I have never seen the Sopranos but I like the memed phrase "Whatever happened there?". So I looked the actual scene up and was surprised to find out that it has a different energy to what I expected. I thought "Whatever happened there?" would be someone taunting another person by reminding him of something shameful or painful that happened in the past. But its usage in the show is someone trying to quickly brush past the death of a characters brother to avoid making him angry. The exact opposite of taunting. So why do people meme "Whatever happened there? in a totally different way? It shouldn't even have a question mark at the end. It wasn't a question!
Anon, shit can be appropriated for different purposes you know.But I like the theory that he was in fact taunting Philly while pretending to be nonchalant about it. This is supported by a scene where Carmine Jr. actually plays his father in a similar way.
