I think it depends on the country a bit. In the U.S., at least, it definitely feels that way directly.

In Russia, I would say it was still generally "easier" to get into their best schools as a foreigner than a Russian or CIS student, but it seemed to be more about building international connections and soft power than the raw economics; my computer science program was only ~$3,000 USD per year for tuition, textbooks, etc (~$15 USD a month for the dorm, too), and the Russian government offered full-ride scholarships to anyone who applied and scored in the top ~20% or so regardless of their nationality.

In terms of domestic viewership, it's 2nd best in SBS' Fri/Sat timeslot (which is relatively new) behind Penthouse S2. I don't think anybody really expected it to blow up like it did. It's not like Perfect Crown, where you can clearly see they were aiming to create a mega hit.
But it is pretty inline with other SBS successes in this time slot - Taxi Driver, The Judge from Hell, Fiery Priest. They have the audience for this kind of thing. Plus the source material being a popular webtoon helps drive viewership too. Solid cast, solid production values, a story that was entertaining albeit unrealistic. Very easy to watch and root for the heroes to smack the shit out of some unrepentant bad guys. I'd say the entertainment factor is the key element to many drama blow-ups.

OTT platforms got big into kdrama production. Netflix in particular shits out just as much as a traditional TV network does (or more depending which channels you compare it to). Though their programming is more varied vs Disney+, who have become more thriller oriented in the last few years. I like to think they fill the void OCN left.

What's with all the cope? The subtitles aren't really the main issue (though they definitely don't help). Korean daily conversation runs on a small set of syllables, so a lot of words just end up sounding similar. Add in all the homophony and sound changes that happen in normal speech and a lot of distinctions just disappear. It's genuinely just a hard language to pick up through mostly passive listening and I'd wager most anons here don't know much beyond the usual catchphrases even after watching 100s of kdramas (myself included)

the font size is set during processing, what you see is not what I see, I set them larger because you can actually read them on mobile that way, and whether you like it or that that's how the majority of people access this website. the size did get out of hand when I switched to a new 4K monitor and had to turn on 200% UI scaling, which also scaled the subtitle size up even more and I didn't realize it.
