Van Helsing is absolute kino entertainment and was only "hated" because critics didn't like the over the top campiness.

I think there's like 40 minutes video explaining that Van Helsing is angel Gabriel who was friends with Dracula who was in the order fighting evil, but then his wife died and he quit, then they fought because he's evil now, and Van Helsing was sad, so he lost memory due to his sitting in a tavern and drinking for 10+ years
and then he forgor and was happy and just lived for centuries fighting evil until his fate brought him to Dracula who was captured in a mirror

The dude who played Dracula did a pretty great job too, just the right amount of serious and cheesy. I loved when he got kicked or thrown into a fireplace, and he walked out, looking annoyed as he healed from the horrific burns

I saw this in theaters when I was 12 and we walked out of the theater halfway through and hung out in the mall until we got picked up.
