And literally all the culture war bullshit that I heard about it up until watching it was wrong

>Travis Scott raps in the film
At no point is there modern rap music, there are two 20 second scenes where poetry is recited slightly aggresively.
>They cast Elliot Page as Achilles.
Not only is Elliot cast as Sinon, a literal small young teenager, Achilles is not mentioned a single time in the film
>They replaced the cyclops with those dudes in iron armor, they're not even respecting the source material!
Nope, the cycops is one of the first parts of the film and arguably its best section

Yeah Helen in Troy is hotter and the line about the bronze age collapsing is cliché but besides those things it was a pretty good movie, overall a 7/10

Yeah, because they merged him with Sinon. It's Achilles that speaks to Odysseus in hades, so that rumor wasn't completely incorrect.
>They replaced the cyclops with those dudes in iron armor, they're not even respecting the source material
Now you're merging complaints lol. People made issues of the cyclops and armor looking like shit, and the way Odysseus and gang just sneak past the cyclops instead of strapping themselves to sheep, but I don't recall anyone thinking that one was replaced with the other.

The cyclops was fucking gross desu
>>
I just saw it aswell minutes ago for fairness sake, sparkling and REALLY loud pile of hollywood slopshit
Good: Polyphemus looked great, circes pig transformation was amazing (and gross), skylla was also great, Nolan played his role as the villain well
Bad: everything else. talking slow with deep voices doesn't make the dialogue better, movie often makes no sense and has very weird design ideas, costume department should be held trial not only for the batman-agamemnon but overall lack of direction (why is his son wearing shirts). A lot of retarded things in the writing that made no sense but were there for dramas sake (building the wooden horse in the water, oh no some ppl inside drown, no shit sherlock) and why the fuck do some strangers all of a sudden speak greek and odysseus men translate it to him? They are all greek! Whats the fucking point?

Dont watch it if you dislike hollywood slop or like the original story. I wonder though if people can follow the narrative if they dont know the original, because the entire plot is told from the ending back.
I thought some scenes shown in the online hatetrain were generate by AI to spite the movie but they were all in the movie

>Asian guy suicides himself for some nymphussy

>Clytemnestra put to death off screen by Agamemnon's son
>Only Black suitor is the first to die, in a comical fashion, where Odysseus shoots him through the neck mid sentence

Sinon is not called the greatest warrior ever. Odysseus calls him brave because he feels guilty getting him killed to sell the ruse of the Trojan horse

Odysseus is never portrayed as anything but competent and intelligent. You’re just lying about this.

Has no lines and gets himself killed by the Sirens in the only scene that gives him any focus

Ellen Page specifically plays the role meant for Achilles in the afterlife, saying she's a different character is irrelevant if she ends up acting out the same lines that are Achilles from the source material, thus she's meant to portray Achilles, which in itself is an extreme subversion and demoralization of a foundational western piece of ancient media and storytelling, all because you want to legitimize the transsexual mentally ill castration cult and further humiliate western men

I liked it and here's why
Nolan unintentionally made an incredibly chud-coded film
on the surface it appears to be fairly modern progressive in its outlook and its metaphor. The film chooses to portray the bronze age collapse as a consequence of "breaking zeus' law" aka everyone breaking down all the norms of civilisation and this leading to a domino effect which destroys it.

Ostensibly, this seems to be Nolan saying that in the present day, the visible collapse and decline of western societies and politics is similarly due to a breaking of norms, which I think nolan blames on modern political divisions and specifically trump-style populist rhetoric. but nolan is only half right. he is correct that western societies are deeply threatened by collapse and decay and that this is due to the breakdown of civil norms, but what he doesn't realise is that the destruction of those norms isn't occurring right now, it occurred decades ago during the latter half of the 20th century as a suicidal form of social atomisation and social progressivism began to take root in the core of western societies. that rot is the cause of much of what we see wrong with society today. nolan accurately diagnoses both the problem at hand and the mechanism causing that problem, but misattributes it to recent politics because he is, ultimately, a massive fucking midwit.

the good news is that this turns the odyssey into an accidental masterpiece for me, because I am able to fully engage with it as representing a direct, pointed critique of western societal decay (not to mention the fact it reinterprets the odyssey through a christian moral lens which is actually not a bad idea at all as far as reinterpretations go)

in other words nolan tries to espouse a liberal-progressive message but using fundamentally reactionary logic, which then leads to the movie actually representing a deeply reactionary stance if you're willing to see it that way, and I love it for that
>>
>>222307037
I'd also add this retroactively fixes issues I had like the casting and the americanised dialogue, because the film isn't actually about ancient greece, it's about us, and so it actually plays well into the idea that this movie is just as much about the bronze age greeks as it is about us

also nolan despite being a midwit is still a very competent filmmaker/showman, and so despite many many deeply retarded things being included the movie still comes across as a real spectacle. the soundtrack and some of the more horror-themed scenes stand out to me in particular.
>>
>>222307037
>>222307106
I wish I thought Nolan intended this but I highly doubt it, he's too much of a midwit imo. but who knows

>>
>>222302559
For real, no one is complaining about this but it's part of why the production design of the movie is so bad. The palace at Ithica looks like they found a historical ruin and decided to squat there, with crumbling frescos that look centuries old. Yeah i know MUH AGE OF BRONZE COLLAPSING but it looks ridiculous and cheapens the idea of Odysseus having anything worth returning to, PTSD or no
>>
>>222307037
And that's not even mentioning how much stress they put on "these uninvited guests aren't honoring the social contract". if this movie were identical but made by Mel Gibson, people would call it overt anti-immigrant propaganda. I'm not even a conservative but as I was watching the movie I kept thinking how chuddy this ostensibly woke movie was
>>
>>222307843
>cheapens the idea of Odysseus having anything worth returning to, PTSD or no
That was the idea. Odysseus didn't want to return home because home was destroyed. The breakdown of the world once Zeus' Law no longer applied meant there was no place to escape to (apart from spending your days with Calypso eating lotos). Everything was ruined.
>>
>>222307965
>I'm not even a conservative but as I was watching the movie I kept thinking how chuddy this ostensibly woke movie was

>treat each other with respect, the respectful guest will be welcomed by a generous host
Maybe left and right agree on more than you think. Maybe the divisions between us are being exploited by the guys getting rich off people fighting each other.
>>
Plot twist

Nolan is in a hostage situation (humiliation ritual)

The best he could do it insert the DEI cast in the first minutes of the movie to net the Academy Awards' accolades and later remove these scenes in the director's cut
>>
>>222307980
Yes I understand the theming of the movie but Ithica being a shithole did nothing for it. The idea that Odysseus is traumatized and disillusioned is meant to be personal, and also something that's properly revealed at the end of the movie. It would actually hit harder if Ithica were presented as halfway livable. Then you might have a "look at what he's lost" emotional reaction and not "yeah no shit he didn't want to get back to his stupid ruin"
>>

I think it did. If everything was still polished and nice, then Odysseus would be just another traumatized war veteran returning to a home that moved on without him. By making the whole world crumble, it drives home what a terrible mistake he made and why he feels so guilty.

Yeah, but that's no loss because Odyssey fans like Spider-Man as much as chuds hate Spider-Man.

>Haha! I bet you enjoyed that glass of fine wine! Well, what if I were to get you a SECOND glass of even finer wine! Hahahahaha! Aren't you upset? Wait...no, you weren't supposed to drink that! It was expensive! Mom's gonna freak!

I pirated this earlier today because there is no way I will give my hard-earned money to a coward who bent the knee to Oscars DEI nonsense.

Everything in the film is good except for the DEI shit. The DEI casting takes you out of the movie at every turn where it occurs, which is throughout the film. The "Greek" crew of Odysseus has black and Indian people in it. The suitors have Asians and blacks among them. The people of Troy are diverse. Agamemnon and Menelaus have twin black wives. It's retarded and jarring. But if you can do your best to ignore that shit and try to get immersed... it's okay. The scenes you've heard that are the best in the film are indeed the best. The actual story is not bad either, with Odysseus trying to get home, his son trying to hold shit together back home and Penelope struggling to keep hope alive. It's not great though. And some of the dialog is TERRIBLE. Like B-movie tier shit. Almost exclusively every actor is giving a bad performance. Maybe Pattinson is okay but since NOBODY tries to speak like somebody from 4000 years ago, it's again distracting.

Somewhere within this film is a masterpiece, but it's obscured by DEI crap and a lousy script. Damon, while the way he speaks is not authentic, gives a good performance and I did not think "this is just Matt Damon being Matt Damon" while watching. I also did not think he did Odysseus any justice as a character.

Ultimately, this should not have been an Odyssey film - Nolan should have just made some generic fantasy slop where a guy tries to get back home after some great adventure. If this had no connection to that Greek epic, it would have come across better because at least you can create a world that is just diverse for no reason. Fine, whatever. But this is based off of Bronze Age Greece and it's an adaptation of a story with an established setting, characters, etc. It does no justice to the source material.

I'd still rate it 6.5/10. It is good. It is not great.

Why was there NO RAPE in the Sack of Troy? 10 years of jerking off on a beach and you're telling me they just kill the women and not rape them?

Sinon isn't in the Odyssey, he's in the Aeneid.

OK poopjeet... you're two weeks late and you made a bunch of shit up for your strawman criticisms.
>They replaced the cyclops with those dudes in iron armor, they're not even respecting the source material!
No one has ever claimed this, faggot. This is probably a jeet bot, not even a real Anon. One semi interesting scene with the cyclops doesn't make up for the rest of the movie being boring trash.

>Achilles is not mentioned a single time in the film
Seriously? The scene with Achilles' ghost is one of the best parts of the book. They cut that?
>>
>>222302532
>Not only is Elliot cast as Sinon, a literal small young teenager, Achilles is not mentioned a single time in the film
I also couldn't help but notice the only thing she does in the film is die miserable in the very first scene and then cry like a baby in hades about it

This would be more believable if every other recent movie set in ancient times didnt just film in old ruins instead of building sets because its cheaper and easier

Literally every actor in this movie is miscast. It's actually impressive how bad it is.
