Feels like this one flew under the radar for /tv/. It's kino of the highest order, bros. Bi Gan does a wonderful job exploring the boundaries of film as a language.

For those of you who have seen it, is there a particular segment that absorbed you?

I gotta watch it again because it felt too much like a fever dream my first viewing and it overwhelmed me

Yeah, I hear you on that. I definitely felt a bit lost during the first transition ("sound"). How good was the vampire story, though? Amazing camera work and pacing.

I went to a screening that had Bi Gan doing a Q+A. I really liked it. Besides the final vignette, I quite liked the 3rd 'smell' segment. I think that segment shown that Bi Gan had a little bit more range than his typical stuff. I appreciated the wuxia shitposting at the end too. Definitely cinephile bait though.

That’s one really fucking cool movie poster, I tell ya hwat.

Redpill me on this movie with the really cool movie poster.

Based. Is "cinephile bait" a pejorative in this context?
He must have given some good thoughts at the Q&A. Lucky you.

Basically, in the future films are outlawed and people have lost their imaginations. It's a depressing, ruined world. However, some people held onto the past and still attempt to visit it by dreaming. We visit the world through the dreams of one of those dying people, called a "monster" (really an ode to 1920s-style monster designs). The movie then takes place through six senses, each covering loosely connected vignettes: sight, sound, smell, touch, hearing, and mind (not in that order). The stories culminate as an expression of the soul of film, which clearly cannot be replicated by any other means. It seems to end with many souls revisiting or awakening to the possibility of dreaming (best expressed through film).

A little bit of both. He is obviously being groomed to be the PRC's flagship nonpolitical arthouse guy, since he speaks through his long time film festival handler, who kind of has a weird persona of his own. To me, Bi Gan is very much a weeb/art student that got into filmmaking on accident. His story about Stalker always gets me. He watched it in 15 minute slices over the course of several months, since the film made him sick/bored to watch in long slices. I think the final segment has strong cult appeal as an individual short film.

Interesting, I had no idea about any of that. I haven't followed China's arthouse movement closely, but I've really enjoyed Bi Gan's and Hu Bo's (RIP) work. I heard that Bo an hero'd because a producer threatened to cut his film from 3.5 hours to something more generally palatable. Gotta respect the dedication to his craft.

I'm glad we've got Gan in film, though. I would love to see him journey into animation. He could produce something that rivals the best work of Oshii, Kon, Otomo, etc.

Do you know if he ever ended up watching Stalker in one sitting? I wonder if he was ever able to get through Solaris lol. Now that's a heady story.

I forgot his motive for watching Stalker besides wanting to seem 'in' with arthouse in college. He was originally a poet, I think. I recall him saying something along the lines of prior to that experience, his view of movies were Stephen Chow flicks you'd watch with family. However, if you watch stuff like his Criterion closet segment, he clearly jumped into world cinema afterwards. He does mention anime a lot in some of his interviews. I vividly recall him mentioning anime element powers in regards to costuming in Long Day's Journey into Night, which gave me a bit of a laugh. Overall, a pretty fun guy for a Chinese millennial. I don't think I recall him ever mentioning doing a full straight rewatch of Stalker, though.

Certainly seems like it. Appreciate the insights, anon. Have a nice weekend.

where to watch ?

I caught it on the Criterion Channel.

Incidentally, the CC has Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Shocked the hell out of me when I found out, but I'd been meaning to give it a try and I'm very glad I found it on there. Loving it so far.
