So basically just an amerigolem soldier coming back from Iraq after have killed 500000 kids?
>>
>>222319573
It felt like a movie written by a Christian who seriously hated Paganism. Odysseus even calls the Gods "your Gods" to his men, as if he was some kind of atheist.
>>
>>222319573
Homer's Odysseus is a war criminal, too, it's just that he didn't care, sort of like an IDF soldier.
>>
>story is adapted to make a statement on modern themes
Whoa
>>
>>222319573
Yes
>>
>>222319573
He doesn't want the world to see him. Because he doesn't think that they'd understand. When everything's made to be broken, he doesn't want you to know who he am.
>>
>>222320164
>let's adapt a multi-thousand year old story
>but strip and change everything to force the story into a modern mold
Why not just craft an original story then? Oh yeah, because they're hacks that can't write anything original and need to piggyback off something more interesting to sell tickets and generate revenue.

Still mad serb bro?
>>
>>222319573
*sigh*
No retard. Homer's Odysseus actually does have regret and PTSD over his actions. He literally starts crying like a child when a bard sings the tale of the trojan horse.
>>
>Christopher Nolan
>director
>Tells stories he wants to tell
>world take it as gospel

What the fuck is wrong you /tv/

Bro makes movies. It's just a movie, just like anything else.
It only means as much as it means to you.

Literally no one cares as much about this movie than you.

And you've probably never even watched it.

You guys are fucking weird. I hope you know that.
>>
>>222321604
>you guys are weird
Feel to free to fuck off to twitter or rebbit then, never understood why tourists announce themselves like this
>>
>>222320164
that's not enough, the change in story must make a bigger point, so in this case, what is it? What does changing Odysseus show us?
The answer is nothing. This is similar to "In The Name of the Rose" where they insert a modern man into a medieval setting to make a detective story, and in doing so, invalidate the entire story.
>>
Agree, but I also consider this "Christopher Nolan's Odyssey" that was created to connect to modern audiences. Modern audiences don't exactly condone the sacking of cities.
>>
>>222321486
Tears of joy. He only showed regret for getting all his men killed due to his arrogance.
>>
>>222321705
A modern, accurate version of the Odyssey would be extremely unpalatable. Him fucking Circe for a year for fun, the “I’m Nobody” line, executing all the slave girls. Odysseus reads as a complete asshole to modern audiences, even though people at the time would have thought he was awesome.
>>
>>222321705

Modern audiences are also willfully ignorant of how things work. Nothing begets nothing. Nolan doesn't know what he's working with or doesn't respect it, sadly.

The Odyssey comes from an oral tradition, hundreds of different aoidoi probably tweaked it to suit their own perspectives and agendas (or those of their patrons) before Homer's version got recorded for the ages. And Homer's telling probably tells us a lot more about late Dark Ages/early Archaic Greece than about the Mycenaean times its set in. So how's this any different?

Tbh its actually more likely than most films to still be occasionally talked about in 3000 years by virtue of the fact its an adaption of Homer. Even if all films ever made are lost media, if civilization itself survives there's a good chance the Odyssey will survive and still be studied. And it may occasionally get mentioned in passing that there was a major cinematic adaption of it in 2026. It will still have a clear reference point, unlike most movies. They might be aware that a film called Star Wars came out in 1977 and spawned a load of sequels, but know nothing else about it.

>It felt like a movie written by a Christian who seriously hated Paganism
He doesn't seem to be too fond of religion in general, based on this exchange in a recent interview. He does make an accurate observation about the average midwit taking scientific facts as baseline truth, just as people used to with religious dogma. But he then admits that he himself is completely clueless by calling basic science "unknowable." And yet he still thinks he is above the plebs by recognizing this "fact." This isn't the first time he's outed himself as not that bright. Hell, he might even be a closet flat Earther based on this exchange.

Ironically, the Greeks not long after Homer's time had begun deducing that the Earth is round via observation and geometry circa the 6th century. The Earth's circumference was calculated with 99% accuracy by 240 BC. And heliocentrism was proposed in 270 BC. Nolan's confident midwittery is extra grating to me given that what he considers "unknowable" was figured out by the same people he thinks are simpletons for their culture's religiosity.

idk about the Kirk Douglas one but Assante's Odyssey was made by Hallmark, albeit kino. They can't go too overboard with violence against w*men. But there is a scene where he "accidentally" impales a servant girl while hitting one of the suitors, and it's suggestive enough to imply that maybe the two were lovers.
