Nolan was always a hack that gets deepthroated by critics and general audiences for whatever reason. He somehow convinced people to view his capeshit bamham films as cinematic masterpieces because his films lull the audience into not really paying attention. >>
>>221838367
I'm an archery expert. You're supposed to pull the string so far back that the bow bends and both ends of the bow bend back and touch each other. That way the arrow has the most force.
>>
>>221838234
Yeah, I I don't think it needsto be drawn that far to kill these guys at what appears to be maybe 10 meters.
>>
>>221838277
You clearly don't know how a fucking bow and arrow works.

It's easy to tell in every shot that A. it's as loose as your mother and B. He's not even attempting to pull the drawstring back

It may be common in those super cool archery videos to 'hipfire' but those are with compound bows, not a single string. Single strings take time and a shitton of effort to pull back and aim.

>>221838198
a light bow can shoot a light shot
but odysseus's bow was infamously impossible to string by anyone in the room, implying it was both a massive bow and had an exceptional draw weight
not only that a large bow shoots a large shot, with the recoil to match.
If the point of a bow that cant be strung is that no one is strong enough or wide armed enough to get that damn bow strung (see, the return), its goofy as shit that nobody in the room full of hunks and chads could muster the strength to string that toy fuckin bow
Lastly, your draw influences the power of the shot, and a half assed [whatever the fuck draw] hes doing isnt putting any more power than is needed to send the arrow forward, but not through people

I genuinely wouldnt be surprised if thats because stupid fucking nolan actually wanted damon to shoot actual projectiles at people, but since its actual projectiles damon was instructed to hold his bow funny and shoot the equivalent of a BB gun at people
>>
>>221838348
Not "aiming" the bow isn't the problem. Most trad archers shoot instinctively, that is you just look at your target and shoot. Like throwing a baseball, you dont aim it really. The problem here is that he's half drawing, and pulling it with his elbows. That's simply not going to produce a powerful shot, and his bow is supposed to be unbelievably powerful. In the end it isnt even about realism, the root of the corny-ness is that it doesnt convey power at all. It looks like he is shooting a toy bow. Compare this to almost any other archery scene in the last 30+ years of modern film history

This is a movie
This is a notoriously big movie
This is a notoriously big movie with a director that explicitly DID NOT want to make realistic armors, realistic cast, realistic nothing
Why would you be so fucking dense as to point out "it's realistic so it works!"
Everyone expected that scene, that scene to be non-realistic, just that scene
Everyone expected him to grab a fuckhuge bow, do a massive stance, pull the bow with a huge rope sound, release the bow with a fucking gong sound, and shoot a massive wooden pillar and impale 3 guys with it. That's what everyone expected of that scene, and realism on the rest of the movie. It's so easy.
But you the cucky sheep get a realistic small bow pew pew in that scene, and non-realism on everything else
This is why you are a faggy blind sheep, Nolan did the complete opposite and you gobble it up

>Nolan’s use of scale (the overmarketed IMAX viewing platform) perverts classical cinema as well as the literary classics. Nolan’s insensate followers — the Nolanoids — don’t appreciate great composition; their sense of aesthetics has been dulled. In their fascination with new technology, they forget what was achieved by David Lean’s enlarged aspect ratio in The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, and Doctor Zhivago — the singular perfectionist visual craft as in Lean’s earlier small-scale movies.

Makes sense, that's just one of the reasons some of Nolan's scenes look so bad. He just doesn't care, as long as it's "good" enough to convince peasants and the right movie critics, then it doesn't need to be any better. I'm actually fucking furious that, just as I predicted, Nolan indulged the fuck into the Argos scene because "oh my hecking precious pupperino too pure for this world oh he just needs to be acknowledged he can't be ignored like in the original it's just too cruel, oh it's just too much."

In fact this entire movie just reeks of post-hoc revisionism of the original story's pathos and ethos, informed by pop-culture understandings of Greek Myth. Transforming Oddyseus, a crafty but reserved warrior who boasted about his kills and his raiding, into some fucking crypto-Christian who feels deep shame and guilt over participating in the sacking of Troy. It's just so fucking gutless, there's no point to it, there's no heart.

I know this post is likely bait, but just for the hell of it, the posts you're responding to have nothing to do with politics. They mention the filmic elements, and point out that they're shit, with many, many explanations of why throughout these threads. I can't imagine empathizing with characters in Nolan films. They feel like they were written by an alien. Like when McConahuehue is crying in Interstellar, it didn't connect at all, although he's a decent actor when the role is well-written and directed, which obviously Nolan has problems doing. I guess it's just interesting that some "people" can "connect" with Nolanslop-writing.

Nolan lives off that media hype train and laughs his way to the bank when people realize the emperor has no clothes

Reminder that custom IMAX cameras were designed and built specifically to waste several million feet of film on this slop.
>After using IMAX 70 mm film extensively since The Dark Knight (2008), The Odyssey became the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, primarily using a newly manufactured lighter and quieter version Nolan had specifically developed for the production alongside older versions.
>Over 2 million feet (610 kilometres) of IMAX 70 mm film was used to shoot The Odyssey. As a single IMAX camera can only hold roughly three minutes of film, actors had to pause during longer scenes while the camera was reloaded before resuming their performances.

Girls with bows became a meme at some point considering how much upper body strength is required to properly use longbows but Katniss definitely wasn't the worst thing ever. Jennifer Lawrence with a bow certainly looks far more competent than whatever the fuck Matt Damon was doing in this movie

>how can they make something this bad?
>even without all the woke shit everything else is comedically bad
Because they are businesses, and this is a product that people WILL consume, and they will profit from it.

Mostly the same with Disney Starslop. I'm not sure how many of the people funding or making those films thought they would be literally good, surely some of them did. But the point was to make a profit after buying the SW IP, and they did that. It's literally just business.

Unfortunately, these businesses don't prioritize making art, which they prioritize even less so than they use to.

Film has been commoditized more or a lot more than it was 20 years ago and before. We are in the Super Corporate Slop Era of film. :(

It wouldn't fix the problem that they are essentially "giving" free attacks to the opposing fighter. That will always make it look off to the viewer. Like two kids choreographing a play fight WWE style.

Him being out of focus and that centered in the last shot looks like they used an outtake in the final edit.

nigga the POINT was that this bow required so much strength that only the suitor who could shoot an arrow from it would be considered for marriage
NOBODY could pull the bowstring except for Odysseus himself when he came back. So yeah, it should require massive strength, and yet he's using it like some toy.

Someone needs to reign Nolan in and tell him he can't use the imax camera anymore.

So is The Return good?
I thought it was basically what Nolan's movie is, a modern concept dressed in classical looks, but seeing the webms and screenshots in these threads is making me reconsider it heavily
If it's not just good in comparison to the piece of shit we're discussing
>>
>>221841810
oh yeah, that's correct, I remember now.
Didn't he actually have to shoot the arrow literally THROUGH axe blades, too?
>>
>>221842097
Yes, he had to be strong enough to string the bow
strong enough to pull back and release an arrow on such a massive bow
And aim that arrow through a bunch of axe-handles to hit a target.

The suitors couldn't even string the bow. That's why everyone is laughing at this shit, bc Damon is using it like a fischer-price toy.

Compare that scene to the one from Ralph Fiennes' 'The Return' - his bow is over half the size of his body.

Shut the fuck up retard
Everyone knows how fucking bows work ffs

>Ralph Fiennes' 'The Return'
So there's an adaptation of part of the Odyssey starring Fiennes and Juliet Binoche with 80% good reviews that most people haven't heard of, and then there's a corporate slop version from Dolan. wtf
