I just watched this, what did I think about it?
>>221832913another reddit moviemade by asianamerican millennial women
>>221832913>what did I think about it?Everything
Without using the word "reddit" or "cringe" or "millennial" explain why this movie is actually bad.
>>221832913Always bet on Nolan.
>>221833079I don’t think it’s bad, but the principle conflict of the film — Chinese mother struggling to accept that her daughter is gay — is a dead horse that has already been beaten an eye rolling amount of times at this point, and almost ruins what is an otherwise fun idea. The film does just enough other stuff well though for me to tolerate the cliche.
>>221832913You liked it. Btw, you're trans
>>221833079it insists upon itself.
I think there's about 5 movies I haven't finished to the end. This is one of them.
>>221833079I think it's because it's melodramatic
>>221833557y-you too, thanks.
>>221833719no its the retarded buttplug gag
>>221833761I could live with that, in fact I've basically forgotten it.
It was weird and entertaining.
>>221832913You thought that it was good but found Swiss Army Man to be more memorable
>>221832913Too long
>>221832913chang gilf sex now
>What if did The One starring Jet Li and make it Mo lei tau style but extremely lame and gayErsatz version of actually kino chinese comedies
>>221833079It’s wokeslop done well. There’s plenty of creativity and relatable family drama but it can’t help but go down the well of tired modern liberal struggle tropes played completely straight that make it feel like a morality play more often than not. Gay daughter not accepted by traditional family? Check. Model minority nonwhites looked down upon by conservative white community? Check. Basic philosophical concepts being presented as deep wisdom because ‘Asian’? Check. Safe horny humor that tonally whiplashes and undermines serious moments in several scenes? Check. That said, one of the main conflicts concerning the main character, which seems initially to stem from being held down by traditional patriarchal family values and systemic oppression, turns out at the end to be the result of her personal choices and their consequences, which is rare to see in a modern work, particularly regarding a female characters, who are more often than not simply victims held down by an irrepressible societal oppression.
why do Asian bitches hate their parents so much?it's literally all they write about
>>221834259>forced to either study 160 hours a week or work the rice fieldsquite the mystery
>>221834259Striver culture that forces their kids into a very narrow path of success, the asian parents meme isn't a meme for nothing.
>>221833079It's cringe, Reddit and millenial
>>221832913But being gay is very dishonorable. How
>>221833394The film needed a happy ending - like the daughter renouncing her shameful lust for the same sex and then she marries a doctor and gets pregnant.
>>221833590Can people stop saying this phrase, it means nothing.
>>221833590It's Mo lei tau, it literally does the exact opposite of that
>>221833079I hate Asian-Americans
>>221834259>grow up in the west, where values are laissez-faire and young women are encouraged to pursue their dreams>dad considers you less than human, equal to a dog>mom lives as less than human to appease dad, but also considers you an outlet for all of her own unfulfilled dreams>both are extremely insecure about their race and culture and would love nothing more than for you to never taste western food, never interact with westerners and only learn their language well enough to file the household's taxes. It gets very bad if you grow up in one of the big chinese cultural enclaves line in California, where you can live basically your entire life in a transplanted chinese community with chinese doctors, chinese gynocologists, chinese insurance brokers and chinese car salesmen who are all on wechat together with your family, your neighbors and your school teachers. I've heard horror stories of women in their 30s afraid to go to their gynecologist because they know the doctor will report the status of their hymen to their dad.
>>221832913Generally enjoyable, funny and creative. The ending dragged massively and devolved into slow mo montages of emotional moments with sad piano music. 7/10, if you like quirky random humor I would recommend it
