This was explained in depth in the books: basically there were many magical rings around and finding one that made you invisible wasn't all that rare.
It wasn't until Gandalf saw the ring that he put 2 and 2 together. Remember that Bilbo never tells Gandalf he found the ring or what kind of ring it was.
