Holy shit was this a pretentious waste of time. I looked up the critic response and of course they all glazed it.
>pretentious When someone uses this buzzword it's a sure fire sign of kino. Which sucks in this instance because I actually agree that this movie wasn't all that great. It's actually pretty generic, "monster child" is a very tired trope. The directing also wasn't anything special, just carried by Icelandic scenery.
>>221867036I enjoyed the subtle characterization but this is very much a "nothing happens" film, and I have similar feelings about that phrase as you do the word pretentious. It was a waste of characters, who didnt really grow or make difficult choices. Pseuds will hide behind >muh allegory, but end of the day, I want to be entertained and/or moved and I was neither.
>>221867127I don't really care for any of that, like I don't care if the character grows or not, not every movie is supposed to be about someone's life completely changing no matter how fantastical the events are. It's not even how shit works IRL. My problem was that the film was simply dull. If you want to make a slow paced creepy surreal movie you need filmmaking finesse to back it up. Which the Icelandic guy who directed this lacked. Although it should be noted that this is his first movie, directing debuts tend to actually flop on average, there's room for improvement. But considering he participated in a making of a concert movie for Travis Scott after this...I think he just wants to stick to music videos. Also, Bela Tarr (RIP) was a producer on this movie, an actually great slow cinema filmmaker.
