Objectively, what is the best western movie?
Wild Wild West
>>222336009i've always found it impossible to get into westerns. what's my path into this genre? where do i begin?
>>222336009Damn that looks like fun. It’s A Fistful of Dollars even though Yojimbo is far superior. Deadwood for TV.
Objectively? Deadwood>>222336117based>>222336041also based
>>222336009Rio Bravo
>>222336009Tombstone. Skin that smoke wagon, bitch.
>>222336050The Rifleman.
>>222336009The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
>>222336138>>222336041This
Objectively Once Upon a Time in The West. Not really even up for debate, at all. Of course there are tons of great Westerns, but this is the end all be all de facto Western Movie. Other personal (subjective) favorites are also a lot of the best ones made.UnforgivenThe SearchersAssassination of Jesse JamesHell or High WaterOpen RangeThe Dollars Trilogy (duh)Even Django Unchained is a good one (Hateful Eight fucking sucks though)3:10 to Yuma remake is pretty good
everything after the Searchers is just attempts to try to do part of the Searchers betteranything else is like saying the best fantasy isn't Tolkien. you can try to be contrarian to be interesting but it's just obvious there's one thing that got all the pieces in order first and everything else is responding to it
Tombstone is pretty accessible
>>222336009I-I-I'm thinkin' we lost this one, Bart.
For me -aside from what was already posted- it's>True Grit>The Great Silence>Mr McCabe and Mrs Miller>Treasure of the Sierra Madre
>>222336303>>222336181Grew up idolizing Tombstone. Rewatched it for the first time in probably 20 years and that movie doesn't really hold up. Especially after getting your teeth wet on some proper Westerns like mentioned in >>222336292
>>222336009If someone says anything other than Shane, they haven't matured enough to answer your question.>>222336292>Objectively Once Upon a Time in The West. Not really even up for debate, at all. Of course there are tons of great Westerns, but this is the end all be all de facto Western Movie. You are a child who is overly affected by music. OUATITW is amazing to you because you haven't seen enough westerns to understand how tropey, generic, and unoriginal it is. You do not understand the western genre as anything but a superficial stereotype.
>>222336240Which completely ripped off I Shot Jesse James (1949)
>>222336565>OUATITW is amazing to you because you haven't seen enough westerns to understand how tropey, generic, and unoriginal it isYou are a retard who doesn't understand that it comes off as tropey and unoriginal because every movie made after it copied it.Would you also say Blade Runner is tropey and unoriginal because the cyberpunk aesthetic is popular and has been done ad nauseam?
>>222336705>it comes off as tropey and unoriginal because every movie made after it copied it.It came out in fucking 1968. Is that when you think the western genre was invented? It did nothing that hadn't already been done decades before. The whole point of it being made was to be an homage to other westerns. You're the kind of person who thinks Quentin Tarantino is the most original director in Hollywood.
>>222336240i only watched it to see Casey Affleck and while his acting is incredible as always, brad pitt was fucking horrendous. and his face was all bloated and shit and he was on the verge of looking like an Orangutan, just like 'interview with the vampire'.his accent was bad, acting was bad. he did not have the presence and aura to play that role. and the movie was so fucking boring. the scenery was amazng i'll give them that.
>>222336391>McCabe and Mrs MillerRewatched this the other day and it's just typical 70s nihilism with nothing interesting to say
>Once upon a time in the west invented the western genre in the year 1968!!! Nothing had been done before then, because I don't watch pre-Leone westerns! I'm an expert on the genre!
>>222336869Why don’t you (you) him you passive aggressive gay male
>>222336989(You) are (him) and you aren't worth a reply if you think Once Upon a Time in the West was the first movie to do those generic genre tropes or anything new whatsoever. Ugly fuck.
>>222336565>>222336741
>>222336009Neat.
>ctrl+F "The Quick And The Dead">no hitsyou people don't know ball
>>222337074The retarded Sam Raimi movie or the original with Sam Elliott that actually had characterization?
>>222336009Sabata.
>Sergio Leone had never seen a western film before he started making westerns, I'm sure! That's how he invented the genre all by himself and nothing existed beforehand! Westerns peaked in the fucking 70s! I have never seen a western made before 1960, so I would know! It's just a weird coincidence that the most popular genre in the world died before it even started! Because it started in Italy, of course! I'm knowledgeable, I have a letterboxd account!
>>222336009I dont give a fuck that Lonesome Dove is a miniseries it so good you'll watch it all in one go. Best western ever producedt. western autist
>>222337228>say the word ""whore" 100 times per house>Best western ever!It takes a little more substance, for me.
>>222337205You won already and proved he was a retarded faggot. Move on
>>222336009It's objectively red dead
>>222337272>said only 32x across all 4 episodescolloquial language little bro. makes sense when the plot revolves around 2 of them as wellwhy cry?
>>222336009I don’t care what anyone says, deadwood is the best western as well as the best series I’ve ever seen
>>222337279>Move onNot until I see him repent
The Outlaw Josey Wales
>>222337325As a self-described western autist, what are your top 10 then?
>>222337292b8 used to be believable
>>222336565
>>222337570Go on, say it. Say what you're holding back on. Learn something tonight.
>>222336050start with modern Westerns, like Hell or High Water
>>222336009>that guy that fucks up the shotgun flip/reload near the endhahah faggot
>>222336009
>>222336565what does this make me, a regular Joe whose two favorite westerns are Shane and Once Upon a Time in The West?
>>222336292>Once Upon a Time in The WestI don't really care for it.
Are there any Japanese Westerns?
>>222337539Lonesome DoveDeadwoodThe SearchesRio BravoWild BunchThe good bad uglyShane3:10 to yuma 2007UnforgivenThe Revenant, hot takeon this one but I appreciate its just complete tone of how fucking brutal the untamed American West really was. My main appeal of westerns is I can just get lost in the scenery, even shitty cheap 50s mass western slop I can find enjoyment.Bonus is Treasure of the SIerra Madre
>>222336050Tombstone. If don't like Tombstone, then you won't like any western.
>>222337623Terrible advice. Neo-western that's nothing like the actual genre. Classical westerns are very broad. Find a theme you like, a director you like, actors you know and like from other genres, and start there. If you've seen any classic Hollywood films, you have a plethora of actors to choose from and pursue their western careers. Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck, John Wayne, Sterling Hayden, Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper, Burt Lancaster, Henry Fonda, Kirk Douglas, Glenn Ford, Robert Mitchum, Charlton Heston, Richard Widmark, Charles Bronson, Anthony Quinn, Clark Gable, Alan Ladd, etc. Pick someone you like and watch them in a western.
>>222337668>3:10 to yuma>2007Well, Anon. I gave you a chance.
>>222337728yep I knew you'd say this. I can play bingo with the typical channies tastes. Old was inferior. rare, but it happened.
>>222337744Fuck Russell Crowe. Now what? Where do we go from here?
>>222337664By definition, no
>>222337765yea okay fuck that fat ass, still a better ending with the father/son dynamic. His mission had more purpose and the conviction felt like it weigh'd a hell of a lot more.
>>222337668>The Revenant, hot takeon this one but I appreciate its just complete tone of how fucking brutal the untamed American West really wasHow do you compare that with Jeremiah Johnson?
>>222337594Dance! Dance! Yahooo ya mudafucka
>>222336041Steampunk not western
>>222337713Bullshit that movie sucks dick. Even Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner is better
>>222337927Autism kino
>>222337852Something about Robert Redford throws me off I think I've seen too much of him being charming but I will admit my bias. I just felt like The Revenant was more about it's hellish unforgiving nightmare scape and the people within it abiding.
>>222336009die hard xD
>>222337979>Something about Robert Redford throws me off I think I've seen too much of him being charmingCompared to Leo DiCaprio? You buy Leo roughing it out in the old west?
>>222336041I watched this recently thinking it was a kids movie I liked when I was younger, it’s objectively an underrated action adventure buddy comedy, even though the comedic parts would be better if it was Eddie Murphy instead of Will Smith, although Will is a much better action star than Eddie
>>222338003ehh I channel Leo out as much to be fair. I just love the scenery and OST is too good. Love that desolate feel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqOM6ssDF4Mnot a western but I got the same vibe from The Terror.
>>222336041def underratedalso unforgiven
>>222337999Westerns not Halloween flicks
>>222337668Revenant isn't a western
My Name is Nobody is my favourite. I've been trying to get /tv/ to watch it for months without any succes.
>>222336565>overly affected by music.no such thing, music is literally magic
>>222337668Kek
>>222336009Can't speak on objective since I know almost nothing about the genre, but my roommate who does know a lot about westerns would probably say Fistful of Dollars or something from that trilogy, going by how he talks about them.I've only watched The Rifleman (TV) and Red Sun (Movie) so I'd say those, personally.
>>222337668pleb
>>222336009The SearchersIt's the Western in its most fairy-tale incarnation.....it's pure awe and adventure, and I adore every minute of itI also enjoy the really gritty and mean ones, don't get me wrong, but nothing gets me like John Ford's colorful, big-scope fantasy vibes
>>222336391I've always viewed Treasure of the Sierra Madre as more of an adventure film in the vein of those pulp novels and comic books of the time, but there are undoubtedly western elementsStill, one of the greatest films EVER
>>222336009High Plains Drifter
>>222336041wicki wicki waw wicki waw waw
>>222336444how about i punch your teeth down your throat
>>222336009Pale Rider
I'm partial to The Proposition but if I could only watch one it would be Lonesome Dove.
>>222336009>best western movieDamn, they'll really make movies about anything these days.
>>222342490KEK good one
>>222336009What's up with asians larping as cowboys or romans or knights
>>222336009The Hallelujah Trail
Has anyine here seen "Lonely are the brave"?
>>222342278>>222342348These guys fuck.
>>222342665What's up with whites larping as ninjas and karetakas?
>>222336009>no one posting literally the best Western film
>>222336009I would say that Silverado is the best WESTERN made to date. The good guys are good. The bad guys are greedy opportunists. There are excellent twists and turns and some spectacular visual and sound design. This is assuming Spaghetti Westerns have their own category; as thematically they are much darker and more deliberate in tone than westerns. To compare the two would be like asking if a delicious ribeye steak is better than a succulent pork pirí pirí. They are simply two different things that satisfy the same urge in a wildly different way.If you were to include them I’d say it splits the lead with tGtBatU. Two sides of the same coin.
>>222336565>You are a child who is overly affected by musicAlmost as if audio is half of the audiovisual experience. Music does a lot of heavy lifting for these kinds of films.
>>222336009>chinamen with gunsThis town don't deserve to exist, I reckon.
>>222336050The Searchers. The Big Country
>>222336292>Django UnchainedShalom.
>>222336009The cowboys
>>222336292Django Unchained is fucking garbage, also it's not even a Western since it takes place in the Deep South
>>222336050The Searchers.
>>222336050Don't start with The Searchers. It's great but it's not an entry level western, anyone recommending that as your first western is a retard. Try The Outlaw Josey Wales
>>222336292>everyone attacking redditor postdamn /tv/ still got it
>>222336050The Searchers felt like the quintessential western to me. It sparked my interest in the genre.
>seach Outland>0 resultsAs expected of this place0 fucking clue0 fucking tasteI would feel pity for you lot but right now i'm filled with so much disgust and resentment over having to share this board with such uncultured swine that i must indulge in some european cinema to wash off this feeling from my person.
>>222346028why is he vomiting all over them in the final frame
>>222336009Rango unironicallyDon't listen to these washed up uncs
>>222336009is that General Lee?
>>222336009Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
I don't do bests, but some of my faves;>The Tall T (based Randolph Scott)>McCabe and Mrs Miller>If You Meet Sartana Pray For Your Death>The Gunfighter>Winchester 73>My Name Is Nobody>The Ballad of Cable Hogue (any Peckinpah really)
>>222346091COS SUMBODEH DON KNOE HOW TO FLUSH THA LOO
>>222346636Randolph Scott movies are so cozy, my favorite of his is The Desperadoes
The actual answer is My Darling Clementine.
>>222344606Watched it again today. Bolivia, really?
>>222345829It's a better option than Josey Wales that'll just make people think westerns are all Clint Eastwood one-liner action joints. Start with the classics.
>>222349442Ehh, I think if a younger viewer has not already acquainted themselves with pre-70s cinema (regardless of the genre) they might find the Yank studio westerns a little stuffy. I worked my way backwards from spaghetti to revisionist and further back, helped dissuade my notions that the older stuff was all just gung-ho Wayne-starring propaganda
>>222336009Thought you could just sneak these fat tits by me? And the best western is Once Upon A Time In The West.
>>222349987I believe that a youngster should just go ahead and acquaint themselves with such things, especially when they've already shown an interest in it.>I worked my way backwards from spaghetti to revisionist and further back, helped dissuade my notions that the older stuff was all just gung-ho Wayne-starring propagandaThose notions could've been dissuaded much sooner by just starting with the older stuff to begin with
>>222336050Try something simpler and lighter, like The Quick And The Dead or Boss Nigger
>>222336302>anything else is like saying the best fantasy isn't Tolkien
>>222349442Then at least start with more conventional classics than The Searchers, which most first time viewers won't like unless they're already a fan of the genre, or at least already a huge fan of classic cinema. It's like recommending Vertigo as someone's first Hitchcock film, terrible idea. Red River would certainly be a better option, or maybe something like Winchester '73 or Shane
