Well in the books no one really knew that sauron could survive in the one ring. Everyone just saw him get pretty well beat the fuck down and then disintegrated so he seemed pretty fucking dead. It was kinda implied Isilidur should destroy it cause it's just got bad vibes but no on really lost any sleep over him keeping it.
