Not the lameass softball dullard Youtuber kind, but the actually interesting work that tries to present cool concepts and ideas through the medium of film/video. Adam Curtis is probably the most popular video essayist today, but there's a been fair number of artists that worked within this realm over the decades: Chris Marker, Harun Farocki, Hito Steyerl, Jon Rafman, Nam June Paik, Jean Luc Godard (his Histoires du Cinéma still holds up as his best work), Guy Maddin, Robert Kramer, countless Nazi and Soviet propaganda pieces, and so on. I think you could also consider something like Koyaanisqatsi as a film essay, albeit an abstract one.You guys got any favorites? Anything to say about the sorry state of the genre as Youtube junk food? Do you still believe in its potential? And fuck Nerdwriter1 always and forever.
isn't MDE's College Cunts like a mock video essay?

>>221984829You guys ever watch this shit?>Dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y: An acclaimed hijacking documentary that eerily foreshadowed 9/11. We meet the romantic skyjackers who fought their revolutions and won airtime on the passenger planes of the 1960s and ’70s. By the 1990s, such characters were apparently no more, replaced on our TV screens by stories of anonymous bombs in suitcases. Director Johan Grimonprez investigates the politics behind this change, at the same time unwrapping our own complicity in the urge for ultimate disaster.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSeYWGAAJyILooks neat

Chris Marker has a wonderful series about ancient and classic Greece called Owl's Legacy I've watched it long ago online, but I couldn't find it again, there are snippets on youtube though. Each episode focus on a Greek term.
>>221986227Hell to the fucking yes. I watched this the other day and it was absolutely wonderful. Lots of insightful and illuminating talking heads all throughout it, highlighting how our treatment of Greek legacy has profoundly shifted our worldviews. It introduced me to Cornelius Castoriadis' works, amongst others. Can't believe this got mentioned on /tv/ desu. This channel should still host all of the episodeshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLkhTCJwW5c

>>221988070That's true, and a few others were Antonioni, who got the chinese very upset with his Chung Kuo (i think they may have legitimately wanted to kill him), and Joris Iven who made How Yukong Moved the Mountains. A merry band.

>>221988273>>221988295China and Korea tried courting western Communists in this era to prove Maoism and Juche superior systems to eastern bloc communism (the sino-soviet split).
>>221988273> The editorial was followed by a mass anti-Antonioni campaign, with activities including televised denouncements, written criticisms from around the country, and schoolchildren being taught anti-Antonioni songs.[8] lmao
>>221988494This is why the chinese were always so much better than the soviets. They had style.
>>221989482WTF all they had was a grey Hassan Piker shirt and some red shit. USSR created nearly all Communist iconography and art.
>>221989851That's fashion. Mao had them DO things in style and in unison. They wholly believed in the idea that putting together a song calling this random italian filmmaker (to them) a retard was an ownage. That's some pizzazz
