Rewatched Donnie Darko 20 years later, in a cinema. It's a fun movie but I feel like the problem is it's just your regular 90s SciFi with the social themes dressing. It's like the director wash imitating Lynch. The director's cut also had all those book pages explaining what is happening, I don't remember those... and they changed Frank's voice to a loud-in-your-head one. Weird. The cinema scene with operatic singing is pretty much all there is to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WbzSSuJ6KA
I remember it being huge on the internet back in the day. Never watched it though. Would you recommend it?
>>222325167I'm honestly happy I watched it in a cinema, but I don't think it feels that relevant anymore. The main themes for MC are coming of age and being a schizo, so I say only watch if you find that interesting.
Every living creature on this earth dies alone.
>>222324871>>222325167I don't think it holds up. It's not dated, but it won't really do anything for you if you weren't a kid in the 80s - 90s. I remember thinking this movie was so deep when I saw it as a teen in the 2000s, but it's really just a convoluted mess.
>>222324871The Directors Cut is terrible (with the time travel plot, the less explained the better). It still holds up as a coming of age movie with a twist. Maybe younger generations are too brainwashed by shit like justifying DEI through critical race theory to enjoy Donnie shitting on things like the "Love ------ Hate" lesson plan but for the few that aren't it will be cathartic.
>>222325777>Love------Fear*Lol
>>222325777I still don't quite get the issue with diversity, equity, and inclusion. All the arguments against it sound retarded.
>>222326306That's because you are retarded
>>222326377Is that what they call free thinkers these days? Kinda lazy.
>>222326534You are fooling nobody, retard
>>222326306"We need to go out of our way to overrepresent a minority in our creation in a non-organic way."In left4dead no one complained about coach and whatever the black chick was, because they were in Louisiana and it was done in a normal way. There is a large complaint by the same people about white people taking roles from browns, while thise people gave no issue with a brown playing a white char.See black kid spiderman and the recent games just dumping on white spiderman while having black spiderman and MJ accomishing zaney feats. In the quest goal when MJ saves spiderman it's "save spiderman". When white spiderman was saving MJ it was "help MJ save herself".It's mostly pointless things. But I know people who do that stuff intentionally because, and I quote "I hate cis white people". I went to highschool with the girl that said that, and back in the day before all this, she would giggle with us and whenever the situation called for ut would yell out very loudly "BLACK PEOPLE".
>>222326578See? Lazy.
>>222326854you are brown
>>222326306This >>222326377.
>>222325646>I thought it was so deep when I saw it as a teen in the 2000s, but it's really just a convoluted mess.Meh I think most deep movies tow that line. You have to be cagey with your themes and too much subtlety just equals confusion
>>222324871This movie is one of the gayest most pretentious movies I've ever seen but I think it's one of my most watched movies because I pretended to like it to get laid in high school in the 2000s.
>>222325167its existential crisis / depressed teenager themed
>>222325777You are 100% brown and/or American.
>>222326306If you're too dumb to understand the association between DEI and the overly simplistic worldview Swayze's character is shilling to impressionable kids just reflect on the fact your advocating for racial quotas. You don't even have to get into how it actually doesn't help the economically disadvantaged and hasn't done anything to move the needle while actually diminishing the quality of education and the respectability of institutional certifications--the entire logic of DEI argues in favor of discrimination based on race. Simple as.
This is a movie that only hits hard when you're teenager, because you're in that perfect moody and fatalistic mindset brought by hormones. The movie feels extremely relatable at that age. It's the same with Virgins Suicide, for women.Once you grow older a bit the movie doesn't hit as hard.
>>222327490Somehow even more lazy.
>>222327592I'm advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion. If a school accepts government money, they can't do that while running a discriminatory institution. These places exist to teach people not to segregate and stratify learners. If you disagree, you are just wrong. If that sounds racist to you, congratulations, you've been swindled by hucksters. You want to train the Hitler youth? Do it without my tax dollars. Reflect on that. If 50-100 non-white males at a college bothers you. Ask yourself why. Shit, the majority of them will be white girls anyway. This is like an anti-pussy movement for colleges.
the movie is nonsense but i still like it. the soundtrack does a lot of heavy lifting
>>222324871Yes. What did you think it was before?
>>222325167fuck yea you should watch it. Ignore all zoomers itt that are contaminated by the director's cut and the sequel. Let me make this clear: DO NOT WATCH THE DIRECTORS CUT. Watch the theatrical cut. It's easily among the most inspired movies out there, as long as you keep the mystery of its premise.
>>2223248712000s were GOAT because it let you combine to greatness of cinema of earlier ages with silliness and down to earthness the cinema of later ages
>>222327906NTA and a libcuck but DEI is just ammo for bad guys and reverse racism. You cannot have a meritocracy with reverse racism. It is still racism
>>222325167it's a great movie but you have to be a teenager when you watch it. or at least if you watch it now you don't have the right to bitch about it.
>>222326306You have bad sources of information.Leftists changed "equality" to "equity" because giving people equal opportunities wasn't getting them the results they wanted. So now it's "equity", which is guaranteeing equal results through affirmative action hiring policies regardless of qualifications. Leads to things like Ketanji Brown Jackson, who is a retard that even liberals can't defend, and schools like Yale and Harvard getting caught discriminating against asians because they're too overrepresented.tl;dr: Hiring people because of demographics over qualifications is bad.
>>222327906>I'm advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusionA racial quota system based on active discrimination. Simple as.
As a teenager it is the perfect movie, I don’t know how many kids would get it today though, the closest thing they have to Donnie Darko is the Charls World Peace prison sketch with John Maus
