Objectively a bad Sci-fi movie.It's just an action schlock Michael Bay style without the eyecandy fanservice.All Sci-fi elements removed or diminished.No world building, setup or explanation of what the higher stakes are.Things just happen and are never explained to the audience.No Butlerian Jihad ever mentioned.No explanation what is a mentat.No explanation why Jessica can speak with the fetus growing inside her.No mention about the Guild, the Navigators.It's a stripped down, dumbed down, action movie in space.This includes Dune 2 btw. It adds nothing.

>>221868812>you want the movie to be 4 hours with exposition dumps everwhere?Last I checked, the two movies together were over 5 hours long and we were getting exposition dumps from Zendaya about some "colonial excess" bullshit that wasn't even in the novel in the first place.Villeneuve really didn't understand that the universe of Dune is actually quite awful for the little people and the fact that an incredibly rare good man like Leto Atreides was brutally murdered and his house wiped out was all the impetus Paul needed to essentially reboot the entire Empire.
Never read the books or looked up any lore.The first movie was good, the characters/factions that are introduced are interesting and it has good pacing so it doesn't bore you.The second movie I just zoned out because it was slow and boring with the bigger stakes being some vague prophecy shit. The soggy napkin Zendaya was portraying also didn't help

They are bad films and not because they are unfaithful to the books, in fact it's the opposite. A director who wanted to make an actually enjoyable Dune ought to take a few risks. For example, there are too many characters to do justice to in a single feature length film. Duncan Idaho, Gurney Halleck and Thufir Hawat should be merged into a single character, called Duncan Idaho, who trains Paul, buys him time to escape from the initial Sardaukar attack, is thought to be dead, but is actually captured and forced to work for the Harkonnens. He shows up right at the end of the film to save Paul from being backstabbed or something. Ensemble cast works for a prestige cable show, not so much for an already complex futuristic action drama.
