It's bad like all Hollywood movies, plus Nolan and his host of Hollywood horrors that he has in every movie. Hollywood has never depicted an ancient battle or an ancient set of armour accurately, some have tried but Nolan's Odyssey didn't even bother , they not only did the same old thing of waving their swords around but all their actual weapons were missing. Even the helmets were so terrible, Maring the Martian style crap. I suppose if you know nothing about the weapons they used you would have no idea about the design of the helmet they used and why they would have almost certainly had enclosed face guards, like a classical Corinthian helmet.

The main problem is characterisation. Odysseus' cunning and trickery are his heroic virtues and he never once felt guilty about the Trojan Horse or any other stratagem. The film version of Odysseus has none of his cunning or demonstrates any real problem solving skills; Nolan instead tries to turn Odysseus' journey into another Oppenheimer guilt trip where his virtues are treated like his cardinal sins. This approach falls especially flat because Matt Damon isn't a convincing enough actor to really convey any of Odysseus' craftiness or quick wit, so he just comes off mopey and bored throughout the film, and you don't get any hint of the ingenuity that Homer's text imbues his protagonist with. The nonlinear narrative only serves to provide the illusion of depth to a very generic Nolan action plot grafted onto the faintest trace of Greco-Roman myth, which isn't helped by the characteristically weak dialogue in Nolan movies (Our age of bronze is collapsing, Somebody get these beggars outta here etc.) being especially out place when the actors have such cheap-looking anachronistic outfits. The whole thing feels less like a Nolan film about The Odyssey, and more like an Odyssey film about Nolan.

He is right. She is inserted in the story to play Achilles role. The problem is that it changed the hubris and kleos associated with Odysseus and Achilles in the original epic to reframe it as PSTD, guilty ridden protagonist who has to face the consequences of sacking a city and killing its citizens which is a modern theme and not really the focus of the original story.

What part do you not understand that she exists because Nolan decided the reframe the original themes for his modern ones? She plays the same vital role that Achilles plays in the original epic in regards to Odysseus character, they're both the anchor to Odysseus understanding his flaws and grounding him towards the objective of returning home. They are in essence the same character, just retrofitted to play the story Nolan wants to play instead of keeping it authetic.

Learn to read what I wrote, stupid faggot. I said the character was transposed from Virgil's later additions to the story, by adding a go-between with the Greeks and the Trojans, not replace Achilles who is unimportant to the original story of the Odyssey. Your lack of basic media comprehension further proves you're either ignorant of how adaptation works or are a malcontent looking to spread misinfo. In either case, you should kill yourself.

Glad to know you're the authority in Homer's original work and you feel like Achilles plays zero role in the storyline while works that are devised from it are much more critical for whatever you want to see on the screen. Thankfully, the majority of people who want to see the Odyssey don't agree with you, and are correctly pointing out how Nolan mangled the original work, including the person who worked for years on translating the original story. I don't give a shit about YOUR piss-poor interpretation of Achilles or Sinon in Virgil's works, I care about what I expected to see in a movie adapting Odyssey.

If you gave a shit about a good interpretation of the story, you'd read Fagle's translation that actually embodies the tone and spirit of how the original Homer story would've been orated. The Wilson translation is for students just getting into classic lit studies, but is by no means the definitive version of the tale, nor does the writer's opinion on the film matter all that much since adaptation is a separate art form from literary translation.
>>
>>222113729
It’s not bad, it’s actually really good. It’s not great, though. The third act falls on its face and devolves into a Jason Bourne movie. Dialogue is also frequently stilted throughout the film and characters oscillate back and forth between speaking like modern dudebros and Shakespearean English. The theme of guilt also doesn’t work well for this story, in my opinion. Lastly, there are some casting issues. Basically everyone in the movie except for John Leguizamo is miscast, though Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson do a decent job. It’s a solid 6-7/10 film.

Are you so fucking self-absorbed you don't realize people might not want shit shoehorned from other works, deviations or the director's ethos into the original epic? Just because you liked it and it works for you, don't mean that it's not a valid criticism from people who were expecting to see a faithful adaption of the Odyssey. If I wanted to see Nolan's modern interpretation of the Odyssey with the themes he is trying to portray, I would go read In The Heart of Darkness or watch Apocalypse Now which I felt convey much better the trauma of war with the ethereal world that is depicted in the Odyssey. Emily's beliefs and principles are her's alone and I'm not here to discuss her character. She clearly made her own judgment apart for them, based on own understanding of the source material (which she can then have her own opinion of) and what it felt they should have been translated into the big screen. She is not arguing for the movie including her own set of principles and beliefs, she is arguing against Nolan doing that and straying away from the original epic and she is absolutely correct about that. You're so brainrotted by this cultural warfare, you've been clouded by your lack of objectivity when reading into what other people are saying if they fit in the box you the people you dislike.

I'd be more than happy to hear what Fagle thought about it but unfortunately he is no longer among us, anon. I do think that anyone who has been tasked with translating the original work, putting years of their life into doing their best for it are much more of an authority in the subject that people who simply read the epic at some point in their life and then forgot about it. Those translators are entitled to share their thoughts on it, even if we know that a true faithful adaption is not always possible (and that's fine to a certain degree but when you start tweaking characterization and themes, I disgress, I think you're fucking up the original work and you might as well do your own original thing or at least a modernized reimagination like Romeo & Julieta from 1996).
>>
>>222122136
>Are you so fucking self-absorbed you don't realize people might not want shit shoehorned from other works, deviations or the director's ethos into the original epic?
It's called an adaptation. Adaptations are free to pull from various sources and interpretations of one story if they exist.
>Just because you liked it and it works for you, don't mean that it's not a valid criticism from people who were expecting to see a faithful adaption of the Odyssey
See above
>If I wanted to see Nolan's modern interpretation of the Odyssey with the themes he is trying to portray, I would go read In The Heart of Darkness or watch Apocalypse Now which I felt convey much better the trauma of war with the ethereal world that is depicted in the Odyssey
Nolan wasn't trying to emulate those same themes, he was making a point how the code of honor and hospitality and it's effects on Mycenean society
>Emily's beliefs and principles are her's alone and I'm not here to discuss her character. She clearly made her own judgment apart for them, based on own understanding of the source material (which she can then have her own opinion of) and what it felt they should have been translated into the big screen
Her beliefs and principles led to her writing the female characters as being slaves to the men and that Odysseus depiction was akin to a tyrant. Coloring the original work in a post modern lens only serves to piss off historians and honest book readers alike.
She is not arguing for the movie including her own set of principles and beliefs, she is arguing against Nolan doing that and straying away from the original epic and she is absolutely correct about that
Again, adaptation and translation are different arenas and Nolan never said he was wholly adapting her work but was inspired by it.
>cultural warfare
The only cultural warfare being waged here is by bad actors who come in and act like Nolan put a torch to the classics when he merely provided a modernist take.
>>
>>222122420
>he was making a point how the code of honor and hospitality

>>
>>222122420
But after all you wrote you realize the whole point of this discussion, right? You're fine and satisfied with Nolan's modernist take on this epic tale, and that's okay, it spoke to you about things that you felt were important and transmutated the story and that's a valid opinion. My view of it is the opposite. I didn't want any of these things, I wanted to see an ancient story filmed with modern effects that was rotted in the culture, themes, narrative and characterization of ancient greek times.

To try and see things from your perspective and the flaws I see within it, which is why I can't agree with your modernist take.. I don't care for what Nolan thinks about those set of rules (hospitality, code of honor, mutual respect) because the way he went to portray it lacks the underlying foundation why it's important in the first place - we never see how the war starts (thus we can't assert if Odysseus and his men were in the wrong), we never glimpse at how other setpieces of that civilization interact with one another (and thus see the strength of those estabilished rules versus archaic ones), we're never told why those things were critical for creating a trust system that allowed such a civilization to emerge (thus justifying it as the cardinal sin that collapses the Bronze Age) - we don't even see how these principles are important for the everyday region of the folks who live there. Ultimately, Nolan seems to be speaking more to the audience about the importance of those sets of rules within OUR own civilization, rather than the civilization of the ancient greeks and falls short of doing anything but using the Odyssey to parrot his beliefs and messages.

Cowper's translation is by far the best, most authentic experience an English speaker can have reading Homer. Fagles neuters the virility, the fire and passion of Homers characters. The Iliad or Odyssey between Fagles and Cowper aren't even comparable: it's like reading two different poems.

I kind of liked the movie because I like "sword and sandals" type movies and if you like that genre you are used to seeing much worse. I have seen more epic boat and raid scenes in shows like Vikings or Game of Thrones.

Because the film is at war with itself. It doesn't know if it's an adaptation of the odyssey or some hackneyed modern interpretation. lol

The Bad:
>Supplants Greek writing with modern day Christian, particularly catholic morals.
>Removes all complexity from Odysseus and reduces him to a guilt-ridden mess.
>Not a single other character gets any development.
>Odysseus's entire character arc the movie spent time on building is overwritten at the end as he's turned into John Wick.
>Absolutely dogshit costume work. The Giants and Agamemnon are the worst offenders. Also the trojan horse itself looked really anachronistic.
>The action is very John Wick-y/Steven Segal-y
>Female characters are all one note- victims. None have the capacity for initiative, agency, or doing evil.

The good:
>Actually does feel like an epic
>Sound and music were too notch and very fitting
>Damon does great for the role he was cast in
>It's a good movie despite being inauthentic, simplified, and overly psychiatrized
>>
>>222131357
Don't you dare diss John Wick, boy! The high-octane and grounded choreography that Stahelski and Keanu put so much effort to bring to the big screen puts the Odyssey to shame. If there's one aspect that the series deserves to be acknowledged for is the stellar action scenes.
>>
I actually really enjoyed the movie BUT I gotta be honest im tired of characters (it's usually the men) regretting what they done and being shameful of shit that's cool. it kinda sucks that a big part of the movie is Damonyssus comes to regret his actions and rethink his whole damn world view because of it. If this were made 20 years ago he would be a triumphant Odysseyus and all the heroic shit he does would be seen as good and cool not "actually maybe we were the bad guys all along?". hollywod loves doing that these days especially when it comes to male characters

So no one is willing to explain why this movie is supposed to be good. Figures. None of you troons making this thread have even seen it because you know it's trash and not faggoty enough for you. Come to think of it, that's the best part of this movie. I just answered my own question. No fag stuff.

Besides obvious subversion and destruction of the ideals in the myth I was surprised by just how shoddy and cheap everything looked. It was like 3 beaches two forests and a castle. I can’t believe it cost 250 mil. Things like Lord of the rings and Lawrence of Arabia make this look like a high school film project. The Laestrygonians looked they were wearing Halloween store costumes over under armor spandex. You could see the rubber pieces bending and bouncing around. Nolan also seems to never have been outside (aside from movie making adventures) or completed any physical tasks in his life. He thinks Greeks rowed their boats in armor? That’s retarded. Speaking of retarded…how retarded is it to film the first movie ever fully shot in imax and not even focus the camera? There were medium wide dialog shots fully out of focus for no reason. There were rack focuses back and forth that landed on background extras that weren’t speaking. The circe witch lady dialog and acting with Damon was first time film school acting bad. I can see why the rest of the film is a random mishmash of edits to driving bass notes because when a scene has to make sense Nolan is now totally incompetent as a filmmaker. That he is taken seriously at all is a testament to marketing and brainwashing.

>>
>>222113729
Is it true there are no actual sex scenes between Odysseus and like calypso, circe, etc?
That would make sense, Nolan doesn't want to depict a white man actually getting pussy.

I can't because I don't care enough to either shill or mock this movie. It's really not all that controversial and I don't see why people are pretending to care one way or the other. There are certainly woke movies and they deserve to be ridiculed but this really doesn't seem like one. I think the chuds are pretending to care in the same way that people complain about cultural appropriation, eurocentrism or structural racism which are all largely imaginary.

Nigga the fourth (and some parts of the third) John Wick movie is literally a polished Steven Seagal movie. It's comical how retarded it's action is. The bad guys just come to Keanu one after another in orderly fashion to be killed in the most retardedly simplistic ways possible.

There's no emotional weight to anything. You don't care about a single character in the movie. Nolan's dialogue - like all of his movies - is horrendous. He's a pretty picture maker, but I don't really see how he's much better than Zack Snyder. Any great acting performances in his movies aren't because of him, they're in spite of him. He's extremely overrated because he makes midwits feel smart by getting duped for 2 hours.

>The nonlinear narrative only serves to provide the illusion of depth to a very generic Nolan action plot grafted onto the faintest trace of Greco-Roman myth, which isn't helped by the characteristically weak dialogue in Nolan movies
This. The dialogue and action scenes are some of Nolan's worst.

It was amazing how they fucked up something so simple, given all the emphasis they put on Odysseus' skills with the bow right out the gates.

>a bow only you're strong enough to string
Stringing the bow isn't just about strength, it isn't a normal bow, it was a recurved bow and there is a special technique that you would only know if you were familiar with that kind of bow, which a bunch of snot nosed foppish suitors who have been sitting around his hall for years would know.

So not one out of 100 guys has ever strung a recurve bow before? I highly doubt that. They made it a point that he's the only one who can string that bow so something about it must be special and the only thing that could be special is that it requires a great deal of strength to accomplish. I've strung recurve bows before and matt damon wasn't using correct technique himself.
