I used to think he was just an off-brand Gary Cooper, but I've warmed to him after seeing Stars In My Crown recently. I watched The More the Merrier the other day and quite liked him in that too (though Coburn and Arthur were the real stars). Maybe I just didn't like Sullivan's Travels.

Oh, and on the topic of Tourneur, I forgot to mention that I watched this recently and it was kino (Ward Bond was particularly good and gave one of the best performances I've seen from him). Where should I go next with him (to the anon who recommended me King's I'd Climb the Highest Mountain, I've not forgotten, and that's next on my watchlist)? I've already seen Stars In My Crown (obviously), Out of the Past and I Walked With a Zombie.

What do you mean by "really understand" film? That could entail a multitude of different things. I doubt most people here (and I'm not exempt from this) "understand" film.

Anyway, Transcendental Style in Film by Schrader is a classic if you want to get into that particular rabbit hole.

>we were faced with the problem of re-creating the Commune, which was supposed to be packed with thousands and thousands of people. And the money we had could only get us 100 people for one day. So Menzies devised a scheme whereby for that day we put all these people on a platform like a football or baseball field, but straight up so it would be square. And we sat 100 people crowded into this small space, put the camera so they would just fill the frame, and John Alton lit it with some shafts of light at different angles.… I shot all the reactions to all the speeches of Robespierre and Danton and so forth. Then we took it and multiplied it twenty times, projecting it on a rear-projecting machine so that we no longer had 100 people, we had 2000. All we had in the foreground was a big, big door with guards standing on duty. As this door opened, Robespierre walked in and the people rose, the 2000 people against this background. And then for all the speeches we just went into a big close-up of Robespierre against this background of people who were screaming and yelling. We were able to achieve this tremendous effect with only 100 people. And this was conceived completely by Cameron Menzies. With 60 percent of its budget covered by a loan from Bank of America, Reign of Terror was completed at a negative cost of $220,000.

I recently watched Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)
Some pretty insane cinematography for the time and the costumes/set design are pretty interesting. I picked it up because Refn recommended it. I didn't expect it to be so...sexually charged given the main character is an underaged girl. It's not necessarily exploitative as the story revolves around her being preyed on by everyone in her life but it's still kind of strange.

If there is one thing I consider mandatory, it’s to use archival cans. I use the blue Tuscan ones. They help from dust and debris accumulation as well as being vented so air does not get trapped.

However there are some need to know dos and donts

1. Don’t keep your film airtight
2. Keep it in a cool place with ventilation
3. Store films flat, up to five 2000’ reels stacked, never upright.
4. Avoid using garages, sheds, basements as storage as mold and mildew will be easier to accumulate

I keep my prints in my bedroom but open the windows if I take a hot shower so the steam can quickly ventilate out

In any case what you’re really trying to do to preserve is to safeguard the prints from vinegar syndrome and warping. This will destroy the film and once it starts it cannot be undone. This is why sometimes if you see a color film print and it has reddish tones, This is usually from bad preservation.

If you want to go the extra mile you can get a wine cooler and you will be super solid

No, the actual film side of things is not demanding at all once you have the conditions you need, the only challenge in my opinion is dealing with individual projectors.
Buy a projector that is tested and working because if you get a bum one it will tear and slice up your film.
My first projector was a Bell and Howell that destroyed one of my films. But I switched to an Elmo 16-cl and it is a fantastic machine. I would suggest using Elmo’s if you decide to invest in a projector

I'm the only one that can beat the OG Ninja Gaiden trilogy in here, the future of /film/ is in my hands.
>>
>>222155763
Aww but I thought you were "one with the darkness"? Don't tell me a bit of negative emotion intimidates you that much?
>>
>>222156459
Nope, i've done it too.
>>
>>222156459
I have also done it. Catunc has done it also.
>>
>>222156559
But you did it with savestates...
>>
>>222156653
Nope.
>>
>>222156478
I'm just asking a question.
>>
>>222156743
I beat cinema, though.
>>
>>222157001
how many films have you seen?
>>
>>222157022
All of them.
>>
>>222156931
But isn't your gimmick "causing as much pain as possible"? The tiniest bit of hostility upsets you that much? Forgive me Goomba I just didn't realize you were so brittle, so frail.
>>
Film festival in my city starts this week, decided to go to seven films. Should be fun.

Wasn't that many hyped films from the big film festivals earlier this year so I picked at random a bit.

>>
>>222157400
I just don't get why you're permanently angry.
>>
>>222157515
What's even more baffling is your permanent mediocrity and faggotry, they'll find the cure for cancer before they find the reason why you're the way you are.

>>222155120
Yes. Sublime. Thanks for pushing me on that one; may have even enjoyed it more than the mother and the whore
>>
>>222157575
That doesn't even matter to me, I'd rather just be happy.
>>
>>222157703
Which is something you'll never get to experience since you've decided to resign yourself to being the world's biggest faggot.
>>
>>222157761
I guess you're just very unhappy and in pain, I'll let you be, then.
>>
>>222157846
A happy person does not do what you do. In between the wiggerdom, the posturing, the half-assed attempts at being verbose, the countless incorrect usages of semicolons, the distinctly latino effeminancy that has a touch of defiance to it, just enough to be completely insufferable, the ineffectual ragebait, the extremely transparent borderline personality disorder on display, the pathetic self-loathing, happiness for such a cretinous, loathsome little spic rat such as yourself is perhaps the pipe dream that is the most unattainable because everything you do and say is centered around the fact that no one will miss you when you die, so your life is centered around this daily exercise of self harm because it's the only thing that makes you feel alive. I do think it's pointless to tell you to kill yourself because in a way, you already have.
>>
>>222157934
Holy trvke.
>>
>>222157934
I never said I was happy, but I do feel pity for you, as you choose to be unhappy all of the time by indulging in this passion for hatred you have ingrained so deeply in you.
>>
>>222158029
And you never will be happy, you never will be content because this is your sole source of nourishment. One moment you're one with the darkness, the next you're a sadist who is just tickled pink by the idea of "causing suffering" and then you whine and cry like the worthless little fucking spic rodent that you are about "brute force bullying". Then it comes the manlet taunts, ineffectual. Impotent your mom jokes, ineffectual. The entire general has you cornered like a cat hunting its most troublesome rodent adversary and the killing blow is when we finally rid of you, which everyone is optimistic about because we know how it ends with "people" such as yourself. Shouldn't hatred, animosity and conflict be the very intangibles that make life worth living for you? Don't you always say "I exist to cause pain and suffering"? Why change your tune? Why not do the wigger routine in a moment like this, doesn't everything roll off your disgusting, greasy brown spine?
>>
>>222158123
You have memorized more stuff about me than I do myself, and that is sad. You also take all of this shit super seriously.
>>
>>222158184
LH just annihilated you
>>
>>222158235
I guess.
>>
>>222158266
Go on, pain and suffering. Chop chop. Let's see that evil, let's venture into that abyss, El Goomba. It'll be fun, go on and showcase that sadism.
>>
>>222158323
OK.
>>
>>222158354
Come on, nigga. Inflict that pain, make us squirm, let's build that hellscape, nigga.

there's a shaggy dog story tier documentary called Le temps des amoureuses in which the director tries to track down the actors from that film 30 years later, doesn't really get much insight from the few he finds, fails to convince the girl on the poster to appear, and progressively lets the doc get hijacked by one dude who's a bit of an arrested development case eager to talk about his childhood memories and present ambitions of being a musician.
I had to keep this image of him approaching the last surviving cinema in Narbonne.

Favourite French /film/ of the 21st century?
I greatly enjoyed the films of Yann Gozlan, particularly Black Box. One of the few frogs that isnt ashamed of genre filmmaking.

Magellan was fine but it was a weak effort by Diaz standards. He had sex with Albert Serra and hired his cinematographer and just made a Serra type movie.
