The sopranos biggest theme is depression. The reason Tony is depressed isn’t because his mother was harsh, it’s because he murders people but lives an upper middle class lifestyle. The sword of damocles is always above his head because even if he beats the firearm charge, even if he kills his adversary, even if he is the boss, any day he could be the one shot or get arrested on some other charge. So he lives in the moment for his victories, but anytime he standing still he is overcome by the inevitable end to his opulent successful life. And his kids will know dad is in jail or shot because he was a criminal who stole and murdered people, and that’s why they can’t be rich kids anymore.

That's partially correct, but it's not just that. Tony could have insulated himself at several points from most of the negative outcomes of the mob, but due to his upbringing, he can't stop. I think Melfi says it's like a shark swimming forward. If he ever stops, he'll suffocate under the weight of his past and spiral into a major depressive state.

Most of the bad aspects of my life and myself I can trace back to my BPD/narcissist mom. I realize thats not a nice thing to say about somebody but its basically taken me 30 years of deprogramming to figure this out. The straw that broke the camels back for me was when I was finally starting to become more successful and she didnt view this as a good thing but as a threat to her losing control. I think it might be easier for boys to handle a shitty dad because its more of a direct threat but a shitty mom will permanently fuck you up because of the manipulation and gaslighting.

A shitty mom absolutely fucks you up. That's one of several reasons why Johnny Boy was the real problem; he knew Livia was a headcase and abandoned his children with her so that he could have a second family with his goomar.
The other big reason, of course, was his involvement with the Mafia and the depravity involved, which he passed down to Tony.
Tony could never admit this, because he idolized his father despite his absence. Because his father was absent, he turned to other paternal figures: Junior, Paulie, Hesh, Dickie, and Molinaro. His subconscious fused them all together, which is why Tony gave all of them a "pass" at different points in his life (Molinaro being the only good influence, which is why he's hyperfixated on his approval in Test Dream; that's his ideal inner father figure).
That's also why in Season 6, when he's brought to his breaking point, he starts giving all of them shit. Christopher was the primary target for his ire due to his recent fatherhood.
