I always just called it a remote control or just remote. Sometimes I still hear people call it a "clicker" or "channel changer". This one weird family that babysat me called it "the box".

>>221850801The only person I have ever in my life heard call these anything besides "remotes" was my grandfather, who said "clicker". But he was born in 1924.
>>221850801Remote. Old people say clicker because the first remotes they had were often wired and had tactile buttons that made an audible click when pressed like a mechanical keyboard.
>>221850801the box would be the cable box.
I call it the do-for (pronounced doofer) because of my nan.
>>221850879also bopper - it's what my grandpa always called it when we'd go to his house after school.
>>221850958This. Our first VCR was in 1982 and it was a small square box on a wire that made a loud click when you hit the buttons. My folks always called it the clicker. My mom is 71 and still calls it the clicker.I grew up calling it the remote, but admit I will sometimes call it a clicker when with younger family members just to mess with them and laugh as they correct me.
>>221850801My Father always insisted on calling it “the control”. He had a special place for it on the coffee table, which he called “mission HQ”. He’d become very distressed if the control wasn’t returned to mission HQ to “debrief”, as he called it. Without a debrief, you couldn’t be trusted to “take point” on a new “mission” (choosing what to watch) until you had passed “remedial boot”. He didn’t get violent, but he’d start acting out like a drill sergeant, following us around the house screaming orders. My younger brother always struggled with his maths homework, so “the Captain” (that’s what dad insisted we call him when he was in this mood), would stand behind him when he was doing it. Hands on his hips, yelling at him. Repeatedly asking him if he loved mathematics yet? Did he understand mathematics yet? Our rooms were next to each other and I think even I have PTSD from the Captain’s math lessons. As an adult my younger brother got diagnosed with mild dysalculia, which is like dyslexia but for numbers apparently. He asked dad to apologise or he wouldn’t come to Christmas dinner. Dad refused to apologise, so at the dinner I tried one last time to reason with him, but the entire thing turned into him screaming at me about using the salad tongs wrong, and how that meant he couldn’t trust me in combat. I have no idea where this behaviour comes from by the way, my dad worked in accounting, and he doesn’t like war movies - too violent. Anyway, Mum and I gave up and he’s never spoken to my younger brother since. I think we’re all waiting for him to die, but he keeps himself fit by rigorous daily workouts where he walks up and down the stairs in my childhood home as fast as he can for half an hour. None of us were ever allowed to use the stairs during this time, so you had to decide - upstairs or downstairs.
Clicker isnt exactly ancient latin
>>221850993No, it wasn't. At least not in this case. The dad would say "hand me the box" and his daughter would pass him the remote.
>>221850801Little computer
channel changer is 100% the only thing I've ever heard it called
tv remote or remote control depending on whom i'm talking to
Clicker remotes were actually an ingenious design. They had a spring loaded button that struck a metal rod to make an ultrasonic sound that activated different functions for the notes or frequency of the rod. They required no batteries and were reliable.
>>221851080You should call all video games "tapes" or "Nintendo" to really sell the out of touch boomer angle.

Who tf would call it anything other than a remote control? Is that a regional thing like how people call soda “pop”?

Streaming stick have such shitty remotes in comparison. Barely any buttons and lot of times literal "ad" buttons.
>>221852635All modern remotes are like that. And it's literally an ad, companies pay to have their shortcut keys on remotes.I have a UHD player and having one with a remote that doesn't have any fucking streaming ads on it was seriously a non-insignificant factor in choosing which one I wanted to buy.
>>221852034early household electronics were treated as an extension of the living space. Stuff like TV sets and Hi-Fi stereo systems were often built into prefab furniture units and were meant to be displayed in an aesthetically pleasing way. Over time, form gave way to function and function gave way to convenience. Just look at smart phones now for example, your current model probably looks identically boring to the previous five models

>>221852635>Streaming stick have such shitty remotes in comparison. Barely any buttons and lot of times literal "ad" buttons.still have this for my tv/Nvidia Sheild..best remote ever made, but no longer sold, and software not updated for newer models..fucking hate everyone>Logitech stopped manufacturing their famous Harmony line of universal remotes in April 2021, and officially ended support for the desktop software in May 2025. While you can still find legacy models on the secondary market, they can no longer be reprogrammed or updated
>>221852702I care more about function than form.A good example is vidya consoles. Like the PS5 design is about form and its a fucking nightmare where taking that thing apart is not for the end user yet it needs to be taken apart to clean.
>>221850801my family calls it "the zapper"
>>221852695Pisses me off so fucking much. I did fall for it and buy the big 4, then my remote broke and now they only sell dogshit buttons no one has like direct tv and peacock. Who the fuck pays for peacock?

>>221852034Until the 70s-80s most durable good had little to no plastic in them, they were made with a lot of metal which is harder to shape than plastic. Designers had to work around that and often the best way was just making it look good with flourishes and unique styling to set it apart from their competition.Injection molded plastic is cheap and you can make it in virtually any shape but there was still a holdover desire to differentiate your products from all the others. Now they focus on fewer buttons because it saves money.
I used to call it the tv turner because that's what my boomer dad called it. Now I say remote.
