>>222153305I'm pretty sure they explicitly call it a science vessel in the show. Long Range Science Vessel. They didn't seem to have any issues fabricating any equipment they needed on board, airoponics, astrometrics, the delta flyer, whatever changes the cochran shuttle needed to hit warp 10...It does kinda feel like it lacked permanent science stations early on in the series though.

Just realized that DS9 and VOY were on TV at the same time. How did that work?
>>222153735VOY was UPN's flagship show while DS9 was first run syndication like TNG.

>>222153765>VOY was UPN's flagship show while DS9 was first run syndication like TNGI dont get it
>>222153809That was strange. The whales get dumped into the almost sterile ocean with hardly a 100 species alive. Welcome back, whalebros
>>222153809She'd be the only qualified expert on whales. Not a bad job market
>>222153735Wait until you find out TNG and DS9 were on TV at the same time.
>>222153809syndication died as cable peaked
>>222153870Earth's oceans obviously recovered from whatever, long before then. I think there were other whale species that were doing just fine, too. It was just specifically the Humpbacks that were extinct.
>>222153866Paramount sold the rights of TNG and DS9 to every county's local affiliates. The local affiliates then sold adspace to advertisers. There are thousands of local affiliates so the shows were instantly profitable. That's also why they ordered 26 episodes a year. More episodes means more adspace means more money. It was a win/win/win.But UPN was a regular network so it had no affiliates. VOY was able to sell UPN but no Trek show sold Paramount+
>>222153866UPN didn't exist yet. But the financial success of TNG did probably contribute a fair bit to them deciding they could have their own network, hence VOY as the flagship on that new network.
>>222153618I have nothing against him and I'm glad you don't have a death note. You seem unstable.
>>222153735It was great in the mid 90's in the UK every thursday i think on BBC 2 you'd get a simpsons episode followed by an episode of tng/voyager and then a buffy episode.
>>222153618Jack Quaid needs to break out of the Hughie/Boimler pigeonhole because he can't play that character forever. Similar to how Will Farrell's career died because he could only play Ron Burgandy characters.
>>222136021[regarding VIII: First Contact] The story is awful, Data is so fucking campy, Picard is acting out of character at times (he’s also done dirty by some weird editing. There are scenes where it feels like they left footage rolling for a few seconds before/after Patrick Stewart was acting)I wrote down notes as I was watching and I have>cornywritten over and over again lol.I liked that Dr. Z was an alcoholic. And I liked the beginning when Worf was commanding his own ship and he’s just like yeah fuck it prepare for ramming speed, perhaps today is a good day to die. The black chick, I don’t remember her name but she’s the helper to Zefram Cochrane, was a pretty good actress actually. Although they gave her too many>erm, we’re not in Kansas anymore Toto!lines. It’s not good. I’ll be watching Generations next I suppose
>>222154435>Picard is acting out of characterThis was only the start. They gave Stuart way too much power, he was even allowed to insert his anti-wife beater campaign for some reason. While TOS movie Kirk aged like fine wine, TNG movie Picard hurts to watch.
>>222154540Doesn't have to be a protection thing. Maybe some Bajoran caveman just thought they were cute.
>>222153809There are probably 50,000 planets in the Federation starcharts that are inhabited by some kind of whale adjacent creatures. Also, since Cetacean Ops is canon, there must have been a ton of biologists who were familiar with belugas and dolphins.
>>222154410i don't watch nutrek so I don't know what type of character that is but I'm going to take a wild guess that it's some kind of annoying little faggot, which is exactly what he was on The Boys too. he doesn't need to do anything because he's a nepo baby who can suck and nobody gives a fuck and will still hand him millions of dollars for existing.
>>222153618he plays the same nebbish little homo in every role
>>222154623Yeah Boimler was the same “Skittish, run around hyperventilating” character as Hughie. It was really funny seeing /v/ melt down at the God of War trailer where he voices *checks notes* a nonbinary cube.
>>222154410Hughie is mirror universe boimler
>>222153866don't be retarded
i hate how people use the "non-binary" now instead of androgynous. zoomers are so fucking retarded and they love to re-invent things that already exist but making it way stupider because they're all actually illiterate. they've never read books and learned that things exist outside of what you see on a tiktok feed.
There isn't a really a bad VOY episode. There may be some weaker ones, but none is down right shit like on Enterprise or DS9

>>222155323it’s, ironically, the best of the worst. Or the worst of the best. Kinda teeters the line. It has the distinction of being real trek by technicality, and having a mountain of dogshit after it that makes it look better with hindsight.
>>222155323It's good outside of the hamfisted 9/11 analogy and the temporal cold war stuff. Basically they should've made it purely episodic until the great season 4 arcs.

>>222155844I don't really understand why they chose the slutty go-go dancer look for the female uniform. In the original unaired pilot, Roddenberry envisioned a unisex militaristic uniform design that worked quite well. I can only imagine how pissed he must have been when the execs told him to spicen things up. But still, what's the thought process behind that look. Sure, panthyhose were taking off in the late 1970, replacing 500 years of cumbersome stockings. Sexual revolution made skirts shorter and all, but how could they assume that morals would change so drastically to a point where members of the military would look like 60s hippies?

>>222158319its a good old fashioned clipshow. they are lame but this one is better than most. that head spike machine is pretty iconic
>>222157353Season 4 is probably the season where they actually were managing to avoid making bad episodes. But the show was much more interesting in the first two seasons than really anything that followed. The characters just get blander and blander. Anything interesting about them gets forgotten.Anyway, I still like VOY but it's kinda crap even though it had occasional moments of true brilliance all the way to the end to make the mediocrity palatable the rest of the time.

Changelings and Xindi-Reptilians are more sympathetic than the Maquis>Waah! I've been on this planet for 8 months and I have to move to any one of a million idyllic, perfectly terraformed planets without lifting a finger while my entire home and all my possessions can be effortlessly transported or recreated in every detail where I can then resume my utopian life with all my needs fulfilled while I play vidya and jerk off in the holodeck all day? Well, fuck you! >>222158694i think ds9 sucks but its all debatable except 7. season 7 is trash. 6 seasons of buildup to close out every arc in one ep with ezri and vic filler inbetween.
>>222158714It's kinda funny that the studio forced the addition of the Maquis into TNG and DS9 in order to set up VOY, and then VOY didn't even bother using the Maquis so only TNG and DS9 had good episodes related to them and it actually affected things.

>>222156967I always wondered what would’ve happened if they had VOY as the syndicated show and DS9 was the anchor for UPN.
>I want to make absolutely sure that you understand the implications of this agreement. By giving up your status as Federation citizens, any future request you or your people make to Starfleet will go unanswered. You will be on your own and under Cardassian jurisdiction.
>>222159497I actually think that's the part that was photoshopped. I saved it on /v/ but I saved it because of the Seven stuff in the background which is real
>>222159807It would have been the worst of both worlds, honestly. If DS9 is the anchor for UPN, then it would definitely have to be episodic, which would mean we'd lose on that sweet sweet slow-burn format and long-term storytelling, and its edge would then be sanded down so as not to offend anybody.VOY is still fucked regardless, the premise is more harm than good because its not built for long term shit.
>>222159989You don’t think that DS9 having a stable home on one network at one time wouldn’t have helped its ratings and VOY just largely being episodic wouldn’t have been helped by being aired whenever and wherever for people to find?
>>222159857And because Starfleet officers are always going rogue and doing whatever they feel is morally justified to themselves at the time, anyone with an ounce of intelligence knew they'd get unlimited military support covertly to keep their homes and remain independent of Cardassian rule, ultimately dragging the Federation back into war with Cardassia, which everyone would expect the Federation to easily win. The first war was nothing more than a little skirmish to the Federation while it was a very big deal to the smaller, weaker, less technological Cardassians.>>222160049No. Better ratings is not something DS9 needed. DS9 needed the execs to leave them the fuck alone and let them do whatever they wanted with their show. Which is why DS9 turned out great, and VOY was constantly being micromanaged and focus grouped and was generally a bland, mediocre product that occasionally managed to be great.
>>222160049On the one hand, DS9 is, on paper, the perfect show to headline a network; on the other, it just wouldn't be the same, because there is no doubt that Paramount/UPN would drastically change it to get the most out of it. I think DS9 loses more in the long run by being UPN's anchor. That being said, VOY was built for syndication. It should have been the syndicated show, but they really fucked up.
>>222160184They both should've been first run syndication.
Part of the reality is they knew a lot of Trekkies at the time were turned off by DS9 so VOY was made to be TNG-lite to get a lot of the TNG-onlies back on board
>>222160272I'll never really understand that. But then I also saw Stargate fans reject their own version of DS9 and kill off their whole franchise because they didn't have an alternative to support.
>>222160272VOY was the sacrificial lamb. Because it was seen as the course correction by Berman and the suits, it had all their attention, which meant that DS9 could do what it wanted so DS9 had the last laugh in the end.
>>222160334Stargate Atlantis just wasn't as good as SG-1.>>222160272I've read a lot of the old magazines like the official Star Trek one, Starlog, other sci-fi mags, and the most common sentiment during DS9's first few seasons was it was "boring" because "[they] never went anywhere"
>>222160334Star Trek at its core is expected to be optimistic in nature. DS9 is notably more morally grey, and at times out right war crimes are committed by Federation officers. Naturally this would turn off Roddenberry purists, but they're pussies who don't know a good thing when they see it.
>>222160394berman produced 600 episodes of star trek. it was a massive success by any measure.

>the creator of the show was wrong and I'm glad he's no longer involved! Why are people like this?
>>222160723I know Gene's up there in atheist heaven, tearing his hair out over DS9... but come on dude, Season 1/2 of TNG were ass.
>>222156511This gene was such a horndog he probably wanted the men to wear the short skirt too
i wish shatner was the star of generations with the tng crew supporting
>>222160845No one is like this. It is an objective fact though that DS9 was a direct contradiction to Gene's commandments on how Trek should be made.>Crew cannot fight among themselves>Things need to be resolved in 1 episode>Avoid religious discussions>Humanity is evolved and beyond notions of racism, hatred, and bigotry
>>222160907TNG did all of these even during the Roddenberry seasons.People just love repeating things that aren't entirely true.
>>222160953Name episodes in the Roddenberry seasons where these happened.
I often have daydreams about alternative timelines where Troi died instead of Tasha Yar because the premise of Troi is so dumb. She's basically a new-age mood detector which makes her stick out in a show that demands you take it seriously.
>>222161064It just would have been Tasha fucking random men, and women, every other week to make Data jealous.
>>222161110Gimme that over>"Captain... I sense anger."
I think TNG fans ruined the 90s especially the "it's only good after season 3" types
>>222160613Gene Roddenberry’s ghost willed it into the script
>>222160691Why, because it has more serious themes?
>>222161110At least every time worf got his ass kicked (unfortunately often, but it’s what the scripts called for) it would instead be denise crosby getting ragdolled around constantly
>>222161110Berman would never let it happen, Roddenberry wanted gay characters, but was stopped by his own death.
>>222161710Because it pushes Trek to its limits.
things retards love to repeat>tos was cheap>gene roddenberry was wrong>tng seasons 1-2 are bad>ds9 is good only because it's subversive>ent should have done x/y/z>lower decks is a love letter>picard season 3 is good
I literally have never watched anything Trek after VOY lol
>>222161064Imagine an alternate timeline in DS9 where they chose a TNG character to include other than Worf.
>>222162679We'd just get Troi or Wesley on DS9 then.
>>222162868>we’ll never see if Wesley can last a week in a Bajoran death camp
Yay my favorite MILF is back! Why wasn't she in season 2?

>>222162546>you know Garak, that murderous super spy?>he's gay because he touched bashir on the shoulders in their first meeting to make him uncomfortable, so he would be easier to manipulate>sure, he was shown to have a loving romantic relationship with a cardassian woman that was perfectly heterosexual but... uh, he's gay because the actor said so in his biography! One of the ultimate pleb opinions in Trekdom
>Mike from RLMhas some of the most basic bitch normie opinions on star trek as well
>>222163638Well he agrees with you fags on this
>>222163550This also really only started gaining traction after tumblr and Obama era SJWism was on the riseI swear only the most fringe fujoshis said Garak was gay prior to 2010

>>222155323it was canceled for a reason honestly they went too far from the trek formula. no likable characters, dopey captain.

>>222162868Troi would have been fun because it would have made DS9 even more of a Babylon 5 ripoff. All the Klingon stuff that was brought in by Worf would have been replaced with Betazed telepathy being key to winning the Dominion War.

I drive.
>>222154854Alright, I’ll engage.Out of the classic trek shows (80/90s ones), I would say that DS9 is the most consistent one. If you think about truly terrible episodes, only the Allamarain episode comes to mind immediately. On TNG, there’s basically all of Season 1 and half of Season 2 that’s downright atrocious, with only a few silver lining episodes.VOY doesn’t have such a quality issue as TNG, but that is because the average quality is much lower. The best VOY episodes are in line with an above-average TNG or DS9 episode. But it is also the show that wasted the most of its potential. TNG was a (wonderful) rehash of TOS’ formula. DS9 did something different and explored that new setup mostly (except for the Klingons IMO). VOY tried to put a new spin on TNG’s / TOS’ formula, but instead just put sprinkles on it and it meandered around for 7 years. Bad character writing (Chakotay, Kim) added to this disappointment.
>>222155168As long as Kurtzman is attached, it will all be watered down to dreck. You can see glimpses of Trek’s former greatness in SNW, but Kurtzman’s spunk is all over it anyway.

>>222158386Eh, I’ve been spoiled by shows doing much better clipshow episodes. SG-1 did it way better. And Community gets extra mention for fucking with the concept of a clipshow entirely.
Beefers, her shitposting anew!
>>222160334>>222160399IMO, Atlantis was even better than SG-1 because they knew where to use CGI and where not to. But fair enough, David Hewlett singlehandedly carried that entire show.I’m still pissed people didn’t keep watching Universe. It was finally something new in the Stargate universe, and people had been screaming for something “fresher” after >10 seasons of SG. And then they didn’t watch it.
