Tony was the main character and they needed to make him a little likeable. he could be a racist, a thief, an adulterer, a murderer, but having him him Carmella even once would've been where a lot of people went, "oh, this character is totally irredeemable" and tuned out. Christopher hitting Adrianna is a little different because he's more unstable, less comfortable, a heavy drug user, and crucially, only a little bigger than her. Its a lot more horrible watching a woman get beat by a guy that's 6'2" and 300 lbs than it is by a guy that's 5'9" and 170
