>grow up with media constantly referencing kung fu movies as nothing more than low-quality foreign films to be lampooned and parodied
>actually watch them now in 1080p HD with original Mandardin audio
>they're incredible pieces of theater with masterful choreography, editing, set and costume design, etc with a beautiful mythology and ethos that ties it all together
Was it just the VHS picture quality and awkward English dubbing that drove people away from this whole genre?

The concept of "soulful" was not yet invented in the western critical discourse through online banter.
So movies like these were just seen as goofy infantile stuff that might be good for a laff or two.

But now we know better.

No, you're either a chinese faggot or a weeb

Racism. Pure and simple.

yes

if you weren't around for the 90s and before it's impossible to explain how against subtitles everyone was in any situation

like zoomers all watch anime and turn closed captions on by default and everything on tiktok is captioned so it's second nature

but if honestly suggested people watched anything that wasn't natural spoken English before crouching tiger and passion of the Christ made it acceptable you would get
>I DON'T WANNA READ A FUCKIN MOVIE
>WHAT YOU THINK YOU'RE BETTER N ME?

like on slow days in school where you'd watch something where subtitles weren't even obtrusive like the jabba part in return of the Jedi you would have the dumbest kids in the class going
>TEACHER THIS IS SOOO BORING
>CAN WE PLEASE FAST FORWARD THROUGH THE SUBTITLE PART
>>
Yeah it's really great, the stunts are crazy. A while ago I watched Human Lanterns (1982) and Bloodsport back to back and Bloodsport is a good movie but the fights were frankly embarrassing in comparison.
>>222337153
Pretty much my experience. People around me didn't start watching subtitled content until the hipster era.

Reminds me of watching Cynthia Rothrock's Hong Kong films like Yes, Madame!, The Magic Crystal, and Above the Law, and then watching her American films like China O'Brien and Undefeatable, and the handling of the choreography and action in general is so much better in the Hong Kong stuff

*cantonese

A lot of old kung fu movies are really low quality and worthy of ridicule. And i'm saying that as someone who loves HK cinema. But once you've seen a few shaw bros flicks you'll notice how samey they all start to get.

Soulful just means nostalgia.

Most Hong Kong films before the 80s were dubbed natively in Mandarin. Cantonese is more modern and associated more strongly with other studios like Golden Harvest. Mandarin sounds much nicer to my ears, too.

There is no "original" dubbing, the films were shot without sound and then dubbed both in mandarin (for the mainland and Taiwan) and cantonese (for Hong Kong).

The quality and level of effort were not equal. Mandardin was the intended language from the beginning, and the actors and sound artists worked with that in mind. The mandarin tracks are superior to the cantonese, and the films generally sync better with them.

I haven't seen too many, admittedly. I've only watched a couple of the Bruce Lee starring and Bruce Lee related ones (like Tower of Death) and a few Jackie Chan ones.....which more obscure ones would you people reccommend? Any good Shaw Brothers ones?

Dragon Inn is so fucking kino until the last act and then they defeat the bad guy by spinning in a circle to flare up his asthma and it fucking SUCKS

You're mistaking your internet bubble for the real world. The reason you heard things like that back then wasn't because people were more retarded. It is because that is the last time you interacted with a real cross-section of society (through school).
