I think I can agree with him that the movie “works.” But horror mostly “works” on its own— the audience does a tremendous amount of work on their own to imagine horror. I don’t believe it is a great example of horror, either. It’s just spooky scenes strung together. (I think for example, Ring is an incredible horror movie.)The idea is simple and uninteresting. Extremely well trodden territory and seemingly contains no original idea. It fact it doesn’t have many ideas at all. So I find this odd.The movie also has no depth, the protagonist doesn’t transcend the conflict of the story. In fact he sort of just denies anything is happening and doesn’t do anything until he dies and the movie ends. People seem more interested in debating whether or not they sympathize with the protagonist’s PoV, which is not an interesting question.Critics and commentators also seem to agree with me, apparently obsessed with classifying this or that character as “good” or “bad,” a degenerate form of analysis that is fit more for picture books and children’s bedtime stories that even early, young adult literature. So I find that odd. Again Nolan clearly makes great films. But whenever he talks I wonder how he’s doing it because he doesn’t seem like he knows either. But then again, mediocre, nothing stories like Obsession have actually captured the American imagination.

You can't really name one that's a carbon copy of Obsession.So to add to my previous argument, I think originality is your best shot at success as a filmmaker in 2026, but if you can't do that, taking something that works and exploring it further, or improving it (adding the "sexy" to it, if you will) also works. This is true for success even outside of the movie context. If you look at what Steve Jobs did with the iPhone for example, it wasn't anything new, he just added the sexy to it. And now we have this zombified generation as a result, but that's another topic.

BB with all the fear gas segments and the harbor fights, TDK has a jump scare, Oppenheimer is full of existential dread and now The Odyssey has the Cyclops scene and Circe turning all the men into pigs. You could even argue Memento is more psychological horror rather than thriller.Nolan has always loved horror because his philosophy is that movies should be about making you feel emotions rather than think too deeply despite a lot of his movies having very elaborate plots and setpieces. Horror stories often have simplistic plots and are more character driven which is not really his wheelhouse outside of maybe Memento. Horror is all about having good ideas with proper execution so since Nolan can't rely on manipulating his audience into thinking they've just watched something deep and profound which makes them spam 10/10 on all his movies on IMDB/Letterboxd he's been hesitating a lot since a lot of his movies kind of fall apart on repeat viewings, but normies really love that sense of epic scale and visual spectacle so he's 100% right in his approach to moviemaking.
