He's the goyische foil, the goil, so to speak. His character was a deliberate parody of the goyim, designed to highlight the supposed superiority of the Jewish soul.

He's naively earnest, has the "lure of the beast", does not snobbishly set himself above others, has inexplicable luck, compassion for the pigman, etc.
