the constant cuts to Pattinson telling the other suitors what’s just dropped out of the ceiling and telling them to go pick it up was also terrible. Like they didn’t trust the audience to understand the very basic premise of the scene. This happens three times. And they basically reuse the same shot each time.

i mean there are entire theorems to prove that basically 1+1=2 but at the end of the day theyre just symbols man, the fact your kids told you they cant imagine two exactly same things doesnt mean anything the distinction is arbitrary. 2 isnt the same 2 in 8+2 as in 2+2 even though they have the same values, 2 in one context allows you to get a particular number, which in another context, may be the only number for a particular equation. You can choose to view it as exactly the same or not, who cares?

And im not even going to answer that mirror question, its like the same as that TikTok mirror egg paper meme, questions predicated on bad foundational intuitions.

the whole movie is like, spiritually gay on an underlying level. Holland and Pattinson seem less Oedipal competition and more like they want to pound each other's butts. It's like if the jacking off the whale scene from Moby Dick was the whole movie. Pattinson carries a small wooden phallic fetish object home to represent Pattinson's emasculation from hiding from his refusal to serve, (ties into elliot pages casting imo even tho they'd never admit to this level of gender casting) juxtaposed with the fetish object symbol of his wife he basically keeps forgetting about that is also a visual of a woman strapped to a pole, which then happens to him in the sirens scene (sirens, supposed to be beautiful and enticing women, not depicted, it's instead a scene about the loyalty and love of men being tested.

Its a cynical, nihilistic heroic epic with no heroes and no Gods. It ends with Odysseus concluding he should have died and being overwhelmed with regret. In the actual poem Odysseus learns to be a better man, redeems himself and heroically saves his family and kingdom.

This is all Hollywood has to offer you. There is no hope, no honor, no glory, no redemption, you might as well just give up and hope that the next generation doesn't fuck up even though they've been taught the same hopeless bullshit you have.

The irony is that despite its nihilism Nietzsche would have hated it for how defeatist it is.

Nietszche didn't think that nihilism entailed hopelessness. That was the point of the quote. To Nietszche you must rise to the level of a God to find your own meaning. That's what being an ubermensch is.

To Hollywood nihilism is just giving up because nothing has meaning.

i see what you meant. i just wouldnt ever call nietzsche a nihilist without the caveat that he is specifically talking about post nihilism, finding personal meaning after experiencing the existential dread that there is no cosmic meaning to anything. i suppose that recognition still defines it as nihilism to those who don't follow him.

You can't imagine my disappointment as the movie turned into another modern war trauma film. Why can't we have the actual Odysseus who humbles himself in his journey and learns to be a greater man than the one that left Troy.

>>221860510
Whole film unironically made him just stupid.

The final sequence with Polyphemus is especially dumb, he just fucking shoots the cyclops with a bow because he spat out a comrades helmet. Literally killed the whole point of the sequence where in the original epic Odysseus showed his arrogance by boasting with his name to Polyphemus after escaping.

>>
>>221860584
>Why can't we have the actual Odysseus who humbles himself in his journey and learns to be a greater man than the one that left Troy.

I guess we're just not supposed to have male heroes any more. Odysseus is a hero, he's a flawed hero who has to suffer from his own mistakes in order to become a hero; but he's a hero. He overcomes his own flaws and becomes a great man to protect his family and his people and he's rewarded with a good life. That's the sort of story that inspires a culture and a people and the post modernists in Hollywood don't believe in that sort of story any more. The idea that you could be a hero is from their perspective childish and naive. So they tell us the same hopeless depressing stories over and over again. Only women get to be heroes and they all get to be flawless heroes, heroes that never make mistakes or suffer, heroes who everyone loves. Odysseus is the antithesis of everything modern Hollywood represents.

the source material is Homer's Odyssey where this is what happens, Odysseus comes home and gets vengeance on Penelope's suitors in the fashion of an epic hero.

i hate politics but love this story so if you set aside the DEI whatever bullshit he actually did a pretty good job recreating this story with a broad appeal. that to me is cool if you have actually read Homer the same way that Troy is cool.

the black kween was stupid yes and elliot page was not convincingly a man but was actually pretty solid as undead and altogether those two only got a couple of minutes of screentime. these stupid understandably controversial castings did not ultimately detract from the momentum of a good cinematic depiction of one of the great stories of all time.

if anything some of anne hathaway's acting felt too urban bitchy and also the fact that the whole thing was very american english detracted from the overall tone of the movie

Isn't it that Nolan et al. don't really care to make the action very good or authentic (like costumes and sets either...) because they're just trying to make a profit, not a great film, and they know this type of shit is sufficient to make one? so no second takes or expert opinions needed. Not like a movie made by a real, serious director. Slopmaster.

The sequence with the Laestrygonians in the epic was a lot more devastating and terrifying compared to how they were shown here. The whole episode in the epic was meant to show Odyssues' good senses (not disembarking and anchoring in the cove) and the pure savagery that seemingly civilized people can engage in (cannibalism, disregarding hospitality).

In the film Odysseus just stumbles into some random expedition party of armored ogryns kek.

It has nothing to do with your eyes actually. It's entirely due to the way we turn things to look at them in a mirror. If I write nigger on a piece of paper and turn it to point at the mirror, the n will be on the right and that's what people usually call mirrored writing
But if I flip the piece of paper upside down, the n stays on the left and suddenly the mirror inverts up and down instead

>>
>>221854770
The words "left", "right" are relative to the person who says them: If someone stands in front of you, face to face just like in a mirror, your right is their left and vice versa, it is something basic that you are taught in elementary school. Also in elementary school you are taught that gravity exists and pulls objects toward the center of the earth, meaning "left and right" are different phenomena from "up and down". It is not surprising that his interpretation of The Odyssey is what it is, the interpretation of such text requires hermeneutics, exegesis, semiotics, syntax etc. And this imbecile don't understand how words work, or the simplest phenomena that exist in reality

I know he's kind of a beta cuck in the original too but I do kinda wish they gave Tom Holland something to do. Let him have Robert Patterson or something, they've at least shared multiple scenes.

If you put a mirror on the ceiling and drop something from it, in the mirror it looks big and gets smaller, meaning that something that fell, in the mirror went "upward". Your problem is the same as Nolan’s: in this context, "reverse" does not mean "doing the opposite". A mirror doesn't reverse reality, it reflects the light that hits its surface, and what you perceive depends on the mirror’s position and your point of view.

I'm going to write whatever I want to write, deal with it. So if I want to say that Nolan is a hack who doesn't even understand how a mirror works, then the suggestion is that he should go back and learn the basics, go back to elementary school where they teach the very thing he seems confused about, which has 100% everything to do with understanding the words "left and right" and "up and down", as well as gravity, before trying to make a movie based on a foundational canonical text that has been studied by some of the greatest minds in history, that's "somehow" how .
