Complaining about the lack of historical accuracy in including black people in the Odyssey makes no sense. The original Odyssey poem was not historical accurate either. And it wasn’t just the magic and monsters. It was the descriptions of weapons and armor (which were Iron Age, when this is supposed to be set in the Bronze Age, a difference of easily 500 years), the burial rites (cremation wasn’t a common practice in Bronze Age Greece), the ships described vary by century, and so on. Imagine a story set in early 1800s America, only people are driving modern cars, using modern weapons and so on. That’s basically what Homer did for his time Having an ethnically diverse cast is just another anachronism, only it’s modern times instead of Homer’s time.

If historical accuracy doesn't guide aesthetic choices, then the aesthetic choices will reflect instead the filmmakers' modern, second-hand ideas of what fits the period. I don't watch fantasy movies to see a reflection of the modern world we already inhabit, I watch them to be transported elsewhere. So it doesn't work to have aesthetics be guided by historical ignorance rather than knowledge. For one thing, it will not look as convincing as genuine historical accuracy would. For another, it only works as long as you're equally as ignorant as the filmmakers. The more you learn about the period, the less you'll be able to believe the movie when you watch it. It'll just look like some modern person's ignorant idea of what the ancient world looked like. So historical accuracy should absolutely guide aesthetics, and then, from that starting point, the filmmakers' imagination should exaggerate to fit the larger-than-life mode of fantasy.
