Where did it all go wrong with Wes Anderson? He was /ourguy/ for a long time. Then around 2009 / 2010 (although starting with the Life Aquatic) he completely started becoming a self-fart-sniffing French cinema-obsessed pseud. His movies are basically unwatchable now. Why do filmmakers do this?
>>222324669Tenenbaums was already heavily nouvelle vague-influenced and it is a fantastic movieI don't think he's lost the plot, his films still offer something you can't find anywhere else, sophisticated, ironic yet still zany comedies
it was never a life aquatic problem, thats his magnum opus. he got hollywooded and just makes movies to work with untalented famous people now.
>>222324669He’s like Burton where he keeps making the same movie over and over again and has become so stylized he’s become a parody of himself
>>222324723Royal Tenenbaums reached terminal velocity with the French new wave influence, but it still had heart. Grand Budapest Hotel, by contrast, had zero heart.
>>222324773This is true
>a solid startBottle Rocket Rushmore >the peakThe Royal Tenenbaums The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou >still goodThe Darjeeling LimitedFantastic Mr. Fox>still okayMoonrise Kingdom The Grand Budapest Hotel>still watchableIsle of DogsThe French Dispatch >self parody mode locked inAsteroid City The Phoenician Scheme
>>222324973Rushmore and Bottle Rocket are better than Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic though.
>>222324973grand budapest was solidly worse than phoenician scheme at least. moonrise kingdom was basically awful whenever the kids werent on screen.
>>222324669I can't even accuse people of enjoying the films of Wes Anderson anymore.
>>222325649It was fun times
He has only gotten better with each film. He can finally create animated comics using real life sets and actors. I think he is as funny and soulful as ever.
>co-written with Roman Coppola>The Darjeeling Limited, The French Dispatch, Moonrise Kingdom, The French Dispatch, Asteroid City>written only by Wes>The Grand Budapest Hotel>co-written with Baumbach>The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou>co-written with Owen Wilson>The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, Bottle RocketClearly he needs to stop fucking letting that fuck Roman write his shit.Wes is decent when writing by himself, but shines when Owen Wilson is involved because he brings a lot of heart into it, which is entirely lacking when Roman Coppola is involved.Wes' entire career is borderline ruined by that talentless leech fuck and his shitty contributions because he couldn't cut it himself.
phoenician scheme is his best movie
>>222326143darjeeling was great though, some of his best writing work
>>222326143I completely forgot that Owen Wilson co-wrote Rushmore. You can feel his contributions.
>>222324669Imagine that Wes Anderson, the human, the director, and "Wes Anderson", the concept, the style, were separate beings. "Wes Anderson" has successfully consumed and replaced Wes Anderson.
This guys shit movies (Eggers too) have really left me hating the fuck out of Willem Dafoe
>>222324773>>222326209he didn't used to make every movie in the same style. his best movies are the ones that deviate significantly from this baseline shitty movie level he's presently at. i remember hating specifically the directing in darjeeling limited because it was so fucking differently awful, but not lazy.
Bottle Rocket is pretty damn good. I like that its like juvenile retard tarantino. Otherwise I think his movies are good up to life aquatic and I haven't seen darjeeling yet but I imagine ill like that
>>222326496if you liked tenenbaums its sort of spiritually similar to that franny/zooey style characterization.
>>222326496it’s a lot more grounded like bottle rocket, maybe even more so. i don’t know why he didn’t continue on this trajectory.
His fall was when Grand Budapest didn't win an Oscar that year, after that he stopped giving a crap
>>222325102You only think that because you're still young and kind of a little shit.
Let's change the subject I'm leaving
