When you buy a ticket to see a film in theatres, you can walk out after seeing some of it to get a refund. You can't see the movie beforehand so you can only buy a movie ticket based on the marketing.

If you watch a movie partway or in its entirety, but hate the movie, it is not reflected in the sales. The sales claim you loved the movie, when in fact you were tricked by the PR.

So why do people care about ticket sales?

In fact a better indicator of a movie being good is if you bought multiple tickets. I for example have purchased two tickets to see movies I trusted to be good.

People want validation so if number go up they can say "see, it gud!" and if number go down "see, it bad!"
This stupid movie was always going to do numbers. The vast, vast majority of people are not sentient, they basically crawl around and piss and shit and eat and fuck (sometimes all at once). They just want to be entertained by anything that will grab their attention for a few hours. The movie could be Christopher Nolan dangling keys in front of a camera for three hours and it would still do a billion because "WOW CHRISDOPHA NOLAND? WOW, HE DID DA DARK KNIGHT HIS MOVIES EPIIIIIIIIC"

>Why is box office reflective of a good movie and not good marketing?

Who ever said this. Several Marvel and Fast and the Furious movies cracked over 1 billion dollars. No one ever said they were God's gift to humanity and the arts.

Odyssey will never become a cult classic.

Except that is the overall consensus. The vast majority of people will say it sold extremely well so it was good, same with media outlets.

If the cast was decent and the costumes didn't look like poop it would make 10x the money
