odysseus and his three companions using trickery. But in the movie the old man just plops down in the middle of the and 1v108s them while they literally run in circles in the background waiting their turn to approach him 1v1. The fact that Odysseus is played by a rusty fat old duddy guy makes this approach Bollywood levels of unbelievability. It is supposed to be 4 men in armor slaughtering 108 defenseless drunken idiots by trickery.

Loved the scene where PTSD and drunk Bernthal Menelaus explains the harsh reality inside the horse to Telemachus

Also Troy is a straightforward movie that tells the story linearly. Odyssey is jumping from her to there, while having a frame story that is also in different locations (Ithaca vs Calypso's island). The characters in Troy are likewise typical characters, while in Odyssey, characters like Agamemnon seem like removed larger than life figures that don't even talk. It's more stylized.

Biggest problem for me is the editing. Nolan's pacing is terrible up until the last third of the film. There's so many choppy acting sequences and rapid cuts. You never get a sense that much time has elapsed. Nolan portrays the men as spending several nights in the Cyclops den, and yet it passes by in a flash. It's also chock full of that typical montage rapid exposition 'serious things are happening' shit he's been addicted to since the Dark Knight, especially at the beginning.
Nolan's undying commitment to making 'cerebral' films also resulted in the most sexless interpretation of women ever in a classic tale. Circe is lamentable. Just outright modern feminist misandry and zero enchantment or bewitchment.
Acting is overall competent, but every role would have been better served by theatrical small-timers and/or 'character actors'. Nolan's gotta sell the film, but Damon and ilk are all horrible miscast. Nolan's directorial quirks probably limited the degree to which any actor could do anything special regardless.
Elliot Page as Sinon is absolutely a sanctimonious stunt to pull Oscar nods.
Nolan seems to also have deliberately made an effort to remove any trace of Grecian or Mediterranean identity from the film. Not just in the cast, but the scenery and atmosphere too. You get the mildest hints of it at Ithica and Troy, and when they pass the sirens and encounter the Scylla - that's the closest Nolan could withstand letting his big grim commentary on the psychology of war come to a classic Swords and Sandals style adventure.
Odysseus is thusly a man bereft of any wiles or cunning. Nolan doesn't want this man to pull of daring feats of heroism. He wants Odysseus to stew in guilt and sacrifice. In fact, one of his most famous exploits, the cyclops encounter, is solely used to chastise Odysseus for losing his temper.
In spite of every negative - the overall production is enormous. It's a film that's far more than the sum of its parts, somehow.

I think Nolan and Villeneuve have perfected the art of the middlebrow film, that enchants modern critics while also resulting in a modern box office smash success. I can't help but feel like their recent outings are OK I guess, but quite a bit overrated. I want to like the movie, but with everyone, in my view, overrating it massively, I can't help but root against it.

If anything, I think Elon and his side helped the movie's reception. I think critics were afraid of looking like they sided with them, which prevented people from pumping the brakes on the insane Nolan hype train everyone seems to be on. The audience doesn't give a shit about the culture war stuff enough to pass up a Nolan film. I think the right wing grifters will go back to wrestling corpses after this blunder. The most important part of the story, book 6, which serves as the framework for what happened to odysseus for the last 10 years is not in the movie. king alcinous, nausicaa, demodecus, none are in the film. without them the film is just a series of flashbacks with no narrative structure. the whole character of odysseus is revealed in his time with the phaecians. odysseus, not having revealed his identity to alcinous, starts to cry when demodecus recounts the story of the trojan war. when demodecus tells the story of the fight between achilles and odysseus, and odysseus breaks down weeping to finally reveal his identity and give his own account of his misfortunes, is all missing from the film. the lynchpin of the whole story, the episode with the phaecians, is not in the movie. matt damon is the worst possible actor to play odysseus. the other casting choices I could ignore but the charisma vacuum of damon, and the way his character was written makes you not give a shit what happens to him or his men.

I have heavily mixed feelings about the film.
I hated every aspect of it: The editing and cinematography were god awful to the point of being nauseating. The costumes were B-movie tier shit. Terrible pacing. The scene blocking was pedestrian. The casting was terrible. The script was about as bad as it could be for basing a script off a literal masterpiece. I didn't like the soundtrack at all. Every individual bit of it was genuinely "worst movie I have ever seen' tier shit.

Problem is, I find myself saying it's better than the sum of its parts. Even though every part is fucking awful, I kind of liked the film as a whole. The dorky paper mache costumes fit the vibe. All the cast members did an acceptable, even great sometimes, job, even if they were in the wrong roles. I don't know how to feel about it. It's a technical fucking mess, miserable from every filmmaking standpoint, but I found myself enjoying it.

6 or 7/10 maybe? I feel like it will get worse on rewatches. Never seen film be uniquely terrible in every possible way but still be an alright watch. I liked it though, all things considered. Weird movie.

It might not be Nolan’s best film but I think it’s my favorite. Never seen Matt Damon perform like this and he hit it out of the park. I feel like he’s really raw and authentic. I’m surprised that Lupita Nyongo actually works fine here. It’s established immediately that authentic casting and dialect is throw out the window here, so it’s not just her. Elliot Page is awful. Tom Holland is too old for how his role is written, and he can’t act. He’s doing Peter Parker here. Zendaya works being that she is Athena taking the form of one of the slain citizens of Troy. The Cyclops stuff was all awesome, ending battle got close to being too comic book-y and were being honest it probably did. But anyway I loved it.

The Cyclops' design is Nolan showing children of the gods as truly deformed monsters. It doesn't have the stereotypical cyclopean eye which looks like an eye naturally occurring in the middle of the face, rather its face is a man's face, but crooked sideways like a flounder's, twisting its mouth and bringing its nose almost sideways, and the sole eye is essentially vertical. The other eyesocket has migrated downwards, athropied and merged with the jaw, nothing probably ever grew in that.

This deformity represents the unnatural hybridization between gods and whatever Poseidon dicked and is a shoutout to the Nephilim myth.

I think those two points are connected and intentional. The Odessey is a dense, and for casual film goers, kind of intimidating story. Liked it, casting controversies were right besides maybe Zendaya.
Holland was shit. Lupita felt out of place. Page's voice is fucking grating.

The woman they killed was a priestess of Athena, which was also a 'rewrite' of what happened in the stories.

Still, Euripides wrote an account of the Greek atrocities in Troy, called 'The Trojan Woman'.

So really this film isn't 'The Odyssey', it's just a mishmash of a bunch of themes from different writers. No rhyme or reason for any of it.

I never read the books. I saw Troy with Brad Pitt and that's a great movie. This movie was like they tried to squeeze ten pounds of shit into a five pound bag. I felt like I was being pranked and shown a fake movie for some skit.

This was my first time at a proper IMAX (70mm, 1.43, GT). it's a very impactful experience to the point where it's hard for me to be objective about the film and judge it separately from the shock and awe of that format. It's definitely at least an 8/10, felt more like a 10/10 due to being 3 hours of pin sharp celluloid filling my peripheral vision.
For anyone who's never been, it's worth making a serious attempt to watch it in a real imax, even if you have to travel a few hours like I did. Or fit it into some other trip you're making anyway.

imax excels at slow moving long shots of vast landscapes or nature scenes, where your eye can freely explore the whole giant frame and your vision is carefully directed from shot to shot
after seeing the editing in these odyssey webms, it is galling that they market it as being truly meant for imax

I saw the trailers; I don't know why I gave this the time of day. Matt Damon cannot play a character from before the 20th century, hell everyone in this is pretty awful besides Leguizamo (i guess Anne Hathaway still makes my pp hard) not to mention the awful costumes and Jason Borne tier shaky cams and claustrophobic shots.
