I've never seen the prequels, I saw the original three years ago and only two of the new sequels. That being said, why is Attack of the Clones so hated?
>>
>>222328627
The love story drags the movie down. It is also full of really silly moments. Stuff that just doesn't make sense. All the clones are of Jango Fett? For some reason? No one knows who ordered them? The stuff people wanted explored isn't. Anakin has a step brother, who he barely interacts with. Yoda's whole lightsaber fight is controversial too. Many feel he would never turn to violence and wouldn't need to jump around like a cartoon.

That said, I like arena monsters, the jedi and clones and the majority of the finale. Jango vs obi-wan is also great.
>>
>>222328627
it should've had less talking and nothingburger scenes the jedis talking about bullshit and showed more of the action. Always got pissed off at that scene where Anakin is slaughtering the tusken village and then it cuts to yoda sitting on his ass.

The writing between Anakin and Padme was bizarrely pseudo-Shakespearian nonsense, and the final battle with the clones was CGI slop that doesn't hold up to modern standards.

It's a mix of good and bad. I enjoy the love story as an unintentional comedy about an incel finding a jewish girlfriend while also embracing his inner chud and slaughtering the sand people. A coming-of-age story as only George Lucas can tell it. I quite like Obi-Wan's detective tale, too.

But everything on Geonosis is bad, mainly because of its visual design and its special effects. The CG in this film looks worse than in The Phantom Menace. That's not how sequels are supposed to be, especially not sequels from Lucasfilm, who were known at the time as cutting-edge pioneers of movie magic.

I liked it as a kid because it had the best tie in lego sets, next to Phantom Menace. Those were some kino lego sets.
>>
>>222331131
I don't agree. The Battle of Naboo pitches a fully CG army against another fully CG army, and it's visually cohesive if nothing else. The Battle of Geonosis goes Roger Rabbit-mode and mixes real actors among CG actors, with a sharply jarring contrast between the two. The tech just wasn't there yet.
>>
>>222328627
Normies complain about the romance scenes but they're actually fairly realistic. Anakin was groomed by Padme since he was a child (you see her giving him "fuck me" eyes in Phantom Menace) and even when she larps she's breaking up with him she's wearing a dress so sexy it's almost lingerie. Why? 'Cuz she's a manipulator. And yeah, Anakin says some goofy shit but this is the only woman he's been with besides his mom so cut him some slack.

I don't even think his monologue about hating sand is bad like normies say it is, he's just expressing how much he hates his home planet.
>>
>>222328627
All 3 are unwatchable garbage. The worst writing, directing, acting of any major movie. Go ahead and watch them. If you think they're great, then you're a fucking retard.
>>
>>222331202
They don't talk like real humans. Every dialogue is stilted or an exposition. The original cast had no qualms refusing to say the shitty dialogue until Lucas changed them. The Prequel casts were too starstruck and awed to say anything.
>>
>>222331502
This. The memes the prequels spawned are better than the movies themselves. Ya have a handful of cool scenes spread out over hours of complete filler and nothing.

Watched it again about a month ago, it still holds up.

They weren't great, but they didn't warrant all the seething. The main problem for the prequels was their being held to the high standard of the original Star Wars. If they hadn't carried that Star Wars name, I'm sure they would have been treated more kindly.

The prequels more correctly belonged to the same category of sci-schlock as Independence Day and The Fifth Element. If those films were okay, then the prequels should have been okay too. But because it was muh Star Wars, anything less than a transcendent and spiritually orgasmic experience constituted a Nuremberg-level crime. And the tears are STILL flowing, a quarter-century later. It's ridiculous.

Overall, it's the best prequel. The highs aren't as high as the ones in the Phantom Menace, but it's more consistent and mature and it isn't a complete shitshow like Revenge of the Sith.

It also has arguably the best action scenes out of all Star Wars movies. A lot of the middle part on Naboo drags admittedly, but the sub plot with Obi-Wan and Jango Fett is pretty cool, and once they get to Geonosis, everything from there on out is great. It's the most underrated Star Wars movie.

Yeah, it's fine. A little bit of slapstick in the middle of everything going to hell has always been a trademark of Star Wars and I've never had a problem with it. The real problem with C-3 in that movie was having him live with Owen and Beru. It makes no sense that Owen would be be asking him questions about what he does and have to re-buy him when he already technically owns him while acting like he has never seen him before in his life in episode IV when he lived with him for roughly ten years. That was far more damning than having him have a slapstick bit, which he did in every movie in the original trilogy. I'd even go as far as to say it's the best C-3P0 slapstick in the saga. It's fine if you don't like it, but then at least say that you didn't like it in the original trilogy.
>>
>>222333149
It's the worst Star Wars movie that George Lucas was involved with. There's so much wrong with it that I don't know where to start. But for one thing, Anakins reason for turning to the dark side and the entire way it was depicted - which was the entire selling point of the prequels from the start - is completely idiotic. There are a lot of other problems too, like how Attack of the Clones looks like it's setting up a war movie and then Anakins part of the story is just him mostly kicking around Coruscant instead of fighting the war like he should have been, and how it's somehow the goofiest, campiest Star Wars movie while simultaneously being dark in a way that is forceful and unnatural. It's a complete shitshow and a huge letdown. I was almost eleven when it came out and it honestly paled in comparison to what I thought it was going to be like. It's not hard to come up with a better story than that complete mess. I don't think that George Lucas really cared anymore by that point.
>>
>>222333324
>at least say that you didn't like it in the original trilogy.

You're being disingenuous. You know it's much longer than any Threepio slapstick scene in the OT. It also exists in a vacuum and has no bearing on the other characters, making it an irrelevant diversion, which can't be said of Threepio's misadventures in the OT.
>>
>>222328627
I thought it was pretty good.
>>
>>222333516
The only time it felt kind of connected to the other characters was in Empire. Usually he's just going through something off on his own simultaneously with the other characters. It's really no different than his slapstick bits in Return of the Jedi other than it going on longer, but even then it's in brief intermittent shots, so it's really not any more of a problem than it was in the original trilogy, and it's harmless anyway. Having something kind of goofy going on while something serious is going on is just what Star Wars does.
>>
>>222333476
>Anakins part of the story is just him mostly kicking around Coruscant

That's a good thing: all the important, galaxy-changing events are taking place on Coruscant. The culmination of the Palpy-Anakin relationship is the most dramatic part of the trilogy. I'd hate to have the opera scene replaced by yet another vapid clone shootout. Besides, the film has a big pew-pew spectacle at the beginning, and later some more pew-pew on Kashyyyk and at Grevious's homebase. It does enough to cater to that part of the audience who enjoyed the Geonosis action in AotC.
>>
>>222333724
>Having something kind of goofy going on while something serious is going on is just what Star Wars does.

It didn't happen during the Death Star trench run or during Luke's first duel with Vader.
>>
>>222333825
I didn't say that it happens in every single scene, but there is generally always one scene in each movie that does this.
>>
>>222333781
No, he should have been leading the war and making insane, shady decisions to achieve the greater good and eventually found himself in over his head, all while gradually losing more and more of his body to symbolize his loss of humanity while he tries to toggle the light and dark side until he finally gives into the dark side. Luke and Leia should have been born in the middle of the film and Padme should have kept it a secret from Anakin while he was out fighting the war because she was afraid of him, which caused him to snap when he found out about it. It should have been a war movie, not a boring biopic about a stupid man who kills children who know him by name to save his girlfriend. The explanation we got for why he turned to the dark side is like the worst one you possibly could have come up with.
>>
>>222333912
>No, he should have been leading the war and making insane, shady decisions to achieve the greater good and eventually found himself in over his head, all while gradually losing more and more of his body to symbolize his loss of humanity while he tries to toggle the light and dark side until he finally gives into the dark side.

Okay, suppose we rewrite the story this way. How are you then going to explain his resentfully subordinate relationship to the Emperor in RotJ?
>>
>>222328627
really started the whole overuse of CGI the prequels were known for, Anakin comes off as a massive sperg for most of the movie, Anakin and Padmes relationship felt really off and took up way to much of the movie, the entire sequence for how they find the clone army was extremely silly, yoda have an actual lightsaber fight instead of primarily using the force to beat Doku missed the entire point of his character
>>
>>222333476
You lost and got raped, Mike :-^)
>>
>>222334051
You can include that in the early part of the film and have him get called off back to battle going into the second third of the film, shortly before Luke and Leia are born. Obviously it would need to be refined, sanded down, and laminated, but that raw idea that I typed out is brimming with far more potential for a great, epic third installment of the trilogy than what we got.
>>
>>222334199
>but that raw idea that I typed out

Isn't "your idea" mostly derived from the Clone Wars cartoon series?

>he should have been leading the war and making insane, shady decisions to achieve the greater good and eventually found himself in over his head

That's what happens in the cartoon, right?
>>
>>222334339
Just because the Clone Wars cartoon showed him fighting the war didn't mean that episode III needed to steer away from that completely. When I watched that series as a kid, I assumed that it was a teaser for what we were going to get more of with episode III. I never thought that that was it and that episode III would just pivot to being this boring biopic about a seemingly lobotomized Anakin killing kids to save his girlfriend. I thought that it would take that premise and build upon it. And it's not like it would have been a complete rehash either, because it would show the birth of Luke and Leia and, Padme becoming increasingly intimidated by Anakin, leading her to keep their birth a secret from him while he's fighting the war, Anakin symbolically losing more parts of his body and fucking himself up gradually throughout the movie instead of winding up in the suit due to one single battle, and him underestimating the dark side by believing that he can utilize it in conjunction with the light side. The point is, it should have been a war movie where we see the main protagonist getting fucked up while actually fighting the war, not a biopic where we see him mostly walking back and forth between two buildings while wallowing in his misery and confusion.
>"your idea"
I'm just saying what I think would have made a better movie. If I gave a fuck about getting credit for this then I wouldn't be posting it here. I'm just telling you what I thought that the movie would be like before it came out and what I wish it was actually like.

>>222330489
Yoda should've just been a Force master as shown in TESB. It makes no fucking sense that wielding a baby lightsaber is his recourse when using the Force doesn't work. If anything it should be the other way around.
>>
>>222334051
Another thing about this, twenty five years have passed between Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi, so that doesn't all need to be explained in one movie. It's okay for a lot of it to be implied and left up to the audience to fill in the blanks. Revenge of the Sith seems to fail to understand this fundamentally, and the last fifteen minutes of the film perfectly setting up a New Hope is a great analogy for this fundamental flaw. Everything doesn't need to be gratuitously laid out for the audience to see at the expense of the actual story. This is why Revenge of the Sith feels so stationary and stuck in one place. It keeps you on Coruscant to explain everything rather than showing it in the form of an epic and emotional war film, which would have been so much more powerful.
>>
>>222334760
nta but i like what you're saying. if it were were like platoon but in space, it would've been pretty badass
>>
>>222334819
It might have been better as a war film IF that war was between mostly human factions, as it was in the original Star Wars. Then it would have been possible to include compelling human commanders like Tarkin and Needa. We also might have felt something for the casualties of that war. But George made the prequel war a war between CG droids and CG clones who were basically droids themselves, and the deaths on both sides of the battlefield seemed completely meaningless because they were soulless machines churned off of factory lines.

The commanders were scarcely more relatable than the troops. General Grevious was a walking toy commercial, and couldn't have participated in any serious scene. The Neimoidians were ching-chong caricatures, and the Separatist leaders we saw in AoTC were just as silly. Remember the war room scene aboard the Death Star in ANH, the one where Motti told Vader to go and get his fucking podracer? That kind of dialogue could not have taken place in the prequels, because there were no suitable characters for it. "What about the droid attack on the Wookies?" said the funny conehead, and that was the level of strategic discourse in the prequels. The war was silly.

So all the really serious stuff had to take place within the inner sanctum of Coruscant, because there we had the Shakespearean ack-tor Ian McDiarmid and he was able to bring some gravitas to the proceedings.
>>
>>222335350
There is no way that having the movie stationed in one large city so that you can flood the audience with information and backstory would have been in any way more powerful or heartbreaking than showing our main protagonist get fucked up by the war, even if the soldiers were grown in a lab. It doesn't need to be all about the soldiers. Anakin fighting the war would have provided a wealth of opportunities to actually show his fall to the dark side, not just explain it through dialogue. For one thing, Anakin could have valued the clones as human beings and been frustrated by the jedis refusal to do so, whether he was right or wrong. It could have shown that beneath his anger and his insane, chaotic decision making, there was a very gentle person beneath all of that. It also didn't need to just involve the clones, the Gungan army could have gotten involved again instead of the Wookiees, which would have both helped bookend the trilogy and also given George an opportunity to make audiences reassess their initial hatred of Jar Jar and the Gungans by giving Jar Jar an emotional and heroic death. It could have reframed Jar Jar in a way that would have been both surprising and powerful. All that aside, there's so much more that could have made this movie powerful than just dialogue between Anakin and Palpatine had it focused more on the war. Anakin could have been fighting this war while the thought of his children gave him hope in spite of everything, Padme has the kids in secret, lies to him and tells him that she had a miscarriage, and by then, he's in so deep that he snaps. We can't have our hero choking a pregnant woman, but we might be able to live with him choking a woman who isn't pregnant when the one thing that he had to look forward to in life taken from him. There is no way that having it focus on Coruscant was the best way to do it.

>Yoda's whole lightsaber fight is controversial too. Many feel he would never turn to violence and wouldn't need to jump around like a cartoon.
What? Yoda is explicitly shown to be a dangerous manipulative little bastard from the get go, it's not that people thought he wouldn't use violence at all it's that they thought he would rely less on lightsaber fights due to his size and would use the force intelligently to combat his enemies. So more force wizardry instead of blade to blade. Instead he moves some rocks, which if were going by the sequel movies is apparently the most powerful bit of wizardry jedi can learn to do. People just didn't know that yet.

Palpatine covertly financed a creation of a clone army then orchestrated a situation where the Republic is forced to make use of it, despite it being shady.
The next step is ensuring that the army is actually really effective so everyone gets comfortable with the fact that shadily created clones are now everywhere and then he issues the kill instruction.

The main gambit is making the Republic be forced into a situation where they have to accept this "gift", but he likely had many backup scenarios how to bring that about.
The Kenobi>Jango>Utapau route likely forced his hand a bit.

Come on now. Audiences would have laughed at a scene like that, and so would you.

Hey, maybe it should have been like Saving Private Ryan, with Roos Tarpals leading a squad of gungans into war-torn Theed to save Jar-Jar and help him defend a checkpoint against a Trade Fed tank company. Roos and all his men would die in the endeavour, but Jar-Jar would survive. With his dying breath, Roos would say, "Make it count, Jar-Jar, make it count." Then we'd flash-forward 50 years and see old Jar-Jar in his wheelchair at the military cemetery, weeping as he laid a single Millaflower on the grave of Roos, and John Williams could play some sombre bugle music in the background.
