When you buy a ticket to see a film in theatres, you can walk out after seeing some of it to get a refund. You can't see the movie beforehand so you can only buy a movie ticket based on the marketing.If you watch a movie partway or in its entirety, but hate the movie, it is not reflected in the sales. The sales claim you loved the movie, when in fact you were tricked by the PR.So why do people care about ticket sales? In fact a better indicator of a movie being good is if you bought multiple tickets. I for example have purchased two tickets to see movies I trusted to be good.
