While white people were less invested and were fully susceptible to the obvious mounting evidence that he clearly did it, and the gulf between the two groups got larger and more radicalised the longer it went on. The people who thought he was guilty couldn't fathom the people who thought he was innocent. The people who thought he was innocent at best were completely oblivious to how biased their thinking had become due to the wider context and that their brains were completely mishandling the mounting evidence, and at worst they knew he was guilty but felt that on a utilitarian level the world and society would be worse if he was found guilty.

I'm shocked that experienced counsel would even attempt a stunt like that, especially in a trial as public as that one.
