why are book nerds so jealous and insecure about cinema?
why are they always saying retarded shit like "THAT'S NOT THE POINT OF THE BOOK" like it's a 1 to 1 adaptation and the directors should have no liberties

because it's rarely ever good changes being made. next question.

The Obsession and Odyssey discourse may have been the tipping point for me where I'm beginning to not give a shit about culture war topics nearly as much, already this whole back and forth dancing to the tune of the puppet masters I recognised as ridiculous, but I now feel a sense of peace washing over me

if they don't want to hear complaints about their sub-par adaptiations movie fags can just wear their big boy pants and write an original story then. Just understanding the book that one's adapting on the most basic level is often enough to get a good movie out of it, but that's already asking too much for half of the directors
>>
>>222341024
The funny thing is that her translation got pilloried for using modern American English and being too woke and not really respecting the original text.
>>

Its a translation. What else should it use? Tudor English? Why would that be more appropriate?

Because they like the book and want to see it adapted faithfully, rather than the director using it to do his own thing with it.

I'm not saying they're necessarily right, but I get it. If my favourite books were made inro movies, and those ended up diverging too much from them, I'd be disappointed too, even if they were still really good movies.

NTA, I haven't read the translation beyond the first page, but something about the sentence "Tell me about a complicated man" just sounds incredibly retarded to me.

Using old-fashioned English is because that’s what people are used to. Just like how Matt Damon speaking American English threw people off. We expect our classical stuff to be spoken in British English.

>>
>>222341230
I think that once you get to a certain age, like, say your mid-50s, you should probably understand that a book, particularly a dense one, cannot be faithfully adapted to a completely different medium. She’s throwing a hissy fit over nothing.

Now, she’s worried that a bunch of people will like the book she’s devoted her life to and won’t give her credit for liking the book “before it became popular.”

There are a million different ways you can translate a work to English, it is not objectively 'false' but in my subjective opinion translating a work of ancient literature to sound like what you would hear a wine aunt say in a water cooler conversation is stupid.

Literally the only reason she is mad is because Nolan did exactly what she was doing, but he was about as subtle as a bulldozer without breaks.
It's like as if she was poisoning a target to use his demise to further her goals ,only for Nolan to barge through the door bash target's skull in with a sledgehammer in front of everybody.
Both set out to demystify Oddysey, but her way would be long lasting if subtle and someone else would continue her work.
>>
>>222341309
Is she the lady that translated the Odyssey and shit talked Nolan's version?

I mean, I get the point. Nolan took an ancient story, produced by a very different culture with very different sensibilities and contorted into a metaphor for the cost of modern American military adventurism. It is an appropriation of the original material for something that's clearly based on Nolan's personal thematic interests.

And I say that as someone who actually really liked the movie. But I get why a an actual scholar of Ancient Greece would roll their eyes at it.
>>
>>222341386
That's just the framework you're deploying to defend the translation, you haven't actually proven that it is a good translation simply because it isn't technically 'wrong'. A translator can take liberties as long as the overall aesthetic sense of the finished work is sound. Wilson's translation is overly simplified and sounds like a young adult novel. You can argue it is 'modernised' but at what point is this process of modernisation actually inappropriate and robbing the original of its character? It should at least sound epic and poetic, not like what you would overhear two young girls saying at a bus stop.
>>
>>222341360
>She clearly wrote a simplified version for retards
Contrary to these other translators, she wanted to use an epic meter to convey the rhythmic nature of the poem. She went for iambic pentameter, because Greek dactylic hexameter depends on patterns of long and short syllables that do not map naturally onto English stress, whereas iambic pentameter is the established metre of English epic blank verse.

The only positive characteristic of the translation is that it is more intelligible to people who don't read literature. Your attempt to justify the work with basic knowledge of poetry doesn't mean anything, it's still diluting and oversimplifying the language of the original poem, making it sound bland and lifeless.
>>
>>222341421

This. Even the original was meant to be sung. It wasn’t straightforward language in the original Mycenean Greek either. It’s meant to be lyrical and full of wordplay.

Little kids would get the story in plain language. Adults would get the full version.

Oates went chud. She watched the TV movie adaption and then admitted Nolan's version sucks.
>>
>Any translator of a text as long and complex as the Odyssey is going to err. But in addition to the usual typos, Wilson makes so many mistakes that, collectively, they begin to sap the reader’s confidence in her translation. Straightforward blunders include attributing a speech to the wrong speaker, producing a character formerly unknown to the Odyssey, and misidentifying another. Among Wilson’s other infelicities are numerous mistranslations, lines skipped by the translator, and mistakes of fact.
>It seems to me that in her handling of the Odyssey and its characters and values Wilson is trying to do too many things at once: to rework the Odyssey so that it embodies twenty-first-century mores and values; and to be a critic; and to produce a translation suitable for undergraduates and first time readers of the epic. But her version does not show enough creative independence to stand on its own as a rewriting of the Odyssey. And it is marred by too many idiosyncracies and failures of scholarship to succeed as an academic translation.

Because when you have the opportunity to make a blank-check tentpole cinematic event of one of the foundational stories of human history, it's not the time to "subvert expectations" or "tell your version of the story"

You're supposed to make a faithful baseline adaptation of the story with all of the resources at your disposal to serve as the gold standard against which all future adaptations will be judged. This is not the time to inject your vanities or personal sensibilities into the existing art.

She’s probably deluded herself into thinking her version is definitive.

Why post fake images?
The article is from The Guardian. Oats is criticizing Wilson for criticizing Nolan because the success of the movie has lead to more book sales for Wilson. Also she thinks it's in bad taste for a translator to criticize anyone else's interpretations of the odyssey so long as that interpretation is in good faith.
And yes, I know MAGA talk=Chud but the image was altered to garner more rage b8.

Exactly. What Wilson fails to understand is that the Greeks saw their heroes as flawed nonetheless.
Achilles was mighty but wrathful. Odysseus was clever but deceitful.
Going all the way back to Jason who died miserable and alone, crushed by a falling piece of his rotting ship.
Greeks wanted to teach people to see the good in people without being blind to their flaws.

I often say that 'continuity is god' here in this realm, and this is what I mean.

Autism to this anon is caring about changes. Changes to something you know well or are devoted to in some way.
Caring about things and allowing disruptions to occur, rather than being indifferent and 'on rails' is a pathology to the modern man.

You’re not wrong, but it’s important to have understanding and acceptance where it’s warranted, otherwise it devolves into shrieking gatekeeping.

If someone likes something in a way you don’t necessarily like, you can take that as an excuse to start a fight or you can use it as a way to start a dialogue and help someone else gain deeper appreciation (and maybe even deepen your own appreciation in the process.)
