Dreary movie. Dreary visuals, dreary score, dreary writing. Like everything Nolan does, it takes itself way too fucking seriously. A few good scenes here and there, but in general, it's well-produced mediocrity.

This 100%. He takes a grand adventure full of magic and smashes it down into a dour PTSD war drama. The audio bombards you the entire movie. By the end of it all, our hero is never heroic and regrets the fall of Troy. Everyone else dies.

No they didn't, Achilles is a huge part of the Iliad and not the Odyssey. Iirc Sinon is never in the Odyssey, but he is in Virgil's Aenid that Nolan clearly drew inspiration from in his own adaptation, and Sinon's role is similar where Odysseus is portrayed as wrong and immoral, particularly when it comes to what he made Sinon do and the trickery involved in it.

also I always read Odysseus as somewhat of a bumbling character despite him being highly intelligent/devious. The Odyssey is the archetype in the western literary tradition of the story where the hero stumbles into one misadventure after another.

It was OK

I didn't like how everything has to be shot with dim lighting, too many blacks and browns (color wise, not people you racist).. everything is grim and depressing looking. Greece is a beautiful country and these islands are spectacular, not everything has to be grimdark 100% of the time. It felt one-note in that regard.

It felt like a dumbed down version of the Odyssey told for Americans in the form of a superhero movie, which is what it was. I didn't much like the moral of the story, it felt like some injection of America's post-iraq hangups.

It was entertaining though, I'm glad I went down to the kinoplex to watch it.

It's funny. I agree with you on all points, except I think it was more like his depressing war movies like dunkirk and oppenheimer than capeshit.

But I really wanted bright, over the top 70 mm Epic shit, so I rated it way, WAY lower than you.

The Cyclop looks surprisingly good in the film, unlike oppenheimer where the practical "nuke" explosion was ass.

Nolan is a technician not a director.
