The film came out last year. I didn't like it, people often talk about horror movies abandoning horror concept on drama, then you watch the movie and the horror is never abandoned the drama is just in parallel and people are literally complaining that a horror movie has a plot in characters.
Not this tho, this film literally switches genre from horror to like an existential indie melodrama from 2013 with a supernatural backdrop. The characters were also pretty annoying and it wasn't even especially interesting visually.
It is pretty hilarious that NEON picked this movie up for distribution just now tho. The movie was rejected by all companies a year ago and literally had to be released digitally by Letterboxd. But after Backrooms had succeeded NEON is suddenly trying to give this a theatrical spin.

I used to live in South Dakota, and had some friends in Madison, Wisconsin, and I can remember driving across southern Minnesota on I-90 at night in winter where there is NOTHING but the road ahead of you in the bubble of your headlights, and there is almost no traffic because its in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere, and driving alone does feel genuinely isolating and you're brain just starts going to weird places and you WILL check that there is no one in the back seat JUST IN FUCKING CASE.
Right outside of Fairmont, MN there was a big radio tower with giant pink neon letters up the side that says "Jesus Saves" and its honestly the only sign of civilization you've seen in like 4 hours, and you really get that sense of "Its no one but me and jesus out here."

This has been out for months, I don't know why retards are treating this like some generation war memeshit when it isn't anything like that at all. I remember only finding out about it when there was a nice thread on here, it really isn't a traditional horror movie like most of this thread is assuming it is. The thread I found this movie from had anons calling it Lovecraftian, and that isn't entirely accurate but I think it loosely describes the vibe you can expect. There are torrents floating around and I highly recommend giving it a chance, one of my favorites of the year

Is this based on the 11 Miles creepypasta?
>>
>>221987529
>societal woes! muh trauma!
Texas Chainsaw Massacre was directly influenced by the Vietnam war.
Carpenter himself said part of the paranoia he was trying to get in the movie was because AIDS was a boogeyman that had just been announced, and you had everyone freaking out because seemingly ANYONE could have poison blood that infects others and slowly takes them over to proliferate and by the time you know you're turned into a monster.
You can absolutely put social woes and trauma into plenty of old horror flicks as their internal motivation.
Sure plenty are just explotation trash trying to get young starletts naked on screen and fill a 90 minute run time while the teens in the audience engaged in heavy petting.
>>
>>221986361
I remember reading a creeypasta similar to this on /r/no sleep about a flight or train ride that never ended. If we're adapting creepypastas and /r/nosleep adaptations I hope they do the one where he finds a portal to a stone age alt timeline, they capture and force him to impregnate a girl of questionable age for science, he escapes, goes back to Earth and comes back to the stone age world with guns to take back his bride.

I mean it was great for my gas mileage.
I had an old chevy sprint (the geo metro before the geo line started).
It was stick, and had a lawnmower engine under the hood, but I honestly got 45 miles to the gallon in that thing, and could get by on filling up once every five weeks or so, and on more than one occasion I ran out of gas on the road because I would genuinely forget the concept that a car needed gas.
I genuinely loved living out there, back when Gateway 2000 was a big brand. People were generally pretty chill, and we were just left unsupervised because what was the worst that was going to happen.

RETARD ALERT RETARD ALERT

This summer...one man must scrape his way to...THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL
>>
according to Wikipedia the everyone gives up and stops driving except the Asian guy and this is how it ends

>At 1,153,956 miles, James experiences rain for the first time since arriving on the road, confusing and scaring him. After an inordinate amount of driving later, he eventually arrives upon dozens of abandoned cars blocking the road. Going past them on foot, he finally reaches the end of the road - a circle of asphalt surrounded by cars from various periods, with only a single sign reading "ROAD ENDS". Aghast, James sits motionless on the ground for over a day. Eventually returning to the car, he consumes the Clif bar and weeps over the taste. After finally having a screaming session like Day and Fisher had, James drives off in the direction he came, speaking aloud that he "is coming".

>Down the road, James happens on another empty vehicle, and drags a lethargic man from the side of the road into the car. As he drives, James asks the man one of the questions that he and Fisher debated before they were trapped on the road.

None of this makes sense. The movie ends with a there is no hope or some bullshit like that ending. Why do people swarm the cars if they know there is no hope? I would get mad if I watched this I am not against bad endings. I always champion the Brit version of The Descendant with the sad hopeless ending is superior to the good American ending but this just seems to be a downer for the sake of being a downer with no real message or meaning

>>221989136

>>
>>221989152
It's some boring commentary on life. Life has a beginning and it has an end. Your friends come and go (people leaving the car) to pursue their own things in life. The main character is obsessed with solving the puzzle and not enjoying life. He eats a candy bar and now enjoys life.

The issue is he starts driving back. Life is not like that. It's full of regret. When he reached the end there should be no going back and some punishment for trying to get to the end so fast.

Then there is the people stuck chasing any cars that pass. If the message is stop and smell the roses, why do they so badly want to keep going to the end since they already made the choice to stay?

You know, Saw has actual logic about why the main bad guy chooses his victims. The backrooms explained why it is the way it is dependent on who goes inside of it. Some demonic force is torturing random teenagers because they don't understand they should stop and enjoy life, something all teens are guilty of? Stupid shit.
>>
>>221986361
Wasn't this just done with some movie about being stuck in an endless corridor of a subway station? Is this the new slop wave?
>>
>>221989161
There is a trend on facebook of 6/10 and hotter woman pretending to be autistic and alone. One I remember looked like a supermodel, lived in a rich person's apartment complex in Dallas and had a well paying job in fashion and said she was a lonely friendless autist. It is so obvious she is lying but hundreds of simps and woman reply to every video "supporting" her. I am noticing woman who claim to not ever having a relationship freeze when you ask them if they ever had sex. I think the woman mind equates being a woman that has constant one night stands but no long term relationships as being the same as a male incel
>>
>>221989504
You can actually already do this in New York and it far, FAR more terrifying to attempt IRL.
>>
>>221989504
I usually like this slop but that movie was boring despite being praised so well. I applaud the movie for actually trying to be pro life in an era of super wokeness but the movie itself was meh devoid of any tension. Even at the start they tried to be tense showing he had asthma and an inhaler and you think "oh if he doesn't get out in time he will die" but no they abandon that subplot a third of the way in

>>
>>221989554
look, I am a millennial but this shit isn't much more low brow than "what group of teenagers will Freddie or Jason or Michael Myers kill this time". Horror has always been a low quality genre.
>>
>>221989613
The difference is I actually like those people in those movies.
They remind me of my older cousins and all their cool friends that I looked up to in the 80s when I was just a little kid.
Zoomer horror ensembles don't resonate with me the same way at all really.
>>
>>221989613
At least those slasher movies had some gaps in release time, where as Backrooms, Exit 8, this slop etc are just the same theme.
>woah dude a spooky place that is endless and we can't get out!
Except Kane fucked up the concept by actually having an easy exit, but that's a while other thing.
>>
>>221989584
>that's mega stupid, but what ever
There would actually be a decent film in the idea if the family in the car starts to pass by other abandoned cars on the roadside and starts to figure out their horrible situation when they have to loot said cars for food and shit. Mummified bodies in old derelict cars, endless forest road, something in the woods makes it dangerous to leave car, night time comes, mist, strange noises, trees you can't see the tops of, the feeling of constantly being watched, having to piss, etc.
>>
>>221989584

>>221989675

>>
>>221989759
Yeah but having the story about a place you can't escape that just loops is a lot more specific and not quite as open as there being some random killer. Note as well that all of these new movies are distinctly derivative of Backrooms and are just changing the scenery slightly, to the point where you could just say they're levels of the Backrooms (the forest is also a level in the internet lore btw).

Grug have idea. What if combine Back Rooms concept with Escape Room concept? People go to play but escape room haunted? Grug not smart, Grug go back to hitting rock with wooden stick.
>>
>>221989675
I don't see how having an easy exit made the backrooms worse. Having the whole runtime spent wandering the backrooms while lost wouldn't have worked for something movie length, unless you add in a bunch of lame levels

>uh oh scary monster! oh well, i'll leave through the exit and maybe pickup something in the gift shop on the way out.
The main concept and fear of the Backrooms was you no clip in and can't get out, all while being pursued by something. There are no stakes if you can just walk right out of the situation.

>Yeah but having the story about a place you can't escape that just loops is a lot more specific and not quite as open as there being some random killer.
No it's not. Almost every Jason movie was an enclosed area that people got killed in. If there wasn't a physical block it was just a terrible horror movie trope at the time that people didn't run away when in danger thus all those memes about people running up stairs when chased in a house rather than leaving the front door

I will never understand other millennials who need to have this weird elitism over stuff we grew up with which wasn't even made by us but boomers

Well then it's a good thing that the climax still involves the characters getting lost and chased by an uncanny monster

Looks dull.

Easy bro, I wasn't saying those old movies were better or unique, only that at least there was a bit of a break in-between. Right now it's like studios have decided they need to pump out the exact same movie as much as possible. That still happened back then obviously but at least they were mostly contained to straight-to-DVD releases with low budget charm.

I'm just annoyed that Backrooms is going to set the formula for horror movies for years to come and studios are more than happy to latch onto it for dear life.

I thought it was alright. But either way I think your point of wanting it to be more like the original concept doesn't translate well to film. I enjoyed Kane's first backrooms video but you can't really build an engaging movie if the protagonist spends the whole time stumbling around weird rooms. You'd need to add more entities or events, and at that point it gets dangerously close to the trashy tiktok backrooms

I understand someone trying to make the argument you are making and maybe with certain genres you could make this argument but you chose horror, the most low bro genre entirely designed to make the most money with the least risk. I remember reading an article from someone who worked on the older Friday the 13th movies and he said the studio was embarrassed by those movies but they made money so every time they needed funding for something they actually wanted to make, they shitted out another low budget Jason movie.

>easy bro
That wasn't an insult. I see constant posts here and on /v/ and oter boards with other millennials obsessed with talking down zoomer entertainment being as good as theirs and it's genuinely sad especially since millennials didn't make their movies. Boomers did. Gen Z aren't making most of these. Gen X and boomers are. We get shit on with the "millennial writing" meme but we aren't writing most of that shit. Any lower quality of movies these days isn't zoomers fault but an overall societal slow decline that has been happening since the early 2000's. I will defend zoomers on this. They get too much shit. Like when they get blamed for killing the alcohol industry meanwhile the youngest zoomer is 14 so why the fuck are we doing a 1-1 comparison with them when almost half of them are not legal drinking age?

There's still a lot more that could've been done in that concept. Finding other survivors inside, people from other time periods that just got trapped there (implied to be possible in the YT series) and different levels with different entities, with all of them grouping together to try and figure out a way to escape. Even the Backrooms wiki has some shit like that where survivors grouped together on one level and have a sort of outpost.

>car starts to pass by other abandoned cars on the roadside and starts to figure out their horrible situation when they have to loot said cars
They do
>for food and shit
I can't remember why, but one of them figures out you can't actually eat food either as it doesn't digest or something
>Mummified bodies in old derelict cars
Theres no bodies as you never actually die
>endless forest road
Thats exactly what it is
>something in the woods makes it dangerous to leave car
It's other people that are trapped and they come out of nowhere as soon as you stop
the chinamen makes it to the end and then you can't drive anymore. you have to start walking

The movie felt like to me the start of a universe with many unanswered questions. So I am intrigued. The director said he is doing a show as a sequel and thats it but I suspect when he moved on, A24 will keep pursuing the universe and I hope the director creates a production "bible" for them to follow so it doesn't devolve into "backrooms but in space".

My guess is boomers are blaming them considering they started drinking at very young ages. Adult zoomers also don't really drink desu but that's probably because they've seen what happened to boomers and their beer guts.

I'm a millenialfag too and I think all the gen shit is retarded, I genuinely wasn't even trying to make an argument about old movies being better or something, only that I'm annoyed that now it's going to be a quantity over quality wave of slop that's based off Backrooms (which already feels like it was run into the ground by the time the movie came out).
>>
>burn the forest
>go full Lightning McQueen on the road destroying the asphalt
>>
>>221990140
That shit with the survivor outpost is what I hope Kane avoids. Not that it's completely terrible, but to me the idea of people surviving for extended periods of time within the backrooms, long enough to establish a settlement without going insane kinda goes against the spirit of it. More entities would be cool as long as they're used sparingly and aren't just The Clownlord that smiles at you from the shadows or whatever fnaf bullshit
>>
>>221990214
You are close but no I think there are deeper problems here and maybe people are becoming more health conscious but boomers need a bogeyman to blame to their investors so they can wave away their fuckups as "uncontrollable market conditions" so they don't get fired and that is 100% what they are doing by blaming gen z.
