What were you before?I was something vaguely left but I was always pretty skeptical about most things associated with the 'new left' like decoloniality or intersectionality. Partly because these things easily ally themselves with existing power structures (something right wing people have been pointing out for years) but also the total lack of any critical introspection about it. Not to mention the obvious vilification of white people as a kind of othering Other. Also reading more philosophy generally made me find materialism as a comprehensive metaphysics pretty unsatisfying which rules out Marxism. I think the crisis of meaning which you see in existentialism hasn't been resolved and is still omnipresent and I just don't view anything on the left as really challenging that. Great, we might achieve wealth redistribution, but what then? There's a sense in which intelligent people on the right try to integrate the political into an system that's existentially satisfying, which is where traditionalism, nationalism, or religion enters into things. That can happen in a really flawed way for sure but I think the foundation for something new and productive is there at least.Finally, I've found friendships with leftists can fall apart overnight because their ethics have randomly shifted. At least right wing people put value in friendship itself. I have the same right wing friends now as when I was much further to the left.

Just came back from the first screening here in Italy, don’t even know where to start. I don’t use this word lightly but yeah, this movie is a masterpiece. This definition takes into account the sense of scale, the cinematography, the acting, the sound design, the soundtrack, each of which, when combined, elevates the movie to a level you see every fifteen, twenty years if you are lucky. The Odyssey incarnates all the reasons why I fell in love with cinema many years ago. Everything looks so real, so tangible, you feel for the hero, you feel disgust, amazement, fear, estrangement, love… I‘ve found myself in tears a few times for some specific sequences involving Calypso, the war of Troy and sailing through the sea which I consider some of the best material put on film in the last decade. I won’t spoil them for you, but you’ll get what I mean once you‘ll see it. And most importantly, don’t fall for the controversy surrounding this movie: it is totally fabricated and inconsistent. To Nolan I say bravo for the sheer courage of putting into film such an ambitious idea. He delivered in a way that surpassed all my expectations
