My understanding is that the project started out as a more explicit criticism of scientology but they softened things when the scientologists did their usual thing and threatened to sue. I haven't watched South Park in years but I did in the early days and I knew that there was an obvious tension with the scientology of actor Isaac Hayes. I was pleased when they courageously threw him under the bus once they got powerful enough.
