I'm a European, and even live somewhat close to the story's origin. I've read some of the classics and I find Homer to be the least deserving of his stature. Personally, I think it gets bonus points for its age, same as Gilgamesh, which I also find unimpressive. It's also possible its a lot better if you read those in verse in their original languages, but that's inaccessible to me.
