It seems stupid to make starvation the only way to defeat them, especially considering they're never shown to gather around water sources or eat the people they kill. With the speed they constantly move at and assuming they don't sleep either it would take much less time than 28 days.

NATO ships are constantly patrolling around the UK and would certainly be aware of the surviving settlements. It doesn't make sense that they would not be air-dropping supplies to them.Not only would it help cull the infected without risking any NATO troops, but it would make the survivors far less likely to attempt escape from the island.
